Cape Town - M-Net and Franz Marx Films have decided not to renew the contract for Egoli .

This means that, in honouring the current contract, the final episode of Egoli will be broadcast on March 31 2010.

"Egoli has been a crown jewel on the M-Net schedule for many years," said M-Net's Director of General Entertainment: South Africa, Theo Erasmus.

"Changing viewership patterns and preferences influenced our decision. Because of the rapidly changing South African television landscape no television programme can exist in this diverse environment forever.

"It was a difficult decision, as we know that Egoli has such a loyal fan base.

Taking a break

Egoli made history when it was launched on M-Net way back in the early 90s. It was South Africa's first local soap.

"I am going to take some time to rest and rejuvenate before even thinking about new productions," said Franz Marx, creator of Egoli - Place of Gold, who sees the end of the contract as an opportunity for a much-needed break.

"The past 18 years with M-Net have been exciting, but all good things must inevitably come to an end."

"It has been a privilege to be in Egoli from the start," said Hennie Smit who plays Bertie.

Michelle Beling, who plays Candy says that she's had a wonderful experience on the show including "good memories, the laughs, the tears".

Egoli hunk Chris Linford says being on the show was an "honour" adding: "I will miss my colleagues."

Sad day for all the old tannies out there. Never watched a full episode of Egoli, so not going to miss it.

I can also add that I REALLY have never watched those episodes for longer than a 10 minutes stretch. It even then it was a REAL stretch. I watched Bold and the Beautiful for a while in the early 90s (while still in high school) but that's about as far as it goes. Maybe the reason is that we never had MNET and our open time reception was crap. When my parents got DSTV I was already out of the house.

Well done for posting it at exactly 18:00 ... the time Egoli starts. :D

I watched it when I was still living at home. You can get into it if you want to.

Ok, so I did watch a few episodes in the past, but the last one I watched was a couple of years ago, 8 / 9 years or so. I think what kept Egoli alive was open time and since the fall away of open time I predicted that Egoli won't last long.

Because in essence Egoli is what all soaps are ... CRAP.

If nobody had to pay for a soap-opera, soap-operas would have been dead long ago.

and they would have to use flashlights as eskom is having powercuts nationwide.

I just love the tip-toeing around the real reason for the cancellation on their Website:

"“Egoli has been a crown jewel on the M-Net schedule for many years, but because of the rapidly changing South African television landscape no television programme can exist in this diverse environment forever. It was a difficult decision, as we know that Egoli has such a loyal fan base, but the magic of M-Net will continue with an array of fresh, new local shows which will lure even more viewers to the channel in future.

Translation:

"Because the black viewers do not watch Egoli, you wil get more variations of Isidingo and be damn right thankful for it!"

Where other shows overseas gets cancelled for not having enough viewers, over here it is because the viewers suddenly became politically unacceptable.

All the jokes aside, one has to look at exactly why this happened. The main reason is because Open-Time got canned. After that, advertising revenue stopped and now a lot of people will be out of a job, not just the actors.

It's a sad thing though. Even if you never liked Egoli, one has to admit it is one of the better SA soapies.
