The Geluksdam Farmers Association members decided to repair the potholes on the Mangaung Metro Municipality side of the Jagersfontein road. Once they received the necessary permission from the Department of Police Roads and Transport, they set to work. With a team of roughly 50 labourers, 8 bakkies and 3 tractors they embarked on repairing all the potholes in an estimated 30km stretch of road. The project took them 8 days over a period of a month to complete at a cost of roughly R75, 000 including all costs. No financial assistance from the province or any government department. It was repaired according to industry specifications and standards. An estimated 550 potholes were repaired. The Jagersfontein Farmers Association repaired approximately the same distance at the same cost on the Kopanong municipality side of the Jagersfontein road.

Compared to the 25km stretch of Road on the Abrahamskraal road, Bainsvlei, which was completed in a 6-month period by 25 labourers to only repair 575 potholes, at a total cost of R 3 million. Also, a 1,2km stretch of road in Kellys View was completed over a period of 3 months by 12 labourers to fix 135 potholes, at a total cost of R1 million. After 800m the tenderpreneur ran out of funds and the residents of Kellys View completed the remaining 400m by themselves at an estimated cost of R16, 000. Both were funded by the Department of Police Roads and Transport leadership programme.

The comparison of costs and quality of work shows why our province and metro are falling apart. Extravagant amounts of money are poured into the pockets of tenderpreneurs, while the residents must fit the bill via rates and taxes but are left without any services or roads to drive on.

Lekker in die Vrystaat...

Tender R1.5 million to do the job in 50 days, then hire the farmers to do it for R100K in 10 days...

Everyone wins...

Kroonstad
And the N6 is even more disgusting. An endless story.

The thing is, these fsckrs are coining it from the tax coffers, vastly reducing the funds available for education, safety, food and shelter for the poorest of the poor. Yet somehow we tolerate it, turn a blind eye, because it's BEE, AA and transformation  How fscking stupid can you get?

Sadly the common garden variety ANC voter can like to be too daft to grasp whats what here...They will see this as R75,000 that was lost..KFC income down the drain.

Will take trillions, maybe even gazillions, of years of high quality educashion to help them overcome their stupidity...

Look obviously the tenderpreneurs inflated costs and are milking the tenders but that R75000 is not a feasible number if you have to comply with all the regulations.

In that pic alone they have a single cone for road traffic management. Insanely dangerous on a national road. There's even a car approaching them in the distance that has to cross into the next lane. Zero reflective vests also.

Road traffic management requires them to set up multiple signs with flashing lights and have flagmen warning oncoming drivers of the work being done on the blacktop.

Each of the workers has to have done a yearly medical, health and safety training etc.

So yes. Well done to the farmers association, great initiative, but unless the communities are willing to sponsor the projects themselves like this and are willing to take the risk of working on the national road without safety regulations then it's not feasible going forward
