SRT Performance Division, Creator of Bad Boys Like Those Dodge Hellcats, Has Been Neutered
Many feared that the Chrysler brand was about to be axed by Stellantis. That didn’t happen, and as it turns out we were all looking at the wrong brand to fall.
The muscle-minded Street and Racing Technology skunkworks — responsible for such cars as the Hellcat family at Dodge — is no more, at least as a standalone group. It’s kind of shocking, given that SRT has been responsible for some of Dodge’s and Ram’s greatest cars. Why would Stellantis mess with that?
Thankfully, it’s not all grim news.
Stellpower reached out to Stellantis and got some clarification:

In February 2021, all of the core elements of the SRT performance engineering team were integrated into Stellantis’ global engineering organization.
This action will have the two-way benefit of ensuring that our brands’ SRT and performance-focused product offerings continue to meet the highest quality standards and expectations, while delivering key learnings from motorsports and other high-performance-technology applications across a wider mix of our company’s product lines.
These products have delighted enthusiasts for nearly two decades, and Stellantis will continue to sell and develop the next generation of Dodge//SRT-branded vehicles, as well as Jeep and Ram vehicles that utilize high-performance SRT technology.
In short, SRT is no longer its own entity. Instead, its team is dispersed within the rest of Stellantis. The vehicles that wore SRT badges in the past will continue to do so in the future. It looks as if the Hellcats and similarly hopped- up Dodges, Jeeps and Rams will roar on, at least for now.

Cars and Coffee events in the United States are very popular but a recent one in Loveland, Colorado will be removed from that list following an incident.
Thanks to the driver of a black Dodge Challenger Hellcat, the Loveland Cars & Coffee will be no longer after colliding with a Silverado when leaving the event.
Footage recorded by attendees shows the muscle car leaving the function, but it doesn’t take long until it wreaks havoc. In an attempt to show off and impress the crowds, the driver makes an error resulting in the loss of control and collision with the Silverado.

I’m in the middle of a full week with this magical machine, and even though the weather hasn’t been ideal for my first outing in a rear wheel drive performance car that boasts almost 800 horsepower, I’ve been having one hell of a time. Not only is the most satisfying gas-guzzler I’ve ever driven, but everyone in my entire family has been fielding questions about it wherever we go. I dropped my younger sister off at her math class, and all the preteens were ogling at the window. I dropped my mom off at the Nissan dealership to pick up her Armada, and she had to let people know that, no, this isn’t actually her daughter’s car. My neighbors hear the doors unlock and wait outside to ask if that’s what they think it is. My grandpa won’t stop asking for photos. My brother asked if he can have the engine to put in his Scamp. I think this is the first time my mom has been legitimately impressed by the fact that I write about cars, whereas most of the time she's just glad I've found something to do that makes me happy.

I’m not going to lie: if I had throwing-around money, I’d absolutely buy the 2021 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody, and I would be awful about it. I would read off every single word of the name every time someone asked me about it like I’m out here reciting my bougie bitch Starbucks order because I want you to know it’s the top-of-the-line machine. I’d drink out of a Hellcat water bottle and wear nothing but one of seven Hellcat shirts I would also own. I would wake up every neighbor in the morning when I take off to Target before all the rabble arrives. I’d let the damn thing idle for a few minutes when I got home because everyone needs to know who’s the badass in the neighborhood.
The Charger Hellcat is not a subtle car for subtle people. It exudes big-dick energy and demands you turn your head to follow it down the road. It’s a conversation piece. It’s the car equivalent of a gym bro grunting as he drops his weights so everyone knows how hard he’s working. It’s going to boost your confidence one thousand fold every time you even think about it. It’s ordering the largest steak on the menu because you’re a goddamned red-blooded American, and you’re going to flex that at every opportunity.

By not fixing what ain't broke, Dodge is raking in the cash with its Charger and Challenger muscle cars, and Durango SUV. But even that strategy has a limit. Dodge is overdue for new blood in its lineup, and rumor suggests it could get some from Italy in the form of an Alfa Romeo Tonale-based crossover called the Hornet.
Revealed as a concept in 2019, the Tonale will be a compact hybrid crossover that Automotive News reports will borrow a platform from the Jeep Compass. Construction will be undertaken by Alfa's Pomigliano D'Arco factory outside Naples, Italy, where Passione Auto Italiane reports the Tonale will share a production line with the Dodge Hornet. While no hybrid option for the Hornet was mentioned, both vehicles will allegedly be built with the 2.0-liter turbo engine employed in the Wrangler.

Said to be an Americas-oriented model, the Hornet, if introduced here, would mark Dodge's first new model in the United States since the 2013 Dart, and its first fresh utility vehicle since the 2011 Durango. Stellantis has an active interest in the Hornet nameplate, as suggested by active USPTO filings for "Hornet" and "Dodge Hornet."

