Ford exec admits brand has ‘absolutely discussed’ Ranger Raptor V8

The head of Ford Australia says the Blue Oval brand has “absolutely discussed” the possibility of a V8-powered version of the Ranger Raptor bakkie.

Speaking to motoring.com.au, Ford Australia president Kay Hart stopped short of confirming such a vehicle would make production, following rumours suggesting an independent engineering firm Down Under would be involved in the project.

 
Ford Performance promises next-gen Ranger Raptor will be even ‘better'

A Ford Performance executive promises the new Ranger Raptor “will be better”, confirming the Blue Oval brand is already working on the next-generation version of the off-roader.

Speaking to CarsGuide, Ford Performance programme manager Justin Capicchiano said the next Ranger Raptor would move the nameplate “forwards”.

Ford South Africa offered Cars.co.za and other media representatives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help its employees assemble 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines for the Ranger and Everest at the company's Struandale engine facility in Port Elizabeth. What could possibly go wrong?

A lot. An awful lot could go wrong, especially considering that, before we embarked on this outing, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) informed us that the engines we'd help assemble were, like all the other powerplants produced on Struandale's production line, were destined for the Ford factory in Silverton, Pretoria and would duly find their way into the engine bays of South African-built Rangers and Everests, destined for both the local and export markets. There were no second chances, no dummy lines to practice on. Every mistake would cost FMCSA money, but fortunately, the factory had put in extra shifts to make provision for any hiccups. No pressure then.


 
South African tuner hands Ford Ranger Raptor bakkie some extra oomph!

The folks over at RGMotorsport have released a tuning package for the Ford Ranger Raptor, handing the South African-built off-road bakkie some extra power and torque.

The Randburg-based tuner says its Stage 1 upgrade for the Ranger Raptor’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine improves its peak power from the stock 157 kW to a healthier 180 kW. According to the company, the tweaked engine’s power exceeds the stock value from 2 400 to 4 000 r/min, thanks to the use of a Unichip X with EasyConnect harness.

Peak torque, meanwhile, has been hiked from the standard 500 N.m to 590 N.m, the latter delivered at just 1 500 r/min. RGM claims that at 2 000 r/min, where the stock engine makes its peak twisting force, the tuned version generates 548 N.m.

Ford Ranger Raptor boosted to 180kW by RG Motorsport

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again - Ford’s Ranger Raptor is an incredibly capable off-roader that was born to tackle rough roads at high speeds. But its power to weight ratio just doesn’t do it justice.

Sure, its 2-litre twin-turbodiesel engine produces an impressive-for-its-size 157kW and 500Nm, but that’s up against a mammoth kerb weight of 2338kg. That, to lend some perspective, is a good 150 kilos more than the Wildtrak weighs.

The easiest solution, given the expenses and complications involved in “adding lightness” as Lotus founder Colin Chapman might have suggested, is extracting more power from Ford’s 2-litre engine. And here, Joburg-based tuner RG Motorsport has a solution that claims “substantial improvements" in peak power and torque as well as more user-friendly delivery curves.

The Stage One upgrade sees peak power increase from 157kW to 180kW (both at 3000rpm), as measured on RGM's 4WD dyno, while torque is up from 500Nm to 590Nm, at 1500 revs. Furthermore, at 2000rpm, where the standard motor peaks, there’s still 548 newtons available, according to RG Motorsport, while torque tapers off in a "more progressive manner” between 3000 and 4000rpm.

The upgrade is priced at R33 000, and includes a six-month or 20 000km warranty.

Ranger V8 Cancelled

Mustang powered Raptor undone by economy.

The ultimate Ranger might never happen. Reports from Down Under suggest that Ford fans, keenly anticipating the Ranger Raptor V8, are unlikely to ever see it happen.

In January it was revealed that due to positive customer inquiries, Ford was considering the development of a V8-powered version of its Ranger Raptor. The modified T6 platform could definitely handle the extra power, which was lacking in highway driving – due to the Raptor’s additional weight, blunting the performance of its diesel engine.

Ford wished to use an adapted version of its Mustang V8 engine in the Raptor. Premcar was selected as the engineering consultancy to execute this new Ranger Raptor V8 project.

Using the 5-litre V8 petrol engine, powering Ford’s Mustang GT, Ranger bakkie followers could expect a very potent double-cab. Unfortunately, the project has stalled.

With Ford having posted massive global losses in Q1, many future product developments have been shelved. Some of these projects will be revived as revenues rise again, but the niche projects are basically done for.

 
Next-gen Ford Ranger Raptor to gain twin-turbo V6 petrol option as well?

A fresh report out of Australia claims the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor will be offered with a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine.

Whether such a powerplant would be offered outside of North America, though, remains to be seen.

According to CarAdvice, the Blue Oval brand will ditch the current Raptor’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel mill for a version of the twin-turbo 3,0-litre V6 petrol unit used in the Explorer ST in North America. In the Explorer ST, the V6 generates a healthy 298 kW and 563 N.m, delivered to all four corners via a ten-speed automatic transmission.

