This is a news articale from Richards Bay's local news paper "The Observer"

All the way from India - The cable carrying the few fibres no thicker than a human hair and that serves as the intercontinental information link, was brought ashore at Mthunzini's beach on Saturday for the final linkup. The cable was hauled ashore from the cable laying ship 'Teneo' [in the pictures backround]. Inset: Information highway in the palm of a hand. Hans Swanepoel from Subtech holds the cable that will carry information to the African continent.

We all know its the new undersea cable! Yes its finally here!! :D:D:D:):)

Yay! I'm from Richards Bay too, well Empangeni actually :P

We are all worrying about the Seacom cable, isn't this the EASSy cable, or something to that effect? Hmmm, I need to do more research on this cable...

Eassy is still one of the guvament's wet dreams :D. Can only be seacom. Have a look at their website they might have some more photos somewhere. www.seacom.mu

edit: I see it's only 108 days to switch on.... I've waited longer for ADSL lines to be installed!

Yay! so it is a few days early... it was supposed to be pulled ashore on the last day of this month! :D Well done Seacom!

So, when this cable goes live in 108 days, will this affect us with adsl at the moment? Or only those who are planning on applying for adsl?

Everybody...but don't expect price decreases. The nature of business is that ISP will want to protect revenues and just (hopefully) increase caps/speeds for customers.

If they were to increase my cap and speed, I'd be more than happy paying what I am paying now :)

prices will not decrease immediately because the ISPs have to end their contracts with Telkom. The richer ISPs might take dual contracts with Seacom (and their old Telkom contracts). The hope is that caps will increase pretty soon after June 2009. Hopefully by the year end you will see some really good uncapped options.

Maybe someone here from an ISP could give us an idea of what they have instore for the public?
*looks to MrBeep*

But can people that are say using DO 1,2 and 3 expect increases in their cap sizes?

with telkom? doubt it! :p

hehe... then on the other hand, they might give preferential treatment to their own customers and lock out the rest of the ISPs... that should have ended a long time ago... Telkom should not even be an ISP and a tier provider.

I sure do hope so otherwise I'm in trouble :p

For some reason I pictured the cable being much larger..guess I never really thought about it much seeing as the fibers are comparable to human hairs :P
