The Droid TV thread

There was an update on the MyGica sometime last week and it seem to have broken a whole lot of stuff.

Google play services, Play store, Netflix all used to work and now don't in various ways. Would anyone know what I can do to find out what update this was and how I can uninstall it? Last option would be factory settings
 
Anybody have a consistent solution for the Kodi stutter issue or am I better of going back to XBMC? Anything plays for a maximum of 10 seconds after which stuttering starts and sound goes away.

Did search the thread and found some suggestions but still not 100% sure on the solution. I know its not my network as multiple other devices (MacBook / Windows) can stream from my linux media server wired or wireless while my DroidTV MXIII 1GB 4K cannot not matter how I connect.

If theres another rom out there that fixes the problem I'm happy to go that route - as long as I can still play Netflix as well.

Sadly this did not work for me. Tried this rom as well as the previous version (MXIII GEv1 with SPMC (Custom 112k4)) and the problem persists. Even tried Plex and same thing.

Is there a way to revert this box to how it was when bought (factory reset)? Cause thats the last time it worked properly.

What version of Kodi are you trying to use, and have you made sure to correctly configure your audio output settings for your home setup?

Both KODI and SPMC latest version. I have tried multiple combinations of acceleration settings but that was under video. Under audio its set AC3 and DTS to passthrough as my amp supports it.

Audio does play perfectly long with video for the 1st 5-10 seconds. Once the stutter begins audio is completely gone.

Yes - but the problem is not confined to the new HEV format that many have trouble with. Even files that used to play perfectly now stutter.

My research has now led me to some comments in another forum (freakTab.com) that the MX3 1Gb (the 2Gb is fine) has some trouble with base releases after 11k09 so I'll be trying an earlier release to see if it helps.

But 1st I'm trying OpenElec. With the PS4 taking over NetFlix duties the lack of it in OpenElec is not longer a blocking issue for me...

PS: anyone have a working setup with the 1Gb model with Kodi/SPMC? If so what firmware are you on?

If it's an H.265 don't bother, download something else. Without hardware decoding an H.265 file will eat your CPU, we'll all need new hardware to play those.

Have you tried playing it off physical media or via LAN, wifi may be fine for other devices but playing HD stuff over wifi is a bit hit and miss.

Thats not the best of news :-(

My MediaServer is on a 100Mb lan and MX3 on a powerline network (tested with cable before but same result) - but my other devices (MacBook, Windows laptops) can play fine even over WiFi. Still just strange that it used to work (on wifi!) and now some of those same files wont play.

Anyway will still give OpenElec a go and if that does not work I have an old core2 laptop with nvidia GPU that can potentially take over if need be. Else there's the PS4 but don't feel like paying $5 pm for a PlexPass

Well OpenElec solved all my playback issues for now :-) Everything is perfectly smooth, image quality is great and audio is properly decoded by my amp.

Will mis the versatility of Android a bit but for now the box does what its supposed to do which is play video and music form my server. Lack of Netflix / Youtube is not really a problem as the PS4 client is miles better for both.

PS: OpenElec version used is Amlogic.ARM.S82 6.0.0

PPS: Large H.264 1080p files play perfectly - no idea about H.265 as I don't seem to have any.

It will be my first droid device like this and also my first streaming device.

I would have preferred to buy via AV Supply for the amazing support, but unfortunately he doesn't sell it anymore. :(

I am however a bit cautious before I proceed. I see this thread is up to page 239 already. I hope that doesn't mean there are tons of headaches and problems that will come with the device?

I have Samsung LED tv with a free HDMI connector. I will use the TV's speakers.
I would like to connect a USB HDD and use Kodi to watch content on the HDD. I am also contemplating some streaming and might even connect the HDD to my router and stream from there but I am not sure if my wifi will be fast enough (will be mostly 720p or 1080p content). And then I might want to do the occasional android gaming from time to time. No Netflix just yet.

Your thoughts?

These boxes are great for pretty much anything you want to play right now up to 1080p.

Wireless is also fine unless your router is overloaded - and with consumer routers (under about R1500) thats easier to do than you think. In my house (family of 5 with 6 mobile devices it was no go). I suggest checking your throughput while all other devices are in use 1st. You need about 8MB/s stable. Powerline adaptors are a good alternative if wifi is not up to the job.

My concern - and the reason that I would perhaps make another choice if I where in the market now - is future-proofing. H265 will eventually take over and UHD content become more common. My recent research shows it does not handle the latest codecs well. So it really depends on if you are happy with a 2 year or so lifespan.

If future-proofing is more important than current cost an entry level pc (Intel NUC or AMD A-series) is more expensive but will play everything for longer. If you own a PS4 or Xbox One already Plex may be the best option - they also play Netflix/Hulu/etc.

Hi

I'm looking at both the Mygica and the MINIX NEO X6 and couldn't decide but it seems the X6 does H265? Anyone have both and can give some advice?

Both boxes you mention are already over 2 years old and AMlogic the chip company making the CPU is going to retire support soon since they now focus on their new S905 chip. The S905 chip will also take a couple of months to iron out all the software problems and get correct Kodi support. Update the S905 chip doesn't support ac3/dts passthrough or HD Audio, only on a newer S905(B?) chip to be released in December 2015 will it support it.
