The Droid TV thread

I would not touch roku ever again. Support is absolute crap.
Mine stopped working and now can't be fixed.
Just like that one day not coming on.
They won't even assist. I must buy a new one
How old is it? and where did you buy it from?

Nope checked it and used new power supply.

Had the same happen to me when I was busy plugging in and unplugging cables in my media setup so I know what it's like :( I was of course referring to how user friendly the Roku is.

Agreed it's a great unit but they have little faith in their devices only offering 6 months and once it breaks sorry for you.

Have you tried it yet? What's new?
Hoping for a new custom rom from Jacque. ☺

I've been running the new Finless 2.1 rom because it looks like Bob does some extra tweaks to improve the rom. First impression is that there is too much Finless branding which does not suite my taste so I changed the launcher to SquareHome.Tablet (Play Store) and am much happier.

The rom is smooth and has fixed the BBC iPlayer video issue but no such luck with DSTV Now even though the Supersport apps works well. He has also provide an improved xbmc v13.4.

Here is the change log for 111K4 for those who haven seen it from the official Beelink stock rom.

111k4->(Based on AML latest official SDK(1114))
1.Update xbmc (Based on SPMC13.4.0 --Thanks to koying);
2.Update Skype;
3.Ethernet MAC (No need to modify Ethernet MAC by tool ,it can be produced by FW automatically and be unique)
4.Compatible with our R89 IR Remote;
5.UPdate DLNA&Airplay;
6.Fix some issues on some streaming APP,such as Hulu,BBC ..
7.Many fixes on multimedia playing..
8.Other little tweaks.

On Finless, ... more like too much Geekbying branding and Bob second .... All Finless Bob roms have branding :whistle:
Yeah BBC I player now works and Netflix is the best yet, Seems that M-GO will work too ... A lot of improvements on all aml video codecs and that rivals the Minix and Geniatech ATV players. I have extensively tested last week checking the codec support and I can say I'm pleased for once :-) This is made on the latest AML SDK. Beelink provides extensive support for the products.

Be careful of installing Bob's rom for the MXIII ... it installs TWRP recovery :p and not stock, if you know how to roll back ... Good for u

Finless 2.1 rom added the following on top of 111k4:

1) While 111K4 was rooted from the factory it was outdated and did not have the SU updates needed.
I re-rooted the ROM properly. This includes the new SELinux SU library and xbin files.

2) Updated Google framework core files. The ones in the stock ROM were out of date.
On first boot NOTHING will need to be updated once you logon to Google Play.
That is as of this date.

3) Debloated of junk APPs and Google Apps you can get from Google Play.
There was quite a few useless hidden apps in this KitKat release! Some of them did not even work.
I did remove XBMC and other pre-install APPs as well. I like a CLEAN ROM that you the user can setup the way you want.
Having APPs in /system leaves that junk in there forever (unless you delete them by hand with a root explorer).
NOTE: The XBMC that came with 111K4 is in this ZIP package (Oman modified). Feel free to install it if you like.

4) As always, full init.d support! If you do not know what that is... ignore it. For geeks that want to use it. It is there!
This time around due to updated security in 4.4, init.d was a lot harder to get working.
Again I had to figure it out!

5) I fixed the AOSP Launcher for several things:
Removed the Google search bar by request.
Added more than one screen for scrolling.
Updated the dock icons to things more useful.
Apps installed with Google Play will automatically be added to the home screen.
I think you will like this launcher better

6) Build.prop edit to open up the Google Play store to APPs that normally say "not compatible".
I am spoofing a Samsung device (Nexus 10) that will show almost any APP as compatible.
This should also allow Netflix HD but I have not tested it.
Your device will show up in google play as Nexus 10 device not a S82/S89! Understand this please.
I also left the original build.prop in the ROM called build.orig.
If you want to go back, just use ES FIle Explorer or a root file explorer and rename build.prop to build.old
Then rename build.orig to build.prop.
Go into settings, apps, all and go into the Google Play app. Clear the cache and data.
Reboot! You should be back to showing up as a S82/S89.

7) TWRP recovery is intsalled with this ROM. Special thanks to FreakTab developer Abdul_pt!
If you don't want TWRP recovery, I give you a recovery flasher ZIP that you can use to flash back to a stock recovery that works (fixed).

8) I added a reboot APP that will allow optional reboot options like reboot to recovery for easier updates.

9) Adjusted more permission that Google now checks for which should give even better Google Play compatibility.

10) I still had to remove the hw.nophone=false from build.prop as this breaks streaming apps like Bell TV.
Not sure after reporting this issue why Beelink did not also do this?

11) CPU fixer patches!
In this ZIP is a CPU_fixer folder. These zips can be used to adjust your minimum CPU frequency and Governor.
See the README.txt in that folder for an explanation and how to install them.

12) Carrier spoofs for better APP compatibility.

13) The usual tweaks I do for better performance e.g. TCP buffers sizes, etc etc.

14) Did a little "themeing" to the AOSP Launcher stock wallpaper.

I tested both roms. Can't wait for Jacque to try his hand on the stock rom and incorporate some of his changes and Finless changes into the the new rom. These roms needs customization ... BIG time ... Ugly boot loaders on both of them

This is the first time I've tried a Finless rom as the feedback from the users looked positive and it seems some extra effort is put into the performance of the rom. Do you have a different view?
Is there a problem with having TWRP recovery? They do provide a method to return to stock.

Performance yes it's there for sure, due to de bloating of software and partitioning. Addition of extra functionality is always welcomed. These are given to the factory to be included

TWRP recovery is nice and more and more are leaning towards it. Possibilities are endless, Developers are doing a petty decent job with this recovery method. Just scared of the normal user that doesn't know how to flash back to stock for instance a Mediaman rom that won't install as it uses stock rather than TWRP. Some folks don't know how to use recovery and giving them more "power" could perma brick their devices. Some of the TWRP recoveries have "advanced" recovery methods that skips signature checks etc

Is there any view of an updated ROM for the MXIII with Kodi 14.0?
Will a patch be released to provide all the customization to XBMC/Kodi as I really miss it in the latest ROM?

No patch, it's set on boot by firmware installation, we might have in the future.
