2023 Ford Ranger Raptor Revealed And It's Coming To America

You can expect a similar power plant to the Bronco Raptor when the truck hits our shores in 2023

The Ford Ranger Raptor is here… almost! The company has revealed all the delicious specs early this morning, for the new truck that is debuting for the global market soon. Until now, The Blue Oval was staying mum on whether or not us Americans would be getting the Ranger Raptor.

Well, if Ford CEO Jim Farley is to be a trusted source, we are certainly in luck.

That’s right folks, she’s coming next year. Exact specs for our truck have not been announced yet, but a Ford rep told us they would be coming “early next year.”

In the meantime we can speculate as to what is coming our way. The Australian Ranger Raptor is powered by a twin-turbo 3-liter V6 that is pumping out 392 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Power gets to the ground through a 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s a similar setup to what is found in the Bronco Raptor.

The Ford Ranger Raptor Reveals A Sneak Peek At The New Volkswagen Amarok

The shared platforms between the Ranger and Amarok could point to a tougher midsize truck from VW

The 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor is almost here, and it’s looking a lot like the Ranger’s stablemate, the Ford Everest. There’s another new model that’ll possibly share the Ranger’s appearance and platform. Not the Ford Maverick, but the new Volkswagen Amarok. VW is keeping a lid on the upcoming Amarok’s specs but has revealed early impressions of its midsize truck.

With this next generation, the Amarok will be a joint Ford and VW venture. We can now compare the early designs of the Amarok to those of the Ranger Raptor to get a sneak peek at the final design of the upcoming truck:

I’ll admit I was skeptical of the Ford and VW pairing, because I was afraid it would change the Amarok into something unrecognizable. The design that VW has teased is a big departure from the clean lines and simple bodywork of the previous truck. The new Amarok is bigger than before at about 5.35 meters, which is the same length as the current Ranger. Unless the new Ranger grew significantly, the two trucks are probably close in size.

Flying freestyle in Lesotho: We tackled near impossible trails in a Ford Ranger Raptor SE

Talk, as they say, is cheap but money buys the whiskey. Which is exactly what Ford did when they put together an adventure into Lesotho with their Ranger Raptor that would cover some very treacherous and difficult terrain.

Manufacturers often trumpet their 4x4 ability, but on a track under controlled conditions with instructors to hold your hand around every corner and obstacle is very different to going “freestyle” over a level five route.

And no, this would not be Sani Pass, I’ve driven that many times and apart from the final bend towards the lodge it’s really not that difficult.

Leaving the Silverton plant early, six Raptors including my driving partner and I in our long term SE crossed the border at Caledonspoort, drove towards Katze Dam and then headed off to Semonkong via a “road” used by Basotho ponies and donkeys.

We have driven the Ford Ranger Raptor at speed on tar and dirt roads where its prowess with its specially designed Fox suspension, chassis and 35-inch tyres have proved it to be in a class of its own, but now we would be doing low range 4x4 with diff locks engaged in clay mud and over boulders and mountains.

Why the Ford Ranger Raptor is one of the best luxury cars you can buy

What’s more, I’m a first-time father and when I had the Raptor in my possession it was my job to drop our daughter off at school. She's only four months old and is, as one would expect, my everything. Due to the Raptor’s ability to remove all the external elements that would normally stress me out when driving with the little one and the fact that it comes standard with ISOFIX, makes the school run effortless.

Now, I didn’t set out looking for this angle to the story, instead I just drove the Raptor every day and very quickly picked up on all the elements. I noticed how other road users gave me space, how safe I felt driving in rain and on poor roads, many a time together. I would arrive at my destination in a calm state of mind, relaxed and at ease with the world, and that is what I expect from a luxury vehicle.

While a Rolls-Royce and Bentley do offer impeccable levels of luxury I doubt piloting either one, daily, on our roads with our rod users will de-stress you as much as a vehicle like the Ford Ranger Raptor will.

REVIEW | Ford's Ranger Raptor SE excels in many areas, but it begs for more power

After six months, the Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition sees its time with the Wheels24 test team come to an end.

The bakkie saw plenty of adventures, but gave good insights into the ownership experience.

Ford's all-new Ranger will arrive in South Africa later this year.

In summary

The Ford Ranger SE is a bakkie worthy of plenty of praise. It does everything differently and runs with confidence very few bakkies can match. And rightly so, it's been headlining the current Ranger line-up as one of the best bakkies in South Africa. Is it without fault? Definitely not, but these are in the minority and the positives more than make up for any shortcomings.

Ford's bi-turbo engine does an adequate job in the other vehicles in the Blue Oval's local portfolio, but one can't help but feel that the Raptor is left wanting for more… power. What the engine offers is good on paper, but a Raptor needs more. More of everything. Luckily, Ford will be addressing the power issue with the new Ranger Raptor in the form of a 292kW 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine in the near future.

The Ford Raptor SE retails for R979 650 and comes standard with a four-year or 120 000km warranty. A six-year or 90 000km service plan is optionally available.
