The Droid TV thread

Do you think my billion 5200G router might be causing this? Its 2 years old an only support wireless G

@AVSupply: Many, many thanks! I will test the new Netflix app this evening and report back.

@iru786: I am using a Billion 7300GRA wireless G router which is very similar to yours and I can watch 720p YouTube videos on the DroidTV. Have you tried the Speedtest app on the M8? I seem to get similar speeds on the DroidTV to those on my latop which is also connected wirelessly.

@AVSupply

To provide feedback on various firmwares that i tested ( Finless 18b, Finless 18 & MBox-140727). Out of all of these, 18b Finless works the best for me. Its very smooth and the sound works fine without the need for SoundAbout App. Finless 18 is good as well but it still needs SoundAbout app

The video issue and lag that i was facing is now resolved.

But one issue i still have is net access speed. On all the firmware no matter whether i am connected via Wifi or Ethernet, The download speed is not that great. Not sure what might be causing this.

I was getting close to 400kBps on news servers on my telkom 4mbps account, so full speed. That said, the software pulls over multiple pipes and it's connected via ethernet. What you can try doing is get a CPU usage overlay app that shows your CPU usage and what's using it when you download. You might have other software using resources.

Do you maybe have QOS running and haven't included the M8 in the exceptions?

@AVSupply: Once again many thanks for the download! I have just tested the Netflix 3.7.0 Build 1672 and can confirm that it does work reliably on the DroidTV MX. After viewing the diagnostic clip El Fuente 60 MP10 on US Netflix a number of times, the maximum resolution still appears to be limited to 640X480 @ 1350kbps but it does seem to be the best version of android Netflix that I have tried so far. I'm not sure why I wasn't able to get 3.6.1 or 3.6.3 running previously.

If anybody else is interested I found this video of the Netflix 3.6.3 Build 1633 (July 10 2014 version) running on a Pivos XIOS XS which is a very similar android based machine using the same dual core processor as the DroidTV MX. This shows exactly what can be expected from the current Netflix android app running on the DroidTV MX.

Here is a similar video showing the performance of the latest Hulu Plus android app running on the Pivos XIOS XS. This again shows the operation of the latest Hulu Plus app on the DroidTV MX.

Two other movie apps that I find very useful on the DroidTV MX which could possibly replace both Netflix and Hulu Plus are Show Box and Video Mix (do not require XBMC). This video shows both of them in action - skip to 5:30 for the details.

@Yotch... Yes i have done speedtest on M8 and max i get is 0.86 Mbps. My laptop & PC which are also connected wireless are getting full speed.

@Avsupply... No QOS is running. Infact the router does not have any options to set that :)

@iaywtimnbe ... I am going to install Antutu or other utility to get some info what the CPU is up to.

The issue is bugging me now .

Try setting your router to B or G only and see if it makes a difference... could be an incompatibility or some other issue at play here.

Done that was well.... No difference.

Also i tried with wired connection to eliminate Wifi Band issue... Same result.

Thanks Yotch. I also downloaded that latest Netflix apk to my phone (LG G2) and it has the same result. Max resolution is 640x480 even though the device is 1080p capable.

So local HD streaming is fine but internet has issues?

This morning I tested downloading a 45MB play store game and it came down in less than a minute on mine. I'll upload the ROM I'm running for you to test, can you suggest a mirror if Google drive doesn't work?

Thanks

Just a thought, is it possible that his unit's DNS settings are wrong?

@iru786: Do you have a 3G MiFi or a cell phone that you can use as a hotspot to connect to the M8?

@iru786: If you're still having trouble, have you tried to remove the RF receiver from the M8 and booted without it before testing the WiFi speed using the IR remote to make sure that the wireless keyboard is not causing additional problems.

Don't know if this helps ...
I am using the M8 Amlogic S802 version 0617 Firmware from Geekbuying but Finless Rom 1.7 and some others are working well. Yes, The power button on the remote only puts the unit to sleep and does not actually turn it off. I leave mine running 24/7 so not really an issue for me. Wifi works surprisingly well considering there is no external antenna. I use Oman's Build of XBMC 13.1 ( link on freaktab ) and it is very stable and plays everything .

I have the Amazon Tv as well and it is very quick and remote super responsive. The biggest problem I have with the Amazon Tv is that at least once a day maybe 2x it needs to be rebooted as the timeshift/FF/RW buttons stop working and video playback timer just stays at 0:00. XBMC also crashes on the Amazon Tv much more then any other box I have owned.

That's a valid point... try changing your channel on your router to the opposite end of the spectrum... at least 6 channels away from where it currently sits.
What alternate roms exist for the M8 - I know of finless bob's 1.7 rom at freaktab.com

He said he's having problems with ethernet as well.
