Next-gen Ford Ranger Raptor to launch in RHD with petrol V6 – report

A fresh report out of Australia claims the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor will launch with a petrol-flavoured V6 engine, including for right-hand-drive markets.

According to CarExpert.com.au, a camouflaged right-hand-drive Ranger Raptor prototype recently spotted Down Under sounded just like the Bronco being tested alongside it.

The Bronco in question, of course, draws its urge from a turbocharged 2,7-litre V6 petrol engine, which delivers 231 kW and 540 N.m to all four corners via a ten-speed automatic transmission. And it’s this six-cylinder engine the publication claims will be offered in the new Ranger Raptor, likely in both right- and left-hand drive.

Spy Shots: 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor

We get our first look at a prototype for the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor wearing its production body, and running with a 2023 Bronco Warthog!

A new Ford Ranger is expected to be revealed in 2023 and this week Ford South Africa announced a $1-billion investment to upgrade its Silverton manufacturing plant where the new Ranger and the next-generation Volkswagen Amarok will be built.

A new Ranger Raptor is also due in 2023 and a right-hand-drive prototype has now been spied undergoing testing with a 2.7-litre V6 petrol engine under the bonnet! This engine develops 231 kW and 540 Nm and is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Six months with the Ford Ranger Raptor, the master of all terrains

The Raptor’s 2-litre twin-turbo diesel engine is certainly up to the job of high speed off-roading and in most other situations, including steeper hills, it won’t leave you wanting much. That said, this is a heavy vehicle - being a good 143kg bulkier than the Wildtrak model - and as such it could use a bit more power for things like overtaking on the open road.

Hopefully, then, those rumours about the next-generation Ranger Raptor getting a V6 diesel turn out to be true.

As for fuel economy, our Raptor drank 9.5 litres per 100km on a 750km freeway trip to the coast, while its 3500km Richtersveld 4x4 adventure saw it average just under 15 l/100km.

All in all, though, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with our black long-term Raptor and we were certainly sad to see it go. It really is a champion of all terrains.

It’s a wrap for our long-term Ford Ranger Raptor

It’s easy to live with on a daily basis, will gladly carry five adults, tow without any hassle, has people eyeing you jealously and the deal clincher for me is that you can do some very serious 4x4ing without having to spend money to make any modifications.

Ford reveals Ranger Raptor X edition in Australia

Ford’s Australian division has whipped the covers off the new special edition Ranger Raptor X. Although there are no performance mods to speak of, the numerous aesthetic enhancements are sure to make it turn even more heads in the parking lot.

It starts with what Ford refers to as OTT stripes – and yes, that does stand for ‘over the top’. These matt black ‘carbon twill texture’ graphics with red pinstripe borders are applied to the bonnet, roof, tailgate and the sides of the vehicle.

A matching matt black finish has been applied to the grille, door handles, rear bumper cover and fender vents, while the 17-inch alloy wheels now boast an ‘Asphalt Black Matt’ finish. Raptor X buyers can also look forward to an extended leg sports bar, inherited from the Ranger FX4, as well as red front tow hooks and a black Ford tailgate logo.

Inside Ford has decorated the Raptor’s cabin with red contrast stitching on the dashboard and steering wheel (replacing the regular Raptor’s blue stitching), while Black Alley and Hydrographic accents have been applied throughout.

Ford unleashes Ranger Raptor X

Could a meaner-looking special version of the Ranger Raptor – the flagship of Ford's popular bakkie range – be on the cards for the South African market? Judging by the Ranger Raptor X, which will be released in the Australian market in the near future, it cannot be ruled out!

The current Ranger (T6) has been on the local market for about a decade and camouflaged pre-production units of its F150-inspired successor have already been spotted; this leads us to believe the showroom version of the newcomer is likely to be revealed within the next 12 months. Local production of the new model will probably commence at some point during 2022.

So, as the current-gen Ranger nears the end of its product lifecycle, Ford has looked to capitalise on strong demand for uniquely-styled and kitted-out leisure double-cabs.

The barrage of special Rangers from Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) began with the Ranger Thunder (based on the Ranger Wildtrak) and then, towards the end of last year, the firm followed it up with the Ranger XL Sport (based on the Ranger XL), which catered for the high- and low ends of the Ranger’s customer base respectively.

Next Ford Ranger Raptor to offer twin-turbo V6 petrol

It has previously been rumoured that the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor will offer a choice between diesel and petrol power, depending on the market in question. But now we have it on good authority that the latter option will be one of Ford’s brawniest engines.

Ford Authority says it has learned from inside sources that the petrol-powered Raptor will receive Ford’s 3-litre EcoBoost V6 motor, paired with the company’s 10-speed automatic gearbox. The engine is currently available in some of Ford’s high-end SUVs, including the Explorer, where it produces up to 298 kW in the ST variant. It was previously thought that the Raptor would be offered with Ford’s older 2.7-litre V6 EcoBoost unit.

The move to petrol power comes as a result of the new Ranger Raptor being developed as a more global vehicle, and it will be offered in the United States for the first time alongside its bigger F-150 Raptor sibling.

According to CarsGuide, diesel-biased markets such as Australia (and by implication, South Africa too) will receive a 3-litre V6 turbopetrol engine option that should produce in the region of 185 kW and 600 N.m. It is currently not known whether these right-hand drive markets will get the aforementioned petrol engine as an option.

Ford Ranger Raptor V6 engine details

Bigger engine for Ford's super bakkie.

The rumour mill keeps grinding away, regarding Ford’s next-generation Raptor.

