The Brexit Thread

Jesus, this is going to cause heart failure amongst the old Brexit guard, India has always said that a FTA is hinged upon easier visa and immigration procedures for Indian citizens, the number of gammons who’ve told me how good Brexit will be now that the “Pakis” (old Brit gammon speak for any Indian) can’t just come to Britain anymore because “we’ve taken back control” isn’t funny.

For example

Britain needs to accept higher levels of immigration from India if it hopes to sign a free trade deal after Brexit, a senior Indian diplomat has warned.
YK Sinha, India’s High Commissioner to the UK, warned that after Brexit it may take up to a decade for the two countries to negotiate a free trade deal and the “freer movement of people and professionals” would be a crucial component of it.

Correct Dave, the other side of the same coin, like a South African expat working in the UK.

That’s my point, you aren’t really an “us” in SA, are you? I made the same point about SA expats working in the UK recently.

You’re just a long term visitor in reality, aren’t you?

Reminds me of this skit from Not the 9 o Clock News..

Now who could have predicted this...

 same guy in 2017
Mr Paisley went on: “Failure to reach an overall agreement means we will end up trading on world trade terms and whilst that poses significant challenges for some sectors such as agri food exports for Northern Ireland we would be in most cases isolated from the worst of that consequence as most of our export food market is the rest of the UK making all our exports there zero rated.
“Our manufactured goods abroad would be subjected to trade tariffs of between 2%-5%. However, in these circumstances the economy of the republic would be crippled. Given that the UK is one of its significant export markets it would be subjected to massive tariffs into its main market.”

And before you all screech, "WHO IS THIS". Journalists from Sky News, LBC, and the BBC have previously retweeted these guys. That's how I found them in the first place.

You’d have to be living under a rock to not know the alt-right propagandiser Paul Staines aka Guido Fawkes who runs order-order.

if you are living under a rock @Vorastra you need to try harder, order-order.com is just another Breitbart or ZeroHedge, they don’t quite know what truth is and are ardent alt-right Brexiters, (though Paul is a bit of a fair weather Brexiter, he decided it was a good idea to get Irish citizenship to go along with his U.K. citizenship a while ago).

Speaking from Bridlington on Monday, where he is in the process of dismantling hundreds of lobster crates, Baron said: “All we have had is bullshit from the government, promises that haven’t been kept. I am winding up the business while I still have enough to pay redundancy to my staff.

“People say Boris has tried his best, but it just hasn’t been enough,” he said. “It’s the extra costs and uncertainty. We have to fill in new health notes, and there is a lot of new paperwork, including the catch certificates. Every time you put lobsters on transport, if anything in the paperwork is wrong, you have lost everything.

“It is all Brexit-related – the extra costs, extra paperwork and the extra gamble – and it is down to the government and the EU. Every time you send out transport with lobster, it is like playing Russian roulette with five bullets in your gun.”

If only someone, anyone, had come out and warned them of what would happen if the UK left the single market...

And these regulations are not new and have always applied to imports of shellfish from outside the EU. The same for import laws which apply to other industries. We haven’t heard the last of this.

But hey, we gonna get a trade deal with India. This is a country fiercely protective of their local industry and with a significantly lower consumer income than the EU. Yeah we gonna trade with India, we gonna pay them to buy our goods.

And easier immigration and more flexible visas for Indian citizens tied into that trade deal will make every Brexiter like Herr Farage so happy, as immigration had nothing to do with Brexit, as they’re always so fond of reminding us.

I don't like fish, don't care!

In other news, my printer cartridges arrived from Germany promptly without additional fees

Prices will go up they said, delays in shipping they said. The deal must exempt printer cartridges from this.

I’ve noticed my Chinese orders are arriving much quicker this year, only downside is all the prices have gone up around 20% which is likely due to the vat crackdown that came in under an EU Directive (which the EU have postponed because of Covid but the UK still implemented in January) and fewer traders are doing free economy post and the postage costs have definitely also increased.

When a Frenchman sides with the UK, you know the EU are just being petty and childish again just like when the had their tantrums and wanted to blame the UK for the vaccine rollout failure. Every week that passes, all the things people said about the EU keep being reaffirmed, must be hard for the remainers to keep seeing the true colours of the EU being shown for who they are.

