The Droid TV thread

I wanted to get a hdd for my droidtv.
Makro has 3TB 3.5" on special for R1399. Is a 3.5" or 2.5 better? The 3.5" is cheaper.

3.5" normally much bigger and requires external power. 2.5" doesn't, so is easier to carry around or move

3.5" have higher capacity at a lower price

I have 3.5" usually where I do my media backups, 2.5" in my laptop bag with just my favourite and unwatched stuff

If you use a drive that does not require an external power supply, then ensure that the power supply that is powering your Android box is capable of supplying the extra power.

Thanks.
@avsupply will the droidtv be able to power any 2.5" drives?

My DroidTV MX came with a 5V 2A power supply. I personally prefer to use large flash drives to stream my content as I think that streaming from any hard drive reduces the lifespan due to heating and mechanical wear. I would probably use a powered hub if I wanted to connect a 2.5" drive for any length of time just as a precaution to isolate the drive from the DroidTV. AVSupply might be the best person to ask about this as he has sold a lot of these units.

Thanks yotch.
So it may be better to get a 3.5 " hdd cos it's already powered instead of getting a powered hub

@silkman: The only problem with the 3.5" is the size! The 2.5" drives are much smaller and neater.

Seagate and WD also have network drives like the Seagate Central and the WD Cloud which you could also look at. The 2TB models sell for ~R1500. The reviews are quite mixed so I'm not sure that they have ironed out all the problems. I don't think you can use them directly as USB drives either only via a network.

What speed ADSL line are you running? You may find that you don't download very much once you start streaming.

Thanks.

Hi silkman

Yes, the DroidTV can power 2.5" drives

Thanks AVSupply

@yotch I'm running a 1Mb line. I don't intend streaming much.
Thing is I have uncapped data at work so I have to d/l at work then transfer to my hdd that will be at the droidtv at home.
Also the maximum speed on my exchange at home is 2Mb

@silkman: I thought that all ADSL lines had automatically been upgraded to 2Mbps? Which ISP/product are you using? I do know somebody who is streaming Netflix on a 1Mbps line.

How big are the downloaded files that you are watching? You should be able to connect both the DroidTV and your laptop to your router either using cables or wirelessly and stream files directly from the hard drive inside your computer if required. A dedicated hard drive is probably the easiest to manage though.

Have you tried to stream free Hulu content from a PC web browser on your line?

Using a PC web browser what is the highest resolution at which you can watch these YouTube videos smoothly on your 1Mbps line. Just use the gear icon below the video to increase/decrease the resolution.

OH, I didn't know that all lines were upgraded.
I'm gonna watch some 20Gb stuff but most of the stuff I watch are 1.5Gb
The droid is gonna be placed next to the router so will be wired.
I hope to connect the droid to my other tv as well via an HDMI cable.
My tv installation is hopefully happening tomorrow so will ask @avsupply if I need any other cables before placing my order for the droid.
I haven't tested hulu etc.
Will test the videos later when I get home hopefully :)
Thanks man
Edit: how long normally woud a courier take to deliver from AVSupply to Jhb?

OP updated to include latest 1.2 firmware link and instructions

Check your router! Myself and a friend had to phone telkom to get them to do the upgrade. You're being billed for 2mbps regardless of whether they've upgraded you or not.

Thanks yotch.

+1 on this. I run a 3.5" 2Tb drive with my droidTV and it hides nicely behind the TV.

Can I update my droidtv ota? It has the matricom start up logo.

Have you ever updated it before? If not, probably not. You will need to flash to the latest version (1.20) manually.

I did it over the weekend but it is a PITA when doing so from a non Matricom box and took me several tries to get right.

No I've never done it before. I suppose its a matricom box as the boot logo is matricom.
