The Droid TV thread

I'll test that later, but it should work flawlessly with the Mele F10 Pro or regular kb/mouse. That would turn the droidTV MX into an affordable and compact Windows or Linux terminal solution.

Thanks, yeah that's my thinking...

...And to add to that, the Mele F10 Pro makes an awesome presentation device - wireless, able to use the mouse and have a full keyboard for entering web addresses, etc.

Has anybody installed the 1.1.7 firmware yet?

Download it here (1.1.7 beta):
http://matricom.net/wiki/MX2#Firmware
-Unzip that to the root of an SD card and plug the SD card into the droidTV box
-Unplug the DroidTV box
-Get a toothpick and depress the rest button (inside the AV port) while plugging it back in
-Wait 20-30 seconds before releasing the button
-It should flash the box with new firmware

I am testing new firmware now and will report back. I'm happy to report XBMC and Superuser are installed by default. I'm very happy so far with the new Gbox launcher. It has a Windows 8 modern UI look about it - chunky - pleasant to work with and pleasant to look at.

When you run the firmware for the first time, you get to choose whether you want Xbmc, Gbox or regular Android launcher on startup (you can select every time and choose 'just once' or you can make it permanent by choosing 'always' when selecting). The cool thing is there's an android icon at the top of the GBox launcher that allows you to

The default Gbox launcher has a prominent XBMC launch option. I imagine this launcher will work very well with the stock IR control. I'm very happy with my Mele F10 pro right now :)

The Gbox launcher UI is clearly faster than it's predecessor - likely due to fewer animations / graphics? Either way, it's much nicer to work with.

- Enable developer mode
- Remount system RW
- Turn Hotspot mode on

Unfortunately no sound from the Mele F10-Pro headphone port yet.
It looks like this firmware is better with video decoding - somehow it seems overall faster.
Another gotcha for some is that the ability to play DVD ISO images is not yet included but planned for a future release.

Has anybody gotten NowTV (Sky online streaming) to work on DroidTV?

I have installed the new NowTV Beta app, registered a 30 day trial account for movies at www.nowtv.com. The app opens and I can sign in, but I get an "Something's gone wrong......Error: 9" when trying to play any movie. I think it might have to do with either the firmware, root, or both. I disabled root, even uninstalled superuser, but the error always shows.

It works fine playng via my PC browser, so I know unotelly is setup correctly.

Anybody wanting to give it a go, here's a link to the APK

UPDATE: Turns out Sky lock the app down to specific devices. I temporarily disabled root access and not I get an error about my device is modified and NowTV won't work.

I got it working on XBMC - I didn't know there was an apk for it.

I have some questions, and maybe AVSupply can offer some advice because I really want to see if I can get the native NowTV app to work.

1) Does the device need to be rooted?
2) How can I totally unroot the device?
3) If I totally unroot the device, how can I root the device again.
4) Would you recommend unrooting the device.

Thanks

Hi AdrianH,

I'm not familiar with the NowTV application so don't know if root is a requirement. Please send me the app link and I'll try and get it working for you

Regarding rooting the device, it's done at first boot post a firmware upgrade. To Re-root without updating the firmware, not sure, will have to do some research

I have the latest version here.

You can register a Movies 30 day trial on http://www.nowtv.com.

I have registered a trial and installed the app. The app actually runs and I have signed in. The problem is that is gives an error when playing anything. Sky say that the app will not work on rooted devices at all. I have limited knowledge on root and unroot so I am hoping you can give it a go and totally unroot the device and see if you can play anything because I *think* i unrooted my device but the error I get when trying to play a video is that the device is modified and it won't work. I even tried using OTA Rootkeeper and Rootcloak Plus to try "hide" root, but I still got errors.

Hi AdrianH,

Would hiding your root status be a better option?

Found this app -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amphoras.hidemyroot&hl=en

Hi

I actually tried that app last night, and another called Rootcloak Plus. Unfortunately NowTV still gave me an error. I will play around again tonight though and see if I can get it working. I was hoping to isolate why I get the error. Is it because device is rooted, or is it that the firmware is custom, or both. By totally unrooting, if it didn't work then at least I know its the firmware.

The other thing I figured out is that NowTV stays in memory after launching. So any changes I made regarding hiding root etc, you first need to ensure you kill the NowTV process running in memory so that it rechecks for root.

Some other guy posted he got it to work. I tried but I couldn't figure the below steps out?

This is how I got sky go working on my rooted galaxy note2. should work for most android phones. 1) use ota rootkeeper to temp unroot, this should also backup a copy of root. 2) go to superSU app and use Full uninstall ( This deletes SuperSU apk) 3) tested root using root checker it should say rooted but no SuperSU app. 5) go back to otarootkeeper and restore root. now test sky go and it should work on every channel. The only security issue here is your phone is still rooted but without superSu permissions asking you to grant root when you access rooted apps.

and then there is this

@JRT

You have missed TrickyMentalist's point, which is that if your handset is rooted, in order to work around Sky's block on rooted devices, you have to remove the SuperSU app (which controls which apps have root access) and thereby grant root access to any app that requests it by default.

Has anyone tried the latest XBMX Gotham beta?

Hi Ancalagon,

I've only ever used the XBMC version that is included in the 1.1.6 update. If you would like to experiment with a newer version, first uninstall XBMC and then install the Gotham Beta using the apk installer. If the beta is horrible, uninstall it and re-install the 1.1.6 XBMC version using the OTA application (found in applications)

Can someone tell me if this runs well on it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.rdc.android
If you use it with a keyboard and mouse, it should be able to operate like a normal desktop.

Absolutely love this on the DroidTV MX. It works pretty flawlessly as far as I can see. Keyboard + mouse + RDP and you have a Windows terminal - screen updates are nice and zippy. Makes an awesome option for a small office - Server 2012 + Terminal services + DroidTV MX boxes.

I use it as a convenient way to access and support my cloud servers, office servers and workstations.

I have managed to get cricfree.tv running very nicely in the stock Android browser. I got it close to full screen - double clicking the video window makes it fit to the height of my TV though so it's very much watchable. I have adblock plus installed and clicked two little X's (a number of times) to close the popup ad player window, other than that it was pretty straight forward. This is super cool. Going to try some other streaming services and bookmark cricfree.tv for later!

*Edit* - I'm watching project free TV in the browser too - very very happy! :)
