The Droid TV thread

Email from Mediabox:
"We do run Kitkat now and will be upgrading to 5.1+ in the second half of next year to provide an even better lean back environment (Update will take place via OTA update). We are currently also the only product on the market offering out the box capability & support for DSTV, Showmax, Netflix and Amazon Prime (Launching soon).

Specs wise, we use 1 GB of RAM and an MT8600 series processor.

We also run SPMC as our standard variant of KODI.

We have produced the Mediabox so everyone can have a usable and more importantly supported device to watch VOD and live TV from. We have relationships with Google, DSTV and Showmax to ensure future compatibility and an even better user experience down the line. We are GMS approved and pay for our codecs so VPU actually does the decoding of video not the processor."

My assumption is they are also Icasa approved as they selling unit on Loot. Their website also initially stated they were busy with certification but now they up and running

I'm strongly considering ordering the Xiaomi mi box from the US. Does anyone have any experience with it? Would it run the supersport Android app?

Ah crap. I forgot about the stupid different ports we have to the US - I'll probably just pop it into an adapter.

Has anybody bought from androidtvboxes.co.za yet?

I'm looking at this unit https://androidtvboxes.co.za/store/...16GB-Android-6-0-TV-Box/p/63550177/category=0

Any comments on the device?
That's a popular device with lots of firmware support on Freaktab. New s912 chipset. Price is not bad for local stock when you factor in shipping waiting time and customs . However you should mail them to confirm if it's compatible with Dst Now if you want that to work . For other apps and Kodi it's a future proof box due to Android 6

Brilliant news, im just hoping somebody has purchased from them before and can vouch for the site as I'm always a little wary of just parting with my cash.

This will be used purely as a kodi box so the rest is all a bonus.

They have taken the name from popular UK and EU reseller. No idea if there's affiliation. I buy from overseas with PayPal due to buyer protection.

The V6 is still the faster model with a better CPU(2x), GPU(3x) for high-end gaming and running Android + Linux, 1.6-1.8Ghz Quad Core A17 CPU.
The N8 is a budget model but with the latest hardware codec support like 10-bit h264, vc1, vp9 and MM firmware, recommended more for streaming and casual gaming, 1.5Ghz Quad-Core A7 CPU.

The NT-N8 with v1.2 firmware & V6 with v1.8a firmware run Showmax from 4 Dec correctly now.
The NT-N8 is still available on Amazon(with an airmouse), from UK sellers & Aliexpress(the listing just expired, but should be updated again in a day or so).

There is a new RK3399 chipset tv box that will be released early next year based on the same CPU, GPU and other hardware that this device has https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1771382379/firefly-rk3399-six-core-64-bit-high-performance-pl will be quite interesting.
Happy with my NT-V6B :) glad i bought it from Roux a while back on here.

Bloody lost the otg cable again lol so heading out again to find a replacement cable. Need to update to v1.8 and see how that goes

Average price for Europlug Mi Box International is $79 TO $89 from Gearbest or Geek buying. Fast courier cost $10 to $30. Then customs and handling which is R450 on average. To avoid the hassle and get locally overnight that price is reasonable. Locals must stop acting like we pay $69 no shipping fees overnight delivery and always no customs duty.

Having trouble flasing unit. Installed driver but Android tool just wont pick it up.

Held the recovery pin in and laptop sees someting but says it doesn't recognise unit.

Any advice xmbcfan?

There is a tool from Rockchip for upgrading the firmware on these units from an SD card so you don't actually need an OTG cable.

https://bitbucket.org/T-Firefly/fir...4b/RKTools/windows/SD_Firmware_Tool_v1.45.rar

It's all in Chinese, but you can change the language to English in the config.ini file.

Interesting. Last chat i had with xbmcfan was that due to the version of Android, flashing via SD card is no longer available. Think it was KitKat was the last version able to do this.

That's all good and well. But there are many places charge twice the price that you can buy from China (including shipping and taxes). If I am wanting to spend R2500 on a device, why pay an extra R2500 for the "local convenience"? Is a local warranty and faster shipping worth that much?

A good example of a total rip off is wantitall. If you want to see the worsted cases of rip off SA then jump onto their site.

On the other hand watch out for the scum who just do drop shipping and charge you double the Chinese price for the "pleasure" of paying into a local bank account. You are still liable for the taxes.

I am referring to the specific cost of R1750 for local stock of Mi box. It's reasonable. Sure there are places like Want trying to charge R2000 for R500 box but there must be a balance. When pricing is slightly inflated we cannot compare direct pricing to USA or China. Just like consoles or pc hardware that's often far cheaper abroad. We often find people on various forums who want to pay 1 to 1 prices without the inconvenience of importing themselves. Often shipping and duty if you in a hurry can cost more than the actual device.

It could be that it has a problem with his all-inclusive boot image.

But the tool doesn't seem to have a problem with Wasser's MarshMallow firmware though. Some people are even running this entirely from an SD card.