Adrian, it’s called third country status, there is nothing petty or childish (or unexpected) about it. Third country trading rules have been around for almost as long as the EU has, they were there and warnings were made about them for the last 6 years or so.

The UK will just have to get used to it.

Just like we couldn’t have fish paste from South Africa in the UK, the EU is a single market for its members, others not in that single market have to comply with all the rules to trade with them or find their products not allowed entry.

This shouldnt be a surprise to you, me or the Frenchman...

Except it would seem there was an understanding the the ban would only be in effect until 21 April. The EU was to introduce legislation that shellfish from class B waters if accompanied by a health certificate could be exported to EU without cleaning, to which the government is now saying the EU have changed their position on.

I find it odd that such a statement is made with a very specific date mentioned. The EU also informed the UK government two weeks after Brexit that the shellfish ban would be permanent. I find it very odd the EU would be sending "reminders" of various tradings with the EU when it's a well known rule for non-EU countries. To me it seems the only reason they informed the UK government is because they did change their position.

As for the rules and laws, nobody is arguing that, the argument is about the temp vs perm ban.

Except it would seem that once again you haven’t done proper research, don’t believe everything you read in the tabloids or from any form of govt supporting media outlet.

You should realise by now that anything said by the BoJo govt is likely to be skewed, inaccurate or an outright lie.

Here’s the actual story:

UK shellfish producers are reeling, following reports that EU rules restricting the import of live mussels, oysters and other shellfish are set to continue indefinitely.

European regulations forbid the import of live bivalve molluscs “not fit for consumption” from “third countries” – that is, countries outside the EU single market – unless they are either harvested from the cleanest “Class A” waters or have already been “depurated”, that is cleaned by being left to stand in saltwater tanks, prior to entering the EU.

UK producers previously sent their shellfish for depuration at large processing plants on the Continent, so facilities for depuration in the UK are extremely limited. The rules effectively ban many UK producers from exporting their product to their traditional markets in Europe.

UK producers say they had been given assurances by the UK government that the situation was being addressed and that the regulations would be lifted on 21 April. News website Politics Home reported yesterday, however, that an EU official had written to industry representatives in January to confirm that the regulations are to stay in place.

Which is why I don't often if ever post articles from The Guardian, The Independent, The Mirror which love to bend to the left and make stuff up to suit their pro-EU anti-Brexit narrative.

You should realise by now that anything said by the BoJo govt is likely to be skewed, inaccurate or an outright lie.

I have realized all the politicians including the EU are liars a long time ago. Fortunately as the weeks have passed, the EU have done a splendid job in showing the world the lying, petty, childish, bullies they are, yet denial is strong in the pro-EU camp regarding this.

Your link pretty much backs my previous post. It doesn't answer the question why the EU needed to send a communication two weeks after Brexit explaining the regulations regarding shell fish will be permanent, unless of course there is some truth where the UK government has said they were given assurances the regulations would be changed come April and the EU have back-tracked on these assurances.

Just because the EU hasn't commented on these statements doesn't mean the UK government is lying, but it seems that some people in UK would rather want the UK to be the ones lying at the expense of people's jobs so that they can say "I told you so".

It doesn’t back up your post, and you’ve managed to make quite a hash of interpreting it as well.

The current rules are in place, they were in place yesterday, and for many years prior. The UK government made up some s**t to placate the industry, there is NO evidence they received assurances from the EU, in fact it appears no such assurances were give and that an EU official wrote to the industry representatives that was the case and that they would be treated as a Third Country and would need to process their products before they could enter the EU.

The major problem seems to be that Brexiters don’t quite comprehend Third Country status, and always want to get upset and call the EU petty when existing EU rules relating to Third Countries are imposed on the UK, which is now a Third Country.

Brexit is over and done for, people in Britain (especially Brexiters) need to come down to reality and realise the EU owes the UK no favours, we are now a Third Country in terms of EU rules, this was said over and over and over since 2014 (and dismissed as Project Fear by Leavers) and it’s about time people stopped thinking the UK is some sort of special case that deserves rule bending from the EU. You got your Brexit, now learn to live with it.
