The fine wine thread

You can pick these screw caps up from Woolies for R50, they're very tasty.

Some of my favourite new wines:

Badsberg Pinotage
Allesverloren Tinta Borraca
Brampton Sauvignon Blanc
Raka Pinotage

I've been for wine tastings to Alto a couple of times (3 at least). Loved it every time. It's a tad expensive though in the shops.

Luckily here in the Cape we can get good wines for R40 per bottle less (at least) than you poor sods in Gauteng.

I need help! SO is coming over for dinner tonight and I have no idea what white wine to buy. Preferably not Durbanville Hills because I overheard a conversation between him and a winemaking student and they were talking down about the wine. I had a look at Haute Cabrière Chardonnay/Pinot Noir , but it's R90 a bottle and I'm on a student budget. :(

I rarely drink wine and when I do it's usually red wine, so I don't know white wines at all. I don't much care for the brand or anything, as long as I just don't look like a completely uncultured cretin.

Alternatively, does anyone know who in Stellenbosch sells Hidden Valley's wines? I don't feel like driving out to the farm itself. (edit: nvm, their site says they're out of stock anyway)

Do you know what type of wine he prefers? Lighter, fruitier wine? Heavier more wooded wine?

Which wines does he normally drink?

I have absolutely no idea. I drank some of his last weekend but I neglected to check the label. I wouldn't describe it as light and fruity, though. I know that's not much help, but I'm predominantly a beer drinker. I very seldomly drink wine so I don't know it at all.

I think maybe I should just tell him to bring a bottle of wine and I'll take care of dinner. I think I might be in way over my head here. :p

See that makes this very hard to advise on as if he likes the heavier stuff then you can start looking at Chardonnay, but if he preferes the lighter white cultivars he might like a chenin blanc / Sauvignon Blanc depending on if he likes a drier wine or not. Gewurztraminer is also something that is seen more and more in South Africa and could be nice if you are looking for something slightly different.

Here is a list of most of the grape varietals that are grown in the Cape area:

Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc - R50

Nice wine.

He probably won't mind what you get. Go for a sauvignon blanc to be safe.

Hmm, in that case I think I'll grab one of both types. Maybe a Fat Bastard Chardonnay and Chenin/Sauvignon something else. It's not like it will go to waste here anyway.

Thanks for the advice!

If you can still find one and although quite pricey the Niels Verburg Shiraz 2004 very good

Edit: I see the 2007 being sold. About R600 a bottle
