The Drum Thread

Video of a (very) talented young drummer tracking the drums for a friend of mine's band's upcoming release:

Keep in mind this guy is only 16 years old! He makes blast beats look easy... :p

Mother of god. When I was 16 I couldn't even spell 'blast beats'.

Holy crap

I love this because its not just a "im super fast" video, its got a really nice rhythm feel to it!!

some questions:

anyone used things like superior drummer to interface with their electronic kits?
Any recommendations?

Yeah - speed is useless if its sloppy. You need a high degree of precision if you want to play fast and make it sound good though...

Also, speed is fine, and tight speed is awesome, but great drummers need to play with feeling.

It also depends on the style of music. Blast beats add to the atmosphere of black- and death metal, so in that sense the drummers are playing with "feeling".

Pretty sick :D

Look at 2:31'ish. Daauyym.

So....

started my lessons, going to george voros.
The technique is a little different, and i think its going to take me quite some time to get used to it. But , there are definite advantages and i think he is definitely the right instructor for me.

Glad i started now, because already i have bad habits that need to be changed....sigh

Lessons are getting better, im looking at getting myself a double bass pedal so i can practice the "hop" heel /toe technique properly with both feet.

Looking at the mapex falcon double bass pedals, reviews seem very positive and the feel is quite good, anyone else tried them or can make any recommendations?

Been jamming quite a bit since I moved, I know have more space for all my instruments. I am going to start recording some tracks again soon.

So tempted to get a acoustic kit again now that I have the space.

man, i would kill to have an acoustic kit at home.
Even the top end rolands dont quite have that acoustic feel to it...
although, im now using superior drummer with my kit, and for recording etc its just awesome

danny carey's awesome. stephen perkins of janes addiction is a really good drummer, haven't heard their latest stuff but he was great on their early records.

Got my pedals last night.
Havent played much, but changed the beaters to the heavier weights, kept standard cam and dual chain on.

Will give the belt and direct drive a try on the weekend. So far so good, pedals feel very very light and the motion is extremely smooth. The toe stop is also removable, which is nice :) and the plate is quite long allowing for playing all the way up and down.

So far so good

So, after moving house, putting drums and putting drums in storage for over 2 years, i am back!

Anyone have recommendations for a drum mat to protect my wooden floors from the pedals and help deaden the pedal noise?

I was looking at the roland tdm10 mat, but i cannot source it

Take a look at the Mapex drum mat. You should be able to pick it up from a Paul Bothners or Marshall Music.

Can't believe I didn't see this thread though. I've been playing drums for 8 years now, and 7 of those years have been spent playing live shows and sitting in studios. I currently play for a band called Betray The Emissary, and I've got a few drum covers up on Youtube.

Currently playing on a Pearl Export which came as a 6-piece (extra 10" tom) but I use it as a 4-piece with the 12" tom and 16" floor tom. I'm endorsed by Zildjian so I've got full Zildjian A Customs all round, and I use the Pearl Maple Free Floating snare and the Pearl Demon Drive double pedal.

Also picked up a Roland TD-9 electric kit which is useful for home practice without pissing off the neighbours. Hope to hear from the other drummers here!
