Assassinated, murdered, killed, doesn't matter.

I can remember that we were on vacation in the Lowveld, and on the day (or was it day after???) he was assassinated, we returned to civilization.

Driving alone by myself I was struck by an unnatural tension in the air, and wondered what was it all about...

Keep in mind there was no radio, television, cellphones or newspapers that time - we were cut off from the world at large.

Only when I watched the news that night did I realize what happened...
 
Our pass was cancelled as all SADF personnel had to be on stand by in case of mass unrest...guess we were fortunate it never hit the fan. Tense times.

It was some time around Easter cos if I recall it was Easter pass that got screwed up.
 
Lets be truthful now. I, and I suspect many others too, had never heard much about Chris Hani until after he died. Now there seems to be a lot of hero worship around this guy.

He was head of the armed wing of the ANC (MK). He was also someone who wanted a Marxist communism regime for our country (ala Zimbabwe and Mugabe) and he was prepared to do it by blowing up innocent people.

He was also involved in repressing dissent in the ANC exile camps where lots of atrocities occured.

Let's just remember who and what this guy stood for before throwing roses on his grave.

The irony the guy used to kill and a place that is supposed to safe lives get named after him :p
 
I was a Sunday morning. What made you think of a dead terrorist after all this time?
 
I think if enough people say he was a hero and an icon and all the rest, anyone would believe it.

Heck, he wasn't even disadvantaged. He studied and gained a BA in English, Greek and Latin in this country.

In any case, who exactly on the forum is throwing roses on his grave? Could you point out the posts please.

True, a lot of the stories were suppressed from us, but our family had access to most news. We saw pictures of Mandela before most in our South Africa and read his writings. Hani never figured much. Biko also not. We also knew when an how Biko died and all the circumstances - not commonly known then.

Hani was banned, yes, but unlike Mandela, the government wanted him dead. Three unsuccessful assasination attempts, so he was obviously considered a very dangerous man who wanted a communist regime.

... re. roses. Yes this appears to be a tribute thread spun off from another.
