Uvalde, Texas - Okay, we get it. Everything in Texas has to be bigger, wider, louder and faster. Texas is, after all, the only state in the union that has a road signposted with an 85mph (136km/h) speed limit, where everybody else is limited to 75 (120km/h).

So it comes as no surprise to hear that John Hennessey’s idea of Christmas spirit is high-octane petrol - and the world’s fastest Christmas tree.

First he got hold of the nice guys at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and borrowed a Dodge Challenger Hellcat Widebody - a red one, of course - to see just how fast he could go with a three-metre fir tree strapped to the roof.

Sea Sucker put its reputation where its suckers were with a suction cup-mount roof rack and Lowe’s provided a real Christmas tree (they don’t do plastic in the Lone Star State). Continental Tyre offered the use of the egg-shaped 13.4 kilometre main circuit at its proving ground 130km west of San Antonio, and it was Game On!

Foot flat

As you’d expect, the Hellcat’s 520kW supercharged 6.2-litre V8 powered the Red Sled up to the equivalent of 260km/h very quickly - but it took a long, nerve-wracking, foot flat run to squeeze out the last 18km/h.

And then comes the most astonishing moment of the whole five-and-a-half-minute video. Hennessey takes his foot off the loud pedal, and then takes both hands off the wheel while the Challenger is still doing way over 250km/h, to move the mike closer to his face and record the top speed: “One seventy-four!"

The car, to Dodge’s eternal credit, runs straight and true hands-off, and then effortlessly lights up the rear tyres in a celebratory burnout. Which is Hennessey’s way of reminding us 'tis the season to be jolly. Enjoy.

Dodge//SRT continues to run at full throttle in the North American large sedan segment, revamping the entire Charger lineup for 2019. As America's only four-door muscle car and the sales leader in the segment five years running, Dodge continues to charge ahead of its competition with upgrades both inside and out.

New for 2019, Dodge is repositioning the Charger lineup into six distinct, attitude-infused models that offer a range of performance and powertrain options for every modern muscle-car customer. The lineup ranges from the 707-horsepower Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat - the quickest, fastest and most powerful sedan in the world - to the efficient V-6 power of the new Charger GT RWD performance model and the all-wheel-drive capability of the new SXT AWD model.

"Despite a shift toward utility vehicles in the United States over the past decade, the Dodge Charger and Challenger continue to buck the trend," said Steve Beahm, Head of Passenger Car Brands, Dodge//SRT, Chrysler and FIAT - FCA North America. "Charger and Challenger retail sales have increased 70 percent since 2008, and since the launch of Scat Pack in August 2014, high-performance model sales increased from 4 percent to more than 25 percent. Charger is on track to lead the large car segment in the United States for the fifth straight year in 2018, and we intend to keep that string alive by updating the product to deliver the performance and capability that our customers demand."

Dealer orders for the 2019 Dodge Charger open in late June 2018 and vehicles are scheduled to arrive in Dodge dealerships in the third quarter of 2018.

Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

The 2019 Charger SRT Hellcat remains the quickest, fastest and most powerful sedan in the world with the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 that delivers 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to the quick-shifting TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

New for 2019, the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat features a new performance grille with dual inlets that feed cooler, outside air into the engine compartment. Bolstering the performance is the addition of four race-inspired technologies that come standard on Hellcat, including:

Launch Assist, which uses wheel speed sensors to watch for driveline-damaging wheel hop at launch and, in milliseconds, modifies the engine torque to regain full grip
Line Lock, which engages the front brakes to hold the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat stationary, but leaves the rear wheels free for a burnout to heat up and clean the rear tires
After-Run Chiller, which keeps cooling the supercharger/charge air cooler after the engine is shut off
Torque Reserve, which closes a bypass valve to prefill the supercharger and manages fuel flow and spark advance to balance engine rpm and torque, generates a reserve of torque that is delivered upon acceleration from a standing stop
New instrument panel badging, a Satin Black painted hood option, available Brass Monkey 20-inch forged wheels and an Alcantara interior package are also new to Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat for the 2019 model year.

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

Dodge continues to push the performance envelope in 2019, using its high-performance engine street credibility to elevate its entire Challenger lineup, introducing the most powerful supercharged SRT Hellcat lineup ever with horsepower output now starting at 717. And that's just the beginning.

