The Droid TV thread

Not as far as I know - I don't have a Dstv subscription. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Well I've gone for the MX Plus II. Apparently those have the necessary DRM/whatever needed for those apps to work.

I'll be able to confirm that when I get mine (hopefully) sometime in the next couple weeks. For R500 and change, seemed a good deal.

go with the Mygica. The mygica comes rooted out of the box and updated regularly with patches.

Is there a noticeable difference in streaming performance between these TV boxes (MyGica ATV582 / MXQ Android TV box / MX4 Quad Core Android TV Box) and using a laptop? I have an old laptop and I am wondering whether I won't get better performance from that than from a TV box.

I've had no wifi issues whatsoever, obviously you won't get the same streaming performance as with ethernet, but 720 files run smoothly.
Howzit, so I am looking at picking one up tomorrow, the place I get it from is R300 more expensive but not worries about that but would you take this over and apple TV 3

I also switched from a laptop to the MyGica, the performance of the tv box is much better.

The Apple TV 3 is (like all apple products) VERY restricted and will have to be "jailbroken" to even attempt to get the functionality running. The Droid box option's beauty lies in the fact that you can run Kodi on it - this gives you the ability to to access all the content and not the box itself. The box is basically just the computer running the program (one of many you can install - because you have full Playstore access).

I bought a Remix Mini the other day- got the 16GB version.
http://www.jide.com/mini

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this. It uses the Remix OS based on Android 5.1

It looks very nice - very similar to the MXQ Pro "Quick Play" units (Bluetooth 4.0 & Gigabit LAN support) with just a different chipset (Allwinner vs Amlogic S905). Did you go for the 8/1 or 16/2 (storage/memory) option? Do you know if it comes with Playstore support?
Because that would determine if you'll be able to download Kodi or not.

When we bought, the sales lady told both of us (on separate queries) that it's the 8/1 box, but we both (myself and a work colleague) ended up with 16/2 variants (it ended up as a combined order). I'm not sure if it was an error in shipping the wrong units or a sales rep not clued up, but we aren't complaining!

There is (was?) full Playstore support. Once you reached the latest update (as of this posting) the Playstore and supporting apps are uninstalled, but you are given the option to reinstall manually- with instructions on how to, from within the OS, which is a bit odd- which I have done, and everything works 100% perfectly.

All the apps I've downloaded (which aren't a lot though) work perfectly.
I mostly use Kodi, but I also stream via Google Play Music, have installed Plex client which also works very well.

I'm very happy with the unit and its performance, my thoughts were more to the point of what others would think about it hardware wise (and the custom take on the OS)- so maybe I shouldn't have led with a question, or phrased it differently.

Thus is the one I am looking at, it it the same one you have

This looks like the exact one I have (the OTT version) . Just make sure of their claim about Bluetooth 4.0 capabilities. From what I've seen these units doesn't come with BT and only 10/100 ethernet. The Quick Play units (which look the same, they just have a Quick Play logo on the top) comes with Bluetooth 4.0 and 100/1000 ethernet.

So this one then

Does it stream well, heard WiFi a bit crap. Assume easy to jail break and run kodi otb

The specs on the two units look identical except for the remix software on the second one. There's no need to jailbreak these, Kodi will be available from the Playstore and might possibly be Pre-installed.
The one I'm talking about is this one. I'm not saying the one you're looking at doesn't have the functionality, just make sure.

Cool stuff thanks, not being able to easily get roku and not an apple fan due to the ecosystem shut down guess this is the best option

These are much more flexible than Roku and Apple

Suggestions where I can get a wireless keyboard in JHB for a MXQ S805?

I use the Rii i25 mini, from takealot. Airmouse/keyboard combo (and some programmable IR buttons if your box supports IR)- but it's tiny, so not sure if you're looking for a full sized keyboard or whatnot.

Is there a tv box which plays Netflix in 720p or 1080p? On some reviews I read that the Mygica ATV 582 /585 only plays Netflix in 480p. I also read that you can't play BBC iPlayer on these boxes as they do not support Flash?
