Get ready for big fuel price hike: report

South African motorists should prepare themselves for a fuel hike of as much as 70 cents, thanks to a continuing rise in oil prices and weaker rand, BusinessDay reports.

According to Econometrix economist Laura Campbell, speaking to the paper, the country is currently seeing an under-recovery of 70 cents per litre, which “must come through in October”.

Mike Schussler, economist at Economists.co.za, pegged the October increase at 50c/l, the report said.

In August, the fuel price reached new record highs to R13.55 a litre (inland) – and if the projected increases are accurate, motorists can expect to pay R14.05-R14.25 per litre in October.

An expected increase will largely come as a result of the price of brent crude oil jumping to a high of $115 a barrel this week on the back of increasing tensions in Syria.

Adding to the fuel price woes, unrest in the mining sector and the initiation of South Africa’s “strike season” has pushed the rand into weaker territory, hitting a low of R10.50 to the dollar – the lowest point since before the global economic crisis in 2008.

The rand was trading at R10.33 in morning trade on Thursday (29 August).

Crisis... I'm going to start having problems being able to get to work ffs.
 
Good time to start having a serious discussion with my employer about working from home... at least some of the days.

This driving to client everyday thing is BS anyway, so I can sit here in a horrible cubicle with crap internet connection when I could've just dialed in from home on my perfectly working ADSL line.

Time is getting closer to let the maid go too and start cleaning up after my own arse, something that should be much easier too if I'm not stuck in traffic for two to three bloody hours a day.
 
Cross your fingers, fuel price may drop

JOHANNESBURG - Motorists will know on Friday whether petrol prices will increase or decrease but economists predict it will drop by six cents a litre.

Earlier this month the expectation was that the price would fall by 35 cents a litre but economists say this is not possible, amid a continuing rise in the global oil price, the weakness of the Rand and tension in Syria.

If the price increases this would mean the fuel price would have risen by 18 percent since January and be up to 12.2 percent since the 1st of July.

Efficient Group Economist Dawie Roodt said: “Just about every day the likelihood that the petrol price is going to fall gets smaller. The petrol price may still come down, but probably less than 6 cents and certainly not the 35 cents per litre expected earlier this month.”

AND there is another Bio fuels tax that our wonderful government is about to dump on the motorists as well.

We are in a "Let them eat cake" situation with this goddam government.

They will continue to tax the motorist as the majority of their voters are too thick to realise that they are being bled dry by these sods who scream around the country in their luxury blue light brigade cars, and they never have to fork out a cent for their own fuel!!! :mad:

And then people are still suggesting to instead of etolls, they add the cost in to the fuel levy! Sorry joburg... pay your own debt lol petrol is duur!

Um excuse me, Joburg pays for most of the rest of the countries roads developments, it's about time they gave something back :mad:
Without the economic powerhouse that Joburg is, you would not even have any roads. :p
And SANRAL have plans to toll the rest of the country as well, so unless you join us in the fight here, you will soon be tolled as well.

We pay for our own roads, finance your own damn freeways.... :D
 
The fuel levy was already increased around April. So why haven't they started paying the debt off yet?

See I'm a local boy... My roads are built and paid for by the municipality mostly... and the bit of SANRAL roads I use I pay for with my measly portion of the fuel levy :D
 
South African's love their cars too much to cut down. Every day I see thousands of cars with new number plates. We are already half way through the "Cx xx xx GP" band in Guateng. I feel like a beggar with my Zxx xxx GP plate. :(

Interestingly though, for every Rand the petrol price increases, your cost of commuting increases by:

5L/100km car: 5c/km
7L/100km car: 7c/km
10L/100km car: 10c/km

And for every 10 000km per year, your annual fuel bill increases by:

5L/100km: R500
7L/100km: R700
10L/100km: R1000

So buying a more fuel efficient car is probably a silly idea unless you were going to get a new car anyway.
 
Aint I just glad my scooter only has a 5 liter tank. This is becoming a joke!!!

Thanks for that.. I feel the same. I watch people around me getting rid of their decent older cars that are doing 9 or 10l/100km to get a new 5 or 6l/100km vehicle. They end up spending more every month because they've had to spend more on the vehicle finance...

Me on the other hand, I got rid of my nice Merc that did 8l/100km and was a joy to drive, to a much older Mazda Drifter 4x4 that does 11l/100km. The big difference is that my insurance halved, my repayments halved... and my petrol bill went up by about R800 per month... and I know have a very very practical vehicle.

How do you think I feel with my Sxx xxx GP car? :p

At least its gets ~6.45l/100km currently :D