Following a record-setting year with the introduction of the limited-production Dodge Challenger SRT Demon - the quickest, fastest and most powerful muscle car ever - Dodge//SRT is going back to its muscle car roots by taking its biggest, most powerful engine - the supercharged HEMI Demon V-8 - and leveraging its enormous power output to boost the performance of the Hellcat. The result: the 797-horsepower 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye.

Also new for 2019, Dodge offers the Widebody Package on the Challenger R/T Scat Pack model, which adds 3.5 inches to the overall width, improving handling and braking to the naturally aspirated muscle car. At the track, larger six-piston Brembo front brakes, wider wheels and tires, and suspension upgrades featured on the R/T Scat Pack Widebody equate to 2-second faster lap times or approximately 12 car lengths at a 2.1-mile road course, compared with the non-Widebody Challenger R/T Scat Pack.

2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat lineup: more horses, expanded technologies and more features

From 717 to 797 horsepower, Dodge is delivering the most powerful Challenger SRT Hellcat lineup ever. Both a manual and automatic transmission are available to handle the immense horsepower and torque output.

The Challenger SRT Hellcat receives a standard Tremec six-speed manual transmission, while the efficient TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmission is available.

The Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye's supercharged high-output engine is paired to the TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmission. Internal changes to the transmission include an upgraded torque converter that delivers an 18 percent increase in torque multiplication when compared with the standard Challenger SRT Hellcat.

Dodge Challenger Redeye: the T Rex of muscle-cars

Since the demise of the ill-fated DaimlerChrysler merger, Dodge has gone back to its roots, re-inventing itself through its SRT performance department as America’s quintessential muscle-car brand. Sadly, the two-door Challenger and its four-door Charger stablemate aren’t made in right-hand drive so they're not available in South Africa, but the numbers make for fascinating reading nonetheless.

Bigger and heavier than a Mustang, Corvette or Camaro, the Dodge Challenger relies on the old-school values of its Hemi engines - big displacement, heavily force-fed V8s delivering monumental torque at relatively low revs - to get the job done, and justify calling it ‘America’s most powerful, quickest and fastest muscle car’.

Not counting electric sedans and hybrids, that is - Chrysler has been forced to concede that even its most muscular Hemi won’t stay with a standard Tesla Model S sedan off the line.

In that way the barking mad 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye flagship model, revealed in detail today, is a dinosaur - but it is the Tyrannosaurus Rex of dinosaurs, boasting a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 rated for 594kW and a whiplash-inducing 957Nm. And it gets those numbers the old-fashioned way, with a bigger, 2.7-litre supercharger, an uprated oil-pump, beefed-up pistons and con rods, a high-speed valve train and a special fuel-injection system.

All of which gets laid down via an eight-speed automatic transmission and your choice of two final drive ratios. The standard ratio is 2.62:1, but you can opt for a shorter 3.09:1 diff for ‘enhanced launch capability’, that will launch the Redeye off the line to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds, and dispose of the standing quarter-mile (402 metres) in 10.8 seconds at 210km/h. With the longer diff and a long enough straight, the maker quotes a top speed of 326km/h.

The Redeye comes with a twin-scoop aluminium bonnet that harks back to the Chrysler muscle-cars of the 1970s (the scoops are not just for show; the left one leads straight into the air-filter housing), lightweight 20 inch satin black wheels (brass-finished five-spoked rims are an option) Brembo brakes, adaptive damping and traction control.

Also available will be a satin black-finished boot lid spoiler, and a widebody package that adds 44mm on each side to the width of the car, making room for 20 inch forged-alloy wheels shod with Pirelli P-Zero gumballs.

Inside, the Redeye has a leather-trimmed flat-bottom steering wheel and sports seats trimmed in Houndstooth cloth with silver contrast stitching; various combinations of leather and alcantara trim are available to order.

We don’t know how much longer Dodge will be permitted to make big-hearted redneck cars like this (there are persistent rumours that FCA is planning to phase out the Charger/Challenger line) but for now we’re just glad that they do.

Should I buy one?

There will likely be a limited number of parallel imports from the States, but Dodge has given up on the UK and there is close to zero chance that the Redeye will ever cross the Atlantic through official channels.

In the US, it makes a strong bang-per-buck case for itself; the standard Redeye costs almost exactly the same as an Audi RS5 but has close to twice the power, although the Widebody carries a $6000 supplement.

The Challenger is getting old – it’s 10 years since it first went on sale – and lesser versions are rapidly falling into obsolescence. SRT versions like this still provide plenty of marketing sizzle, though, and it’s hard not to see the appeal of this most muscular of muscle cars.