 
New Ford Ranger Raptor to be built in three engine flavours – report

Rumours about the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor keep coming. The latest? Well, an Australian publication claims the Raptor will be built in three engine flavours.

Yes, according to CarExpert.com.au’s sources, the next-gen Ranger Raptor has been confirmed for North America (the Ford Performance variant is currently not offered in that market), where it will be powered by the Blue Oval brand’s 242 kW/542 N.m second-generation “Nano” turbocharged 2,7-litre EcoBoost V6 petrol mill.

What about markets like Australia and South Africa? Well, the publication claims the current model’s bi-turbo 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel heart will be carried over, with unchanged peak outputs of 157 kW and 500 N.m. This version will again feature a ten-speed automatic transmission and selectable four-wheel drive.

 
River beds, sand and rocks: We take the Ford Ranger Raptor on a 1200km adventure

Two things, though, that I would change – one that’s easy enough to address and the other a setting feature. The standard tow bar drop plate isn’t adjustable, which meant the trailer was being towed at an angle, while the drop plate also affects the departure angle when crawling over rocky sections. An easy enough fix with a custom made tow bar.

The second is that when you switch the vehicle off, the setting automatically defaults to normal, which isn’t a deal breaker, but when you’ve walked an obstacle and you’re hot and sweaty and preparing to tackle it, checking whether it’s still in grass/gravel/snow, mud/sand or rock mode isn’t top of mind.

We averaged 13.2l/100km over 1 285km, most of it towing a loaded trailer and much of it in deep, soft sand with tyres deflated to 0.9 bar which, given the conditions, isn’t bad at all.

As a first outing, it was a tough introduction for the Ford Raptor, and it came out with flying colours.

Ford Ranger Raptor owners will be quick to point out just how capable this bakkie is. If it is venturing into the unknown or scaling a mountain to get to that lookout point, the Raptor is up for the challenge. The bi-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine is always willing and able to take up a challenge, never backing down with its 157kW and 500Nm.

The 10-speed automatic gearbox goes a long way in keeping engine revolutions down, but it's incredibly punchy when 'Baja' mode is activated, and you engage the next gear via the steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The Ranger Raptor is a truly good bakkie and a good indication of what is expected of a proper recreational vehicle.

Long-term update: Ford Ranger Raptor hits the open road

Summary

Having previously done this long trip in my Toyota Fortuner, I thought I had found the ultimate roadtrip vehicle but the Raptor has changed that. It’s not only great on the open highway and off-road, but as a daily drive, this big double cab does it all and is not damaging to the pocket in terms of fuel consumption.

The retail price though at R875 700 might be a different story for our current market.

Ford Ranger Raptor handed huge lift, chunky tyres and extra oomph!

The folks over at delta4x4 have turned their attention to the Ford Ranger Raptor, hiking the bakkie’s ride height, adding chunky tyres and extracting extra power.

A tuning package sees the bi-turbo 2,0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine’s peak outputs increased from the stock 157 kW and 500 N.m to around 188 kW and 650 N.m.

The lift kit, meanwhile, adds some 100 mm of extra ground clearance, with new springs and spacers hiking the bakkie by a further 40 mm.

SA-built Ford Ranger Raptor bakkie switches standard-fit tyre brand

Continental Tyre South Africa says the locally built Ford Ranger Raptor is now fitted as standard with General Grabber AT3 all-terrain rubber.

When we tested the Ranger Raptor back in July 2019, we noted the bakkie rode on BFGoodrich tyres.

Now, however, the Ranger Raptor – which is built at Ford’s Silverton plant and sold both locally and in various export markets – has switched to the aforementioned General Grabber rubber, produced at the Continental Tyre SA plant in Port Elizabeth.

“We are delighted that our General Grabber AT3 has been selected for 100-percent fitment on the Ford Ranger Raptor,” said JJ Dowling, general manager for manufacturing at Continental Tyre SA.

“Matching the bespoke suspension and performance characteristics of the Ranger Raptor to the correct tyre is a task that the Ford engineers take very seriously. Accordingly, our tyres were subjected to a punishing range of tests before being selected as the new OE tyre fitted on all Ranger Raptors produced at Ford’s Silverton assembly plant for domestic sales and exports markets around the world.”

3500km adventure: If you are going to hell, best you go in a Ford Ranger Raptor

When we pulled into the driveway in Pretoria we had covered 3583km, spent just over 75 hours behind the wheel and consumption evened out at 14.9l/100km. More importantly, though, we had seen some of the most beautiful and desolate places in our country, overcame serious difficulties, met magnificent people and cleansed body and soul which was the intention from the start.

The Raptor? All I can say is hell, yes.

This is what Ford had in mind when they designed it. Not just to look good, but to load it up, take it off the tar, experience far-off places in comfort and practicality and come back not having skipped a beat.
