The BYD (EV) Thread

Can China's BYD and IM succeed in the UK as premium carmakers?

Both companies showcased striking new concepts at Geneva - could their entry into the UK be more plausible than others?

Lots of Chinese brands have called themselves 'upmarket' or 'premium' and said they planned to launch in Britain. And then didn't or at least haven't. But at the Geneva Motor Show we saw two new ones that probably have a more plausible route than most to UK showrooms, because of the companies they're spun out of – MG and BYD.

The BYD effort is by far the most striking. It's the Yanwang U8. 'Striking?' Yup, think Mercedes-AMG G63 given the Mansory treatment. And powered by four electric motors, so it can spin around in its own length.

Oh yeah, and it can float. Well, they call that an 'emergency' mode, and having seen a video of it, swimming like a slow hippo on a flat-calm pond, I wouldn't put to sea in it without a lifejacket, raft and distress flares. But if you were crossing a bog and things turned unexpectedly liquid, it would be more than handy.

The interior of this mammoth boxy rugged 4x4 is vastly luxurious and high-tech, and, in the case of the car at Geneva, vastly orange too. But other trims are available.

BYD adjusts targets: 20% EV growth in 2024, double its international sales

During an investor event, BYD shared its plans for this year and 2025. The company was previously aiming to ship 4 million NEVs this year, including plug-in hybrids and battery-powered cars. Yet, following the below-expectations performance in January and February it adjusted expectations to 3.6 million sales, which is still 20% higher than what it managed in 2023.

A big part of the growth will be overseas markets, where BYD sales in 2023 stood at 242,765, or about 8% of the total volume. This year, BYD hopes for 500,000 sales and in 2025 - 1 million. The Chinese manufacturer wants to bring its export shares to 14% this year, as long as the 3.6 million sales are reached.

The carmaker also confirmed it's about to release its fifth generation Dual Mode plug-in hybrid technology this May.

BYD's March sales are second highest in history, showing 147% growth

A new month has started, and so BYD has come out with its sales numbers for last month - March, that is. They are impressive, to say the least. BYD says it sold a total of 302,459 "new energy vehicles" or NEVs (which means battery electric EVs but also hybrids, keep in mind), of which 301,631 were passenger vehicles.

At this point, its total sales of NEVs have surpassed 7 million since it was founded. The March number is BYD's second highest in history, only bested by what it managed last December. With February being the month of the Chinese New Year when a lot of the country is on holiday for a prolonged period of time, it's no surprise that sales have only picked back up last month.

BYD goes on to specify that its sales growth this March compared to March 2023 was a whopping 147.8%, which probably speaks the most about the overall trend here, since we're comparing March to March, not December or any other month that may have different sales patterns in general.
