Finally!!!!

Fibre Optic cable rollout

Posted on 1st April 2016 by CVWA

At a full Council sitting, The City of Cape Town last night approved the Link Africa agreement for utilizing the storm water and sewer pipes for Fibre Optic cable rollout – and Constantia is the first beneficiaries of this system as we have piloted this scheme as a community initiative. The agreement applies to the whole metropole. Constantia then Bergvliet and Tokai will be the first areas to roll out in the Southern Suburbs.

The infrastructure has already started going into the ground , so get on to the top of the list for link up – visit www.constantiafibre.com to sign up with an ISP of your choice if you haven’t already done so – and move out of the dark ages of unreliable adsl !

Regards

Mike Voortman (Chairman)

Great news! This is good for the rest of Cape Town too, as the long term plans for Frogfoot FTTH are quite far reaching.

The reliability and service I have received from this service (especially over Vox) has been exceptional. No slowdowns, ever. good value for money... I'm a very satisfied customer.

At long last. Fortunately they've already trenched past my house and blown the fibre - just waiting for the connection and splicing

So Telkom dug up my driveway on Sat 16 Apr. The following Sunday, after heavy rain on the Friday, my electricity goes down. Just my house! Eventually the City council repair the cable after 23 hours without power, saying Telkom must have damaged to electricity cable sheath, allowing water to seep in. Also cost me over R1000 to get other issues sorted out as I was out of town at the time. :-(

Anyhow, Vox tell me that Telkom have now lit up my street, which means I can now get fibre ... at double the Frogfoot option fee. As Frogfoot won't be down the Doordrift area for some time, think I may go with the Telkom/Vox month-to-month option and then decide if I'll swap to Frogfoot or not at the time they eventually reach my street. Will just have to pay the connection fee twice, but Frogfoot/Vox will provide double the speed and way more data for the same cost.

I'm in the same boat, not really sure what to do? Telkom guys said it should be done around my area off Doordrift within the next 2 months or so.

Now that the trenching has been completed, Telkom are presently laying the actual fibre in the Doordrift area (Lochner Rd today).

Apparantly the fibre must be installed by 10 June, but delays in receiving equipment from suppliers may delay things a bit. Looks like the Telkom fibre will be lit from end June.

As for Link Africa, they will only announce the roll out plan for the Doordrift area at the end of June.

Two years late and I see from the Fb page that my zone has been delayed (yet again!) for some drilling application.

We received an update from Frogfoot today. Where are you located?

I'm off Doordrift Rd. Telkom dug FTTH around my house several months ago. Frogfoot haven't come yet. Honestly, as this stage, I am willing to take anything I can get right now.

Most people in my road have gone with Openserve/Telkom. I've just given in after waiting two years for Constantia Fibre to get to my zone (with more delays and no updates), so have just signed up with Openserve/Vox.

I'm also going with OpenServe. Haven't decided on an ISP yet. What's your experience with vox been like?

Vox has been responsive to my queries, but the street-to-house contractor had huge problems trying to find the main fibre cable and junction box running past my house! Took them three days just to install the fibre into the house. Once they placed the box on the wall, it would not connect.

Had to call in the original street fibre people (arrived three weeks later) and it took them a couple of days to figure out what was happening. They say the fibre-to-the-house contractor cut the main street fibre cable during all the digging and cable searching. Would not surprise me as they cut the electricity cable to a neighbor. Then one of the other crew say the cable down our street was never certified as being installed correctly in the first place ...

Over a month later and OpenServe are still awating additional cabling before finally fixing their street installation. Only then can Vox install the router ... aarggg!!!!
