Ford Mustang Mach 1 confirmed for South Africa

If you were considering purchasing a Ford Mustang, hold your wild horses because the Mach 1 special edition is heading our way, Ford South Africa has confirmed. Although it doesn’t have much more power than the standard GT, the Mach 1 ships with some really cool kit and there is a certain element of exclusivity given that only 90 of them will ever reach our shores.

However, Ford SA has yet to confirm the pricing, or the timing of its introduction for that matter.

The Mach 1 is powered by a slightly uptuned version of Ford’s normally aspirated 5-litre V8, which produces 338 kW and 529 Nm. That’s a match for the Bullitt special edition that was sold here a while back, and for the record it’s a 7 kW gain over the regular GT version, while torque remains unchanged.

Ford has tinkered with the suspension too, with the Mach 1 receiving stiffer front springs and sway bars, a rear subframe with stiffer bushings, rear toe-link from the Shelby GT 500 and MagneRide adaptive suspension. Braking power is enhanced by an upgraded brake booster.

Drive modes include a Track Mode and customers can also look forward to Track Apps and Launch Control.

As the world’s best-selling sports car, the Ford Mustang range in South Africa will soon be bolstered by a very special and exclusive model – the Mach 1 Fastback coupé, which Ford says is the pinnacle of Mustang 5.0-litre V8 style and performance. The Ford Mustang Mach 1 limited edition has landed in South Africa, sporting a number of unique dynamic and aerodynamic features as well as a small performance upgrade. Said to be the most track-focused Mustang to date, the Mach 1 is priced at R1 182 100 in manual transmission guise and R1 203 800 as an auto. This represents a premium of R159 600 over the equivalent 5,0 GT auto model.

What do Mustang fans get for this money? For starters, the 5,0-litre normally aspirated V8 engine has been modified to produce 338 kW at 7 250 r/min and 529 N.m at 4 900 r/min, which is a 7 kW gain over the regular GT and a match for the Bullitt edition that was available previously. Ford claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4,4 seconds for the Mach 1 auto model and 4,8 seconds for the manual, although the lack of a blower means these numbers are only attainable at sea level.

Unlike the 5,0 GT, which is now only sold with an automatic gearbox, Mustang Mach 1 buyers get to choose between manual and automatic transmissions. The manual gearbox is derived from the Shelby GT350 and features rev-matching technology and a “robust” twin-disc clutch. The auto model uses Ford’s 10-speed self-shifter, but features an upgraded torque converter and model-specific calibration.

The Ford Mustang has proven popular since its arrival in South Africa, but if you couldn’t get your hands on the Bullitt for that ultimate pony car experience, then this special track-focused Mach 1 is your next best bet.

Under the bonnet is the 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine, but in Mach 1 iteration power has been bumped to 338 kW and 529 Nm. The additional power comes from a high-performance open air induction system, intake manifold and 87mm throttle bodies with low-pressure port fuel injection and high-pressure direct fuel injection.

As far as performance goes, the new Ford Mustang Mach 1 is good for a 0-100 in 4.4 seconds for the auto, but straight-line performance is just one of its party pieces. The car also features increased downforce for high-speed stability and enhanced corner carving ability. The manual gearbox Mach 1 is fractionally slower at 4.8 seconds to 100 kph.

All Mustang models come standard with Ford Protect, comprising a four-year/120 000km comprehensive warranty, three-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance and five-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty. A six-year/90 000km service plan is included, with 15 000km service intervals.

The Ford Mustang Mach 1 has arrived in South Africa! Since the South African introduction of the Ford Mustang back in 2016, the iconic sports car has been a huge success. Nearly 3 500 Mustangs have been sold in South Africa, giving Ford the lion’s share of the sports car market. In fact, the Mustang’s success is global and it’s been the best-selling sports car in the world for 6 years on the trot!

In 2019, Ford launched the Mustang Bullitt in South Africa which pays homage to the 1968 Mustang GT Fastback which was famously driven by Steve McQueen in the movie Bullitt. Only 55 Mustang Bullitts came to South Africa and all of them were quickly snapped up by local enthusiasts.

Now, in 2021, Ford is once again conjuring up the past by reviving the Mustang Mach 1 nameplate. The Mach 1 dates back to 1969 when it first went on sale.

All 90 units are finished in Fighter Jet Grey paint finish which is enhanced with satin black and reflective orange stripes and orange brake calipers. The Mustang Mach 1 automatic carries a price tag of R1 203 800 while the manual Mustang Mach 1 is priced at R1 182 100.

There aren’t many options left when it comes to a good old fashioned normally aspirated V8 engine. Quite a few with a single or twin turbo, for now at least, but when it comes to sports cars there’s only the Lexus RCF and LC 500, and in this case the iconic Ford Mustang in Mach 1 guise paying homage to the original 1969 classic. Only 90 have been brought into the country all in metallic Fighter Jet Grey and if you’re not one of the lucky ones to have it registered in your name, sorry, they’ve all been spoken for.

Recently released in SA, the Ford Mustang Mach 1 has been given two series of performance enhancements as well as some revisions to the suspension by Schropp Tuning, in an attempt to make it a more competitive sports coupe.

For those not familiar with the special edition Ford Mustang Mach 1, of which all 90 units have already been sold out here in South Africa, think of it as a halfway point between the GT and GT350. Under the bonnet sits the brands naturally aspirated Coyote 5,0-litre V8 with a power output of 338 kW and 529 N.m of torque. This can be sent to the wheels via a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission (not too different to the Bullitt edition).

Giving the muscle car more edge through the corners are the subframes and toe-link components borrowed from the left-hand drive-only Shelby GT350 and GT500. Furthermore, a unique 19-inch alloy wheel, with a 0,5-inch increase on the rear track and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, are fitted to the axle to enhance grip levels. This chassis is complemented by an electronically-controlled “MagneRide 2” adjustable suspension and stiffer front springs and anti-roll bars that are all tuned specifically for the Ford Mustang Mach 1.

Ford South Africa gave local Mustang fans a big surprise when they launched the new Mac 1 in the country. The pony car is one of the world's rarest machines and a true legend in the Mustang's history. Over the almost 60 years that the Mustang has been in existence, the Mach 1 only appeared on three occasions, with the current model the third.

The car is as special as they come, with the South African market only receiving an allocation of 90 units. And what came as little surprise, all 90 units were sold before the car was officially launched. Of the 90, 15 are fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, with the remaining units featuring a recalibrated version of Ford's acclaimed 10-speed automatic transmission.

The manual models carry a price tag of R1 182 100, while the auto retails for R1 203 800. If Ford SA were to sell each car for the said retail price, and without any discounts coming into play, the manual should see the automaker generate R17 731 500 from the 15 models. The automatic models have a total income of R102 323 000. In total, the 2021 Mustang Mach 1 is set to generate R120 054 500 for the Blue Oval in SA.
