The Droid TV thread

Just seen the price drop of the droidtv....
Is the m8 worth the extra R500 now. I know it's faster and has newer Android 4.4 but what else can justify me spending the extra?
Advice is appreciated

@iru786: Sorry to hear that you are still struggling. Just look around on some of the forums to see if anybody else has encountered a similar problem.

Here are some things that one G-Box MX2 customer claims to have fixed his networking speeds. Personally I would try to switch these ethernet/WiFi settings on and off as described to see if there is any improvement. I'm not sure what he means by MX settings but I assume he is talking about the other colourful settings menu with the screen size adjustment. I would also remove all devices from the USB ports while testing.

Make sure Ethernet is checked in MX settings. Then turn OFF Wifi and Ethernet under Android settings. Go back to MX settings and click on WiFi so it is checked. Now I have 15-16Mbps.

I'm not sure whether this is the case anymore but the wired ethernet port might be using some form of ethernet to USB converter. Try to test your speeds without anything else connected to the USB ports to rule out some kind of USB driver issue.

If everything is working at it's theoretical max speed wifi is going to be up to 1.5x the wired. That's because the wired network is only 100Mbits/s and the wifi connection is 150Mbits/s (IIRC the MX2 is single channel). The wired connection is also using a USB to 10/100Mbps adapter which may slow it down some.

Expected transfer rates have been covered elsewhere. In summary writing to the flash will be slower than reading from it and max outgoing rates over the wired connection are ~8Mbytes/s. On the other hand the wired connection tends to be far more stable for streaming.

Things to check...

- Make sure you're getting a 100Mb connection to your switch or router. If there are problems with the connection (like a flaky cable or poorly seated plug) it may negotiate down to 10Mb. If you are getting a slower rate try reconnecting or replacing the cable or using a different port.

- Check for packet loss using ping with large packets and adaptive or flood mode. Even a few % loss can cause big problems if the lost packet is an ACK.

@AVSupply: Hopefully you are going to be having a busy weekend with the new DroidTV pricing! I have already posted a link in the Hardware Bargains thread.

The MX will be perfect for all your needs. Use the extra cash on that Projector screen kit I told you about :)

Thanks Yotch! :)

The Q7 has dropped by R100 as well

All I can say is WOW to the KitKat release on the Q7, it has seriously supercharged it. Will start loading them all with 4.4 after testing it properly

Thanks bro. Please keep 1 mx aside for me cos I doubt you'll have much stock left at that price.
We can confirm full order after you load the switch on the website.
I can give you a deposit to hold the mx for me if you like.

No need for a deposit, I'll put one aside now

Thanks

@silkman: That's a really good price for the DroidTV. If it's the same as mine it should work straight out of the box. I also recommend buying an air mouse/keyboard if your budget allows as this will really help with navigation/browsing etc. I personally think that the T2 air mouse is an excellent product but there are several other air mouse options if you really want a keyboard.

@iru786: I will look around a bit more tonight. You are probably getting quite frustrated but I must say that you have really got yourself up to speed very quickly over the last few days. With your skills you should be able to do a lot of interesting things with this device.

@ Yotch... Tried your suggestions. No luck

Forgot what box you had,but this oke was talking about similar problem on M8 @ post 16
(don't know if posting link is allowed, if not-Mod kindly remove then)

There @ post 20 other dude answers him, maybe first dude can say what is cause if you pm him?

Other guy was talking about this as well:"I don't know if you already done that but you can apply Zero Cache Patch from Mashup-APPLY FIX-Advanced Setting Tweak-Zero Cache (0) to minimise the buffering ... "
So seems there is such a patch..worth looking into;-)

And oh,notice post 11 here:

Started life as a c++ programmer and worked in IT development / management for 15 years. Recently i don't get to spend much time with IT with my business commitments so cant try as many things as i would like.

I am thinking may be somehow i can disable the on board wireless controller and see if i can find some drivers for external WiFi adapter. Than i can try to use the WiFi adapter i am using on my PC and do a test with it.

That's a good idea. Do you know what chipset is in your WiFi adapter? I know the Realtek based adapters work out of the box in my Egreat media player. Maybe you could just plug it in and see if there is any activity. Have you turned off all encryption?

I have dlink dw-142 & Ralink adapter. but i don't think either of them are Realtek based.

@Phrozin... Tried that patch as well. No joy. Also the zero buffer patch is for Xbmc issues. But i am having issues accessing internet content from browser, Youtube, Xbmc and other streaming apps as well.

Is there any way i can install linux OS on this and check the issue from there?

@iru786: Just tried my Realtek 8191SU adapter (very similar to one of the AVSupply LB-Link ones) on the DroidTV and it doesn't light up or show any signs of activity. It definitely doesn't appear to work out of the box unfortunately.
