They are just doing it so that their revenue does not plummet, by giving gifts they make sure the price of telecoms stays high, but you think you are getting more.
How this affects there profits at the end of the day I do not know.

Here is a plan. If you want a cheap laptop for less than retail, then you sign a contract. Then sell the 2 phones. Then pay the whole 24 months in advance and give notice to cancel the contract after 24 months. What a bargain!... or am I missing something?

When are we going to see bonus points for usage under contract?
Eg for every R10's worth of data, you get 1 point.

Quite true: If they reduced the contract value by R500 over 24months instead of a "paid for freebie", total sales would take a big drop. Shareholders don't like sales to drop.

I just had a call from Cell-C asking me to change over to their network. I got offered a cheapy phone and R3500 cash plus they will cover the remaining 6 months of my Vodacom contract.

Seriously I have two contracts to renew soon, I am going to see who will give me the most money so that I can buy a HDTV with the cash instead of getting some silly fancy phone.
Cell-C is offering R7000 in total so all I would need is another R3000 to buy a HDTV..... Not bad business really

Exactly, we pay, these are not gifts and they are not free...
Do you really want or need the 'free gift' anyway?
Reward me, the loyal (stupid?) customer, with cheaper rates please! And stop wasting resources on *** we neither need nor want.