Sources close to FordAuthority, have allegedly confirmed the configuration for Ford's Ranger Raptor 2.0 – and no, it won’t have a four-cylinder engine, anymore.

The new Ranger Raptor will be rolling a 3-litre EcoBoost V6, combusting petrol. This engine architecture does duty in the current Explorer ST.

Ford’s most potent tune of the 3-litre EcoBoost V6 makes some very impressive numbers, especially for a bakkie. If product planners at the American brand decided to use the 3-litre EcoBoost V6 without any upgrades, it should boost 298 kW and 563 Nm of torque.

Power nearly doubles over the current 2-litre bi-turbodiesel’s 157 kW, whilst the torque gain is less impressive, at 12%.

The most significant improvement in Range Raptor’s driveability should be its acceleration and overtaking performance at highway speeds – both of which, are less than impressive, with the current diesel Raptor.

Follow the Raptor: Ford's fastest bakkie to be the official route vehicle for SACCS

• The Raptor bakkie has a starting price of R910 200.

• The bakkie will be used for race route plotting and marking by SACCS champion and route director Evan Hutchison.

• Rounds 4 and 5 of the SACCS championship, take place in the Free State, on 1 and 2 October 2021.

The Ford Ranger Raptor bakkie will be used as the official route vehicle for the second half of the 2021 SA Cross Country Series.

While the original Raptor is already formidable in stock trim, the route vehicle has been fitted with components like Position Sensitive Damping shock absorbers manufactured by FOX, bigger front and rear brakes, as well as improvements to its high-strength low-alloy steel chassis.

The robust 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine good for 157kW and 500Nm remains the power unit, and its 10-speed automatic transmission has also been improved to hold gears longer and downshift more aggressively.

SVI announces bullet-resistant Ford Ranger Raptor: SA pricing

Following the introduction of its armoured package for the Ford Ranger line-up earlier this year, Johannesburg-based armoured vehicle specialist SVI has announced a bullet-resistant package for the Raptor variant.

The Ford Ranger Raptor with B4 armoured specification can be ordered from Ford dealers at a price of R454 271, which means that clients are looking at a total cost of around R1.37 million once the price of the vehicle is factored in.

Touted as an ideal anti-hijack solution, this SVI package offers B4 bullet-resistant protection against handguns up to a .44 Magnum, and it also offers protection against brick throwing and other hand-held projectiles. The package consists of Kevlar sheets for the vehicle’s body as well as 18-21mm armoured glass.

This ‘discreet’ protective package does however come with a weight penalty of 280kg, which will have an impact on performance and fuel efficiency.

As suspension changes were deemed unnecessary, the SVI Ford Ranger Raptor retains its impressive Fox rear suspension set-up that makes it ideal for high-speed off-roading. However, due to its lower payload, Ford has not approved SVI’s B6 assault rifle protection package for the Raptor model.

How do you make Ford's Raptor bakkie even tougher? Have it armoured, of course

• SVI Engineering is renowned for fitting vehicles with world-class armoured protection.

• In a first for the company, they fitted a Ford Ranger Raptor with its B4 Armoured Protection kit.

• On the Ranger Raptor, the B4 kit costs R454 271, excluding VAT.

SVI Engineering, a specialist manufacturer of armoured products, added another feather to its cap when it delivered an armoured Ford Ranger Raptor. SVI Engineering is no stranger to fitting Ranger bakkies with its armoured kits, but this is the first Ford-approved Raptor to have gone through the process.

According to SVI Engineering, the Ranger Raptor is fitted with its B4 Armoured specification kit that offers bullet-resistant protection against handguns up to a .44 Magnum. This anti-hijack solution offers further protection against brick-throwing and other hand-held projectiles.

SVI Engineering says: "The protection consists of 18-21mm armoured glass combined with Kevlar sheets for the body. It is discreet and, at only 280kg on the Ranger double cab, also lightweight with minimal impact on vehicle acceleration, fuel consumption, and dynamic performance."

Ford creates 'very gay' Ranger Raptor after troll's homophobic comment

Ford of Germany has come up with the perfect response to a social media troll who referred to the Performance Blue colour option on the Ranger Raptor as being “very gay”. This inspired Ford to create what it calls the “Very Gay Raptor”, painted in gold dust and rainbow colours.

Ford initially created an animation of the vehicle for social media, but then the company decided to build a real version, which hit the road as part of the 2021 ColognePride event this past weekend.

The “Very Gay” Ford Ranger Raptor was wrapped by Alphafoil, which spent 60 hours and 30 square metres of foil in creating its unique gold dust and rainbow graphics.

And this is not the first time that Ford has created a rainbow bakkie - back in 1998 the German division converted a Ford Ka into a bakkie and gave it a similar livery.

Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition revealed for South Africa with extra kit

Two years after its market launch, the Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition has been revealed exclusively for the South African market. Making this a unique model is an array of additional standard features and a sportier interior design.

You’ll be able to finish your Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition in Sea Grey, Frozen White, Blue Lightning and Agate Black paint finishes. This will be contrasted by twin matte black racing stripes edged with red contrast lines to the bonnet, roof, lower body sides, rear wings and tailgate to further emphasise the performance bakkie’s high-performance character.

This look is further accentuated by red front tow hooks together with matte black flared wheel arches, front and rear bumpers, door handles and a signature Ford-embossed grille. The integrated black sports hoop derived from the Ranger Wildtrak has been included to the design as well to add further flair to the muscular appearance.
