Demonic Dodge ready to raise hell
Two years ago Dodge rocked the performance world when it launched two of the planet's most powerful muscle cars – the Challenger SRT Hellcat and Charger SRT Hellcat. Now the all-American brand is raising hell again with the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, its ultimate performance car.
The Hellcat versions already live up to their names with their fang-baring outputs of 527kW and 881Nm of torque – courtesy of a supercharged 6.2-litre Hemi engine.
The Challenger SRT Demon promises even more hellish performance and will presumably be powered by fire and brimstone, although to see what the car looks like and to find out just how much it's packing under the hood you'll have to wait until the car's official unveiling at the New York International Auto Show in April.

But if you are, fear not, for Dodge has found yet more power somewhere within its HQ. April’s New York motor show will yield the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon.
The Demon, if the name isn’t enough of a clue, should be feared. As should anything that sits above the Hellcat in a range of cars. The teaser video above should also give you some idea of how ferocious this car will be. As well as being utterly odd.
There’s going to be a teaser video each week, with more actual information on the car hopefully contained in each. This first one is good for drama and special effects, but it reveals little other than the car will be quite unhinged. And probably quite at home on a drag strip.

The Dodge Challenger is just one of many muscle cars that we don’t get here in South Africa, and it already has an extra-hot variant in the shape of the Hellcat. But the American manufacturer has it in mind that this 527 kW isn’t powerful enough for a flagship variant.
Images of the rumoured Challenger Demon have already been leaked, but the video below and the two pictures above provide fans with a first official look at the car.
Seeing as this is just a teaser, Dodge has not revealed any performance figures, but considering that the rear wheels are wrapped in 315/40 R18 Nitto NT05R drag radials, the peak output is bound to be plenty. Dodge has confirmed that the Demon will be more powerful than the Hellcat, as well as around 90 kg lighter.
Dodge also says that the Challenger Demon will feature new suspension, braking, wheel, and interior components, but we’ll find out more at its official reveal at the New York Auto Show in April.

Police Arrest Idiot With Challenger Hellcat For Speeding At 158 MPH
In this week’s installment of dumbass with fast car does predictable thing, a Chicago man was arrested and had his car impounded for reportedly bringing his 707-horsepower Challenger Hellcat to speeds upwards of 160 mph.
According to Everbridge Nixle, a website that shares public-safety information, an Indiana State Trooper clocked 30 year-old Christopher Garza driving his 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat at a speed of 158 mph on a county road with a speed limit of 70 mph. The officer got another reading on his radar gun of 151 mph and pursued the vehicle.
Garza pulled over and told the officer that he had just purchased the 707-HP muscle car and wanted to show his two friends what it could do. The driver stated that he was well aware that he was approaching 160 mph, but figured that this road was “the safest place” show off his brand new muscle car. Our friends at The Drive point out that this particular road is not in the most ideal condition for high-speed runs. Had Garza lost control of his Hellcat at this speed, the likely results would have been tragic for him and his two friends.

The trooper placed Garza under arrest and charged him with arrest for reckless driving. His two companions were taken to a local hotel, and the Hellcat sits in a police impound lot.

With a starting U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $71,495 (including gas guzzler tax, excluding destination $1,095), the new Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody model features the same fender flares first shown on the SRT Demon. These wider fender flares add 3.5 inches to the SRT Hellcat's overall width, covering the new 20 x 11-inch "Devil's Rim" split-five spoke aluminum wheels, which ride on new, wider 305/35ZR20 Pirelli P-Zero tires with a new tread pattern. A new electric power steering (EPS) system with SRT Drive Modes adds new selectable steering tuning for the first time on a Hellcat model.
In addition to its wider, more menacing stance, this new Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody delivers improved lap times, lateral grip, acceleration and braking, compared with the already ferocious performance numbers of the Hellcat:

FCA selling its 527 kW 6,2-litre Hellcat V8 … in a crate
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Mopar brand has announced the availability of a 6,2-litre supercharged crate Hemi engine kit – aptly dubbed the “Hellcrate” – churning out 527 kW and 881 N.m.
On display at SEMA 2017, Mopar says its “Hellcrate” kit provides “relatively simple plug and play” and includes a powertrain control module, power distribution centre, engine wiring harness, chassis harness, accelerator pedal, ground jumper, oxygen sensors, charge air temperature sensors and fuel pump control module for the 6,2-litre supercharged V8.
Interestingly, the brand says the kit is “optimised for use with manual transmissions”. Furthermore, it is apparently intended for pre-1976 street and off-road vehicles.
A front end accessory drive kit, which includes an alternator, power steering pump, belts, pulleys and more, is among additional engine accessory hardware components available.
The kit ships in packaging featuring the “Hellcrate” logo and includes in-depth information sheets with “helpful installation tips and requirements”. Purchasing the entire package will also buy you a three-year/unlimited mileage warranty.
So, what about the price? Well, the Mopar “Hellcrate” 6,2-litre supercharged Crate Hemi Engine assembly kit (to use its full name) will retail for $19 530 (about R274 595), while the Mopar “Hellcrate” 6,2-litre supercharged Crate Hemi engine kit adds another $2 195 (around R30 870)…
