The Droid TV thread

Tried it once - full screen video ads for games lasting 15 sec every time you switch channel - uninstalled !

is anyone able to airplay from their apple device to their MX box? this is the last functionality that I need. if yes, can you describe your setup?

What is the best way to share files over a network to Kodi (running on MXQ Pro). I've tried SMB via Windows 7 and Ubuntu, NFS via Ubuntu and UPNP via Windows 7 and Ubuntu (running Kodi as a DLNA host). None have been very successful.

SMB from the Windows 7 machine worked the best between the bunch, but still not 100%. What I've found is that the share must come from a password protected account on the host machine - a PITA if you're trying to run a headless setup (Windows installing updates, restarting the machine and halting on a logon screen). Music playback (320kbps MP3) also had a weird dip / skip ever 2 - 5 seconds.
SMB on Ubuntu kept on requesting username & password on Kodi and never accepted any of the login details I entered.

I tried setting up a NFS on Ubuntu using some browser based configuration tool (Netwin or something), but couldn't get it working.

I created a Kodi account for it to log into the PC with and it started worked fine, endless issues before that. Also switching to a cable rather than wifi solved any dips and "item can't be found' errors on my MG582

Cool, I'll give it a bash and see. Thanks

This is all very confusing =)
Last year I got a MyGica MG582 from AVSupply which have been working pretty well (relatively speaking)..
I want to move this device to another room and replace it with something newer - preferably sticking to a similar interface.
Now it seems like availability of the MyGica devices are erm.. limited locally. I saw the ATV582 on Takelot but dont know how it compares.
Seems everyone is raving about the Amazon Fire TV as an option with Kodi sideloaded.
Oh what to do?

If you don't mind a bit of a wait, you can order the MXQ Pro (Amlogic S905 chipset) from Aliexpress for around US$40 and free shipping. I've had mine now for just under a month and the thing is great. Basic Android (Lollipop) with full access to Google Playstore.
Download Kodi, install your add-ons and enjoy. With the Rand at a bit stronger stand at the moment you're likely to get away for just over R600 including customs. I ordered the OTT version thinking that it had Bluetooth - it doesn't, but if you order a QuickPlay version (I've been told) it does support Bluetooth 4.0.

Aah thanks! The MXQ looks pretty good. Is it worth paying more for the Quick Play version?
Interesting the price scale:

What options would you recommend for a semi-decent remote to go with it. Nothing serious but I prefer having the full KB option like the KR40 dual side wireless

I don't know if it is worth the price difference. I wanted to use a PS3 BT keyboard (with build-in mouse) with mine and couldn't because of the lack of BT, but other than that and the Gigabit lan, there isn't any difference.

I only use a wireless mouse to interact with my MXQ (I have a Logitech Harmony remote to switch it on and off) and it works fine to just point and click type on the on-screen keyboard.

Regarding the no-name device - I can live with it - at least it is on Lollipop already, but I doubt if there will be much updates. It seems like the development of the SOC's and boxes is going so fast, that by the time there is a new Android version, there is a new chipset out and everybody loses interest in the old ones. And yeah $27.50 come on

What is wrong with the included remote?

The included remote is IR which requires a line of sight to the receiver. I dont like having AV equipment visible.
Apart from that it's super handy having a keyboard on the remote .
