Haha, very true. If it does not have a Raptor kit then it's a Fraud. You need Raptor and Guns'n'Posers CD in the radio.

Has anyone driven or own a Ranger with auto transmission? I might buy a Ranger in auto but have no idea how their auto transmissions are.

My dad/boss has a 2015 3.2 XLT 4x4 Double Cab Auto. Just had its 45k service and zero gearbox issues. He has done several 4x4 holidays including West Coast and Sani Pass in sub zero morning cold start conditions.

The auto does suffer from some pull off lag compared to my manual. My old man installed a "pedal booster" which basically "shortened the throttle cable" (it's actually drive by wire) to get rid of the lag - even the slightest pedal prod gives instant turbo boost pressure and pull away - much better!

Avoid <2013 Auto's as they suffered from a leaking coolant hose from the gearbox which was part of a very hush hush recall campaign - it would rub through and then dump all engine coolant and fry both the engine and gearbox, requiring a replacement. late 2013 onwards models had re-routed coolant piping to address this.

Thanks for the info. How are the gear changes tho? Smooth? Im just concerned that the box is not smooth and that it keeps changing gears in traffic and unable to decide which gear it should be in etc.

Having driven it many times, I have not noticed anything negative. Kickdown is swift and smooth and it obviously has the manual overide on the gear level (tip forward or back).

The only reason I went for manual with both of my Ranger's is that the Auto will not kick down at 140kph+. In my manual, I can drop to 5th and overtake quicker than the Auto which will hold on to 6th even if you mash the throttle.

Thanks man, keen to test drive one.

Ok so I went to have a look at the Rangers and their prices. I think I will go for the Ranger XL as thr XLT is not on special.

Now I really want PDC, cruise control and the radio the XLT comes out with but the sales guy said the radio will not be possible and the others will have to be fitted with aftermarket products.

Will these aftermarket products look out of place (controls) etc? Will they work properly or is it not a good idea to do it like that? And why would the radio not be possible?

I prefer the black bumpers and grill over the chrome the XLT comes out with.

Unfortunately you missed out on killer XLT deals a few months ago (R400k for a 2.2 XLT). SYNC 3 only comes in XLT and Wildtrak models and is really a great feature especially now that it comes with built in navigation as well. I have also seen guys spray their chrome bumpers black to make them look like a wildtrak...

After market stuff will work, but from my experience, not as well as factory kit and switch gear for cruise control will stick out.

I see Wildtrak is on special for R500k but that is still a hell of a lot more than they want for the XL.

Are there any that are lower? Or can you lower the suspension?

I like the Ranger and I want a 4x4 but don't like a car that has the ride height of the empire state. I want to be able to easily slide in and out.

4x4 will always ride high unless you have air suspension like a Land Rover or Jeep.

Only the base workhorses in the Ranger stable have normal height suspension. Toyota used to make a cab and a half low rider Hilux on the previous gen, but it looked extra stupid like it always missed leg day...
