Howdy guy,

I would like to know if anyone has the Real Story on the unfinished overpass in cape town ?

Maybe Capetownguy who is really informed would know ?

I have heard the cafe sotry, the wont't match up story, the speedlimit of the curves story .. does anyone know for a fact ?

I remember reading in the paper probably about 5 years ago that they were finally going to finish the bridges in CT and everyone was thinking damn it is about time but still no progress.

It's so weird it's actually become a feature of the city. Can't imagine CT with a finished overpass...I think it adds to the quirkiness of the place and the many jokes. "you lot are so slow you can't even join two roads together :)"

PE also has an unfinished overpass too...

Most common rumors claim the flyovers weren't completed because they did not align correctly, or that they ran out of money.

The entire raised freeway is a bad piece of engineering.

The raised section of highway (N2) just past the N1 split, has camber problems. I've seen engineers working on the bridge pillars continuously for at least 2 years now. Not sure if they're correcting some of the engineering faults or if it's normal bridge maintenance.

The revenue generated from the constant film shoots must be immense.

Probably. Still is disconcerting driving along looking up and suddenly there's no more bridge.

Durban used to have a similar problem with an overpass that just ended in the middle of nowhere, After what must have been about 30 years they finally finished it and connected it to the right area etc...... Changed things quite drastically when they did finish it.

I thought that they were finally gonna be finished for 2010 - they go right into the stadium area...Would ease congestion a whole lot.

Where? Springfield over the Umgeni?

Nope, Near Albert Park... on the M4 coming in from the airport.

PE has the same thing.

If they not going to complete these passes now for 2010, my guess is they will never be completed.

It was a combination of budgetary and design problems.

The overpass is not needed.
The highways in the CBD cutting off the city from its harbour are more likely to be demolished than be completed. Although in the design of the bridges for pedestrians from the Holiday Inn to the waterfront, the height of the highways(if completed) was taken into account.

The preferred option would be an underground road link.
In terms of 2010 it would help slightly but not really since the main transport hubs are in the city and not via the N1 directly. On top of that nobody will be driving to the stadium during 2010 matches except VIP's/FIFA Family who again are located in the city at the FIFA hotel i.e. Grand Westin.

Post 2010 the IRT system will ensure easy access between the city and stadium and waterfront with 3 stations around the stadium.

These highways and the "highways to the stadium" sort of thinking is outdated and has no place in Cape Town's future.
The future envisioned is effective public transport, reconnecting the city to its harbour and even reclaiming the river/water stream that runs through the CBD.

Not really. Nobody will be driving on the N1 and be going directly to the stadium.
All spectator parking is in and around the CBD. FIFA and media hotels in the CBD. Main transport hub in the CBD.

No cars would be allowed into the stadium precinct 5 hours before matches before match days unless its the IRT system, FIFA Family/Sponsors, Media Shuttles etc.

As you can see from the conceptual plans to develop spaces around the harbour edge. The highways/freeways are not part of the future. Existing CTICC( bottom left). Phase 2 to go ahead north of that, with phase 3 post 2016(bottom right)

The argument, and I kid you not, council fellow said this on Cape Talk radio, is that if they complete the thing it's going to encourage more people to use the road and then there will be more congestion not less...

Never knew that. Where is it?

On Settlers Way, the m4. on the way to humewood. One that should have gone off to baakens street. And another about 200m down. Just past valley Road. Both of them can be seen on google earth. The baakens street one can be clearly seen from below. I remember looking up to it as a kid and wondering where on earth that is suppose to go.

I think though in CT it was planning for the future, PE was just mistakes! :D