Tonale production, however (and potentially this rumored Hornet), was reportedly delayed 12 weeks after Alfa's new CEO, formerly of Peugeot, demanded better performance from the Tonale's PHEV drivetrain. As of April, Automotive News reports, Stellantis aimed to commence Tonale production in March 2022 and begin sales on June 4 of next year. Hypothetically, that puts the Dodge Hornet's arrival in about the same time frame.

Curiously, when the original Italian story hit Reddit, one commenter chimed in claiming to be working at Stellantis on this very vehicle, and didn't deny the use of the Hornet name. They did, however, answer the question that's on all of your minds, stating there aren't plans for a Hellcat version, though that doesn't count out some SRT model in the future. Or, for that matter, an off-road hybrid like the Jeep Compass 4xe, though don't expect an entirely electric version at any point—that's the territory of the other little new Jeep.

Dodge used to be a fairly regular car company that would sell you a truck or sedan or van if you wanted, competing with the Chevys and Fords and Chryslers of the world. That is, until Ram split from Dodge and Dodge spent the last decade leaning into American muscle cars. These days, it’s leaning into cringe.
No one can force you to watch the following video, part of Stellantis’s EV Day on Thursday, but I recommend it. The vibes are dad-who-threw-a-touchdown-in-high-school-30-years-ago-and-really-wants-to-tell-you-about-it, but so much worse.
“Dodge will not sell electric cars,” Tim Kuniskis, CEO of Dodge says, “but Dodge will sell American muscle. So if a charger can make a Charger quicker, we’re in.”
Kuniskis then goes on about how, actually, Dodges are really popular with millennials (sure?), and that millennials have lots of spending power (haha), and that millennials are into EVs (this is actually true) and this is how Dodge is going to grow the “Dodge brotherhood” — women don’t seem to be in the picture here.

Alex Taylor Is Taking On The Boys One Drag Race At A Time
Taylor will be taking part in the Hellcat Grudge Race at this weekend's Roadkill Nights.
When Alex Taylor was 16 years old, she lined her 1968 Camaro up on the start line during Hot Rod Magazine’s 2013 Drag Week. It was her debut on the big stage, and she was looking to prove herself on multiple levels. She was young. She was a woman. And she and her family had prepped what she called the Badmaro for both competition and daily driving. She was there to start living her dream.
“I grew up in the shop,” Taylor told me in a recent interview with Jalopnik. “My dad, as a profession, is a builder Jim, a little bit more from the street side, the show car side. Regardless, I was still always in the shop, always super hands on. I was always the kid that was asking the questions. I wanted to know how things worked, why I did this. And thankfully for me, I had a dad that was also very much a teacher.”
Her family initially bought the Badmaro for Debbie Taylor, Alex’s mom, but it quickly became clear that the family’s young daughter was destined to be behind the wheel. Her father, Dennis Taylor, helped her learn what she needed to know to build and prep a race car. Her mother served as her co-pilot. Together, they made Alex the youngest competitor ever to enter Drag Week.

Dodge is desperately in need of new vehicles. The current three-model lineup consisting of the Dodge Charger, Challenger, and Durango is not sustainable. Not long ago, Dodge confirmed an all-electric muscle car is due in 2024 but there'll be another new model debut prior to that. And no, it won't be a muscle car but rather a slick and sporty SUV called the Hornet.
According to Mopar Insiders, the Dodge Hornet (the 2006 concept is pictured below) will debut for the 2023 model year as the distant corporate cousin of the also upcoming (and recently delayed) Alfa Romeo Tonale. A slide from a recent presentation given by Stellantis CEO Carlo Tavares shows Dodge will launch an unnamed PHEV sometime in 2022. In March 2020, then-FCA filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the Hornet nameplate.

Put that all together - plus another recent rumor - and it's quite clear what Dodge has planned. Aside from very different styling inside and out, the SUVs will pack separate powertrains. The Hornet is expected to be powered by the familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque that's already found in other Stellantis group models, like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid.
The Tonale is expected to have a 1.5-liter inline-four with mild-hybrid tech. It's possible that the engine could be offered in the Hornet alongside the 2.0 though this remains uncertain.

What is for sure is the Hornet having an optional all-wheel drive system. In case you're wondering, Dodge does consider the Hornet to be the Journey's replacement despite the fact it won't offer a third row of seats and will be based on a subcompact platform. In our eyes, that makes it more of a replacement for the Dodge Caliber which went out of production in 2012. The Journey was only discontinued in 2020 after an 11-year run.
Since then, Dodge has not had a crossover in its lineup which is kind of a problem considering the segment's immense and growing popularity. The Hornet aims to fix that and because it's from Dodge, it should be a lot of fun to drive. Hornet production should get underway alongside the Tonale in the middle of next year at the Pomigliano D'Arco assembly plant in Italy.
