Tons better - more responsive. I haven't done kodi on android for some time - I think my last box was a quad core, but I'm enjoying the Pi more. I haven't tried, but there's an android distro for the Pi now too. I'm just enjoying retro gaming and Kodi way more since using the Pi. Definitely get the Pi 3 if you go that route.

How much is the landed/delivered cost of a Pi3?
 
On an impulse I went and ordered one of those Pi3 "starter kits". Took delivery of it a little earlier today.

First time for me delving into the world of the Pi. :p

Let see how this thing performs.
 
Any black Friday deals for Pi3? . Want to give away my Pi B to a friend, but want a replacement before that

RetropPi is awesome - allows you to install modules using a GUI, comes with a ton of emulators and arcade game ports as well as Kodi, works with USB and wireless gaming controllers (add USB Bluetooth if you like), but if you just want movies then Vanilla Kodi plus Exodus add-on is perfect.

I'm interested mainly in loading it with emulators. I've heard that it emulates the vintage consoles pretty well.

Not sure how user-friendly the install process is for an Pi noob such as myself, but I'll do the necessary reading on it, and hopefully I'll be good to go.

Just a word of warning, use a download manager for the retropie image - it timed out a bunch of times at 100mb for me till I did. There is a torrent on the forum too.

I'm sorted as far as a download manager is concerned. I've been using Internet Download Manager for years.
 
Thanks for the prices Marsports. Apart from Kodi what other intersting things can I do with a Pi3?
It's basically the brains that you can apply many different os and hardware to?
 
It's pretty much a complete PC though not heavily powerful - punches way above its weight in the price range tho :)
you can create all sorts of cool things with it - of course you can often buy the same ready made "things" cheaper, but it's not nearly as fun that way.

I'm a fan of the pirate radio and magic mirror. Transmitting FM from the Pi is incredibly easy. I'd like to add a 3G shield and hide it in the car for Internet tunes on the go.

Also, the Pi makes an awesome thin client - just boot into VNC / RDP and connect to your windows terminal services or whatever remote enviro - dirt cheap!

I am looking at purchasing a MXQ 4K.
My question is why are the price discrepancies so vast?
From R699 on Bid or Buy, up to R1195 at local store.
 
Is this the best Android TV Box to buy or should I go for the Mi Box? Not many app options on Samsung Tizen. :(

Edit: My requirement is for 4k streaming.

Local store? I'm seeing 639 + 100 postage on bid or buy. If you get it at your local store, what do they offer in terms of warranty? What about the Bid or Buy seller?

BOB gives 30 day, local store says 12 month.
seems a huge price difference for same unit.

30 day warranty... urgh...
What they're charging for is the fact that they take the knock for failures, which do happen. It's an odds game. They are importers and they have to carry the cost of returns, if it's even worth their while.
 
whats up guys, finally managed to pick up a PC/Android controller from AV Supply. Picked up the Tronsmart Controller for R349, which ill use on my Media Player and PC. Good reduction in price for it, so happy with that. Awesome service again from AV Supply

Avoid any MXQ product, they have overheating issues and no firmware support from the manufacturer.
In a similar price range you can import a device, can be shipped with DHL, EMS or airmail($39) and already has Marshmallow firmware instead of KitKat that the MXQ 4K uses.
Netflix sound is also in sync which is a problem on the MXQ 4K.
The MXQ 4K also has no bluetooth support.
