The BYD (EV) Thread

BYD's 7-seater EV Atto 8 coming to Europe next year to rival the Kia EV9

During the 2026 Paris Motor Show, BYD announced that its largest SUV, the Atto 8, is coming to the European market. This is a long, seven-seat EV, which aims to be an alternative to the Kia EV9 and the Hyundai Ioniq 9. It will also be available in the UK after other right-hand-drive countries like Australia receiveing it earlier this year.

The Atto 8 will come in two configurations in the UK - Design RWD and Excellence AWD. The RWD configuration offers one motor mounted on the rear axle, producing 449 hp, while the AWD variant adds an extra motor on the front, achieving a combined peak output of 754 hp.

Naturally, the RWD version has longer range - 652 km according to WLTP data, while the AWD settles for 602 km on a single charge.

Speaking of charge, the vehicle is fitted with BYD's Flash Charging tech, allowing the huge 115 kWh battery to go from 10 to 97% in just 9 minutes. And since the system uses one of BYD's Blade batteries, charging performance doesn't deteriorate as much when it's cold. BYD advertises 20-97% charging in -30 °C weather in just 12 minutes. BYD says Europe will have more than 3,000 fast-charging stations supporting BYD's Flash Charge by the end of next year.

BYD Shark 6 and Audi Q7 earn five-star Euro NCAP crash test ratings

The BYD Shark 6 and Audi Q7 have earned impressive Euro NCAP crash test ratings, with physical controls proving a major driver of their full-mark results…

Euro NCAP’s latest safety assessments show how conventional physical controls directly improve vehicle safety. Both the Audi Q7 and BYD Shark 6 achieved five-star safety ratings under the current testing procedures. Euro NCAP has long maintained the fitment of physical buttons (for operating basic tasks) is safer than having to navigate sub-menus on digital screens. As a result, it has updated its testing protocols to reward cars with well-placed physical switches for essential functions. In contrast, vehicles that rely heavily on central touchscreens run a higher risk of driver distraction.

So after initially commenting, BYD will not participate in “price wars” I see that they are now offering 40k off the dolphin surf (35k deal assist + 5k cash back) meaning a comfort model can be had for around 300k. Of course partly due to new models coming but I think more to do with the competition from Geely/Chery and the coming soon Arcfox. All this is a very good thing for consumers. Long may the race to the bottom, price wise, continue. We have been fleeced for far to long.
