Since you plan to run Showmax you will need a TV Box that supports DRM as Showmax requires this. Other guys would know which ones support this.
 
Thanks , I am leaning towards getting a MXiii which runs android 5.1. I think I have seem somewhere that it would support DRM, otherwise I would have to get a Fire TV which would cost a lot more

It's still borked. Spent several hours working on this thing yesterday. Goes well for a bit and then just randomly freezes up and you need to yank the power to get going again. Things I tried:

1. Tried brand new PSU, no difference.
1.1 Did another factory reset just to try my luck, nada, nothing.
2. Flashed with new image - used erase all, no difference.
3. Opened up the unit and added a heatsink and paste, no difference.

I am going to try stripping the board and reflowing tonight, after that I am done. I am going to go bankrupt if I keep on wasting my hours on this thing.

BONUS QUESTION: Can anybody suggest a decent replacement? Must be able to stream from my microserver at FHD and it must be Netflix friendly.

That's annoying! Don't bin it just yet. Let me see if there are any other options available
 
See the Mygica atv585 has H.265/HEVC Support.

Anybody here that have this device and will they recommend it?
 
This may have been covered in previous posts here but there's just too many pages to sift through.... Do you guys use a VPN to stream the various addons or do you not bother? if you do, which would you recommend and what should one expect to pay?

I have unotelly setup and noticed they offer unovpn too but have read thats it slow.
Your thoughts please...
 
With a VPN your connection will be at least 10% slower as all the traffic is encrypted.

Unotelly works just fine for most "geo-restricted" content.

It's the older version of the 582 and the 582 can't even do H.265, it's got the codec sure but unless the box has hardware H.265 decoding it's not gonna work. The H.265 hardware is only just starting to come out in the newest gen of these boxes, not sure if any are available in SA yet.
 
Does anyone know if DSTV now can stream via a Raspberry Pi.

Ok, DON'T do this to cheap Chinese electronics. They used so little solder on the board, that reflowing caused several components and a microchip to detach and fall off. I am not spending time putting this mess back together.

For now it's back to the raspi for openElec. As a replacement I am considering the MXiii or the HPH NT-V8, or the leader at the moment the FireTv with kodi sideloaded.
 
I am seriously shopping around for a good TV box. Looking at:

Has anybody heard of these products. Specs look really good and it has everything I need.

I am just very nervous buying a product that I do not know and has no local support.

I need:

Bluetooth
Wireless
Optical Out
Must be able to attach NTFS 2 or even 3 Tb external drive with movies etc.

My kid wants to play Playstore games on it. He could probably just cast his tablet via this box to the tv screen?

It is currently in JHG, but I should get it hopefully the end of the week or next week. All I can say about the Zidoo X6 is that from everything I read and watched and asked on the forum, this seems to be the box to be had!

Let me break it down for you:
1. KODI - Bunch of @rseholes who do not want to include the correct fix for the RK3386 chip in their releases. The Guys from Zidoo re-wrote the code to include this fix. Kodi forced them to remove the Kodi branded name. (I am still fuming about this!)
2. The Box (as far as it comes to Android boxes) is well supported by a competent team.
3. You will read some negative comments on the Zidoo forums, but if you can read past kids trying to get their way, you will find them working actively to get an Android box experience to their customers as good as it gets.
4. The Zidoo team is young and small enough to still listen to their clients.

The Specs: Nothing wrong there. Gets a bit hot if pushed, but overall a nicely balanced package.
DSTV NOW: Hold your breath, I will test it out (first thing!), but I believe the company to have registered their hardware and DRM licences, but I will only be able to tell once I get the product in my hands.

Price: $109 (free shipping from Geekbuying) is not bad. You could get a further $9 discount if you compare Alixpress...and tell them :)

Shipping takes a good while :)

I'm currently waiting for a MXQ Pro (Amlogic S905) to arrive on an Aliexpress order.
Seeing that this thread is already on page 250+ Are there any tips on the best add-ons and repositories (seems it changes every month)?
I've installed Kodi on a Linux box in the mean time, just to get a feel for it and have managed to install Phoenix and Exodus, which seems to work well. Is there anything you guys can suggest to watch live sports (upcoming T20 Cricket and Super Rugby)? I've looked at Sportsdevil, but couldn't really get it going nicely.
 
Opinions on the MXQ-4K RK3229 Quad Core Android TV Box? Want to use it for Netflix and obviously Kodi. Also some Plex. What's the performance like?
