The F-35 thread

F35 looking good at RIAT, it seems the "it can't fly, not very manoeuvrable" critics have all disappeared this year.

A more interesting topic will be the CAS fly off happening between the A10 and the F35 at the moment. The completely fair and representative of real world conditions one.....

Why not include a Sopwith Camel as well?

The Apple is nothing like the Orange.

It's only the ignorant that would think an F35 is going to do the exact same job of an A10 in the same way (or vice versa). When last did you see a CAS comparison between an F15 and an F16 or between a B2 and an F22? It's an idiotic idea that should have been kicked into touch.

By the way, I say that even though it's becoming apparent the A10 lost, from the wails of unfairness being reported in some of the aviation press.

Do you think an A10 would manage to come out as the best airframe by a 20:1 ratio at the Red Flag excercises?

I was there. It flew well.

I must add that the Rafale really does some amazing turns, but can't put too much into that as they probably stripped her down for the demo.

Oh and here is a pic of the B-2 flyover.

The USAF air force think a two day exercise is a suitable fly off with no simulation of real world conditions or threat environments.

I know nothing about these things, but all it seems to be doing is climbing very steeply? A missile should be faster than that.

Missiles would have to find it first ;)

Though it was probably done because (a) it's at an air show and (b) to show all the muppets who claimed it was too big, too heavy, underpowered, not very agile etc what muppets they really are...

They reduced the payload when competing with the A-10 so they seem to think so.

Seriously, how difficult is it to realise how stupid it is to compare a 1200mph 5th gen stealth fighter bomber to a 400mph outdated plane with a single mission capability of ground attack?

The whole saga is just idiotic and it's no wonder the Air Force isn't taking it seriously.

So why not include all airframes that currently carry out CAS? It's an act of sheer stupidity to everyone except those that think war is boring.com is a real news site...

F-35 Engine Upgrade Would Enable Directed Energy Weapons

Pratt & Whitney is refining its proposed upgrade path for the F135 Joint Strike Fighter engine to include increased power and thermal management system (PTMS) capability following feedback on its initially proposed upgrade package from the F-35 Joint Program Office.

Additional power and thermal management capability will enable the use of directed energy weapons and other advanced offensive and defensive systems and, if approved, would feature in an upgrade package called Growth Option 2.0 (GO2). Pratt & Whitney, which would roll PTMS into a suite of compressor and turbine enhancements originally proposed in the first upgrade package, G01, says the complete upgrade could be available within four years of getting the official go-ahead.

That is the entire problem with the test it is not representative of anything at all.

Exactly, because trying to prove the quality of the apple juice you get from an orange is always going to be a nonsense. This whole comparison wasn't required and the Air Force didn't want it either. It was the pro-A10 mafia who were hoping to get it to show how good the A10 was at a specific task when being compared to the newest all rounder fighter bomber the air force now has.
