The Fuel Price Hike Thread

Hey guys, just for those interested, we're working on transparent membrane bags that you fill different compartments with different types of algae. The chemistry and filtration mechanisms are quite complex, but for an end user all you simply do is put this bag on a rack or put as many of them as you can fit on your house roof, plug a hose pipe in one end and out comes biobutanol. Butanol is ideal because it can be put straight into a normal petrol engine without any modifications. The specific enthalpy of combustion (how much "boom" per gram) is lower for butanol than octane by about 30%, but if you can make it for free and it is just for a road car and not a sports car, then all is good.

We're also toying with the idea of getting rid of the ICE (internal combustion engine) completely and only have the fuel react electrochemically and not through combustion. For Electric cars, this will put your efficiency up to about 60% of the fuel, where as now with ICEs you only get around 22% efficiency (there's this thing in thermodynamics called the Carnot Efficiency principal). The cool thing for this design means that just about any hydrocarbon can be used as fuel. Diesel, alcohols, alkyls etc. Anything that burns pretty much can be used in this engine. The problem is we need to outfit every car on the road with a big beefy electric motor to replace the ICE in the bonnet.

I would love you forever if you can mange that!!!

Expected drop in fuel may bring relief for consumers

The drop in the retail price of petrol of between 20 and 25 cents a litre expected to be announced by the Central Energy Fund today will bring some relief to deeply indebted consumers said Neil Roets CEO of Debt Rescue, one of the largest debt counselling companies in South Africa.

Roets said the expected 12 cents a litre reduction in the diesel price will equally welcomed as both petrol and diesel prices have a major impact on the costs of all goods and services in the country.

Roets said while the predicted price reduction was to be welcomed, consumers should not see this as an opportunity to stack up even more debt.

"What we hope for is that the retail sector takes cognisance of this reduction and that it will be reflected in lower prices for all goods and services once the price decrease has worked its way through the system."

According to the NCR's Consumer Credit Market Report (CCMR), the total outstanding gross debtor's book is sitting at R1.47 trillion. This represents money owed by consumers in the form of mortgages, vehicle finance, credit cards, store cards, personal loans, short term loans, pension and insurance-backed loans.

But the rand weakend R10 to the dolla... so I think 20c drop now... next month 50c increase...

How is 20c considered relief? That is R12 on a 60 litre tank. They spin it like we should be thankful for that.

Always before Christmas! Then in the new year they hit you hard!
Indeed, I am still surprised how stupid and gullible the general public is though.

I am still pursuing the electric car. I am just out of funding at the moment, I am in talks with some people and friends to chip in.

Petrol price increases - Tuesday, 3 December

The price of petrol and diesel will increase from midnight on Tuesday.

The price of both grades of petrol would increase by 17 cents a litre and diesel by 10.12 cents a litre, the energy department said on Friday.

"The fuel price changes include the annual margins adjustment, changes in the Basic Fuel Price and the decrease in the slate levy," it said in a statement.

The annual adjustment to the petrol margins had increased and this had affected the petrol price, the department said.

"The decrease in prices of the international petroleum products was not substantial enough to offset the effect of the volatile exchange rate on the fuel price," it said.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin would increase by 16.50 cents a litre.

The single maximum national retail price would increase by 22 cents a litre for illuminating paraffin.

The maximum retail price for LP Gas would increase by 18 cents a kilogram.

Massive petrol price hike expected

CAPE TOWN - Economists have forecast a massive petrol price hike in January in the region of between 30 and 40 cents a litre.

At the beginning of December, both grades of petrol increased by 17 cents a litre and diesel by 10 cents a litre.

Economist Dawie Roodt says a weakened Rand is largely to blame for yet another increase.

“The petrol price is likely to go up for between 30 and 40 cents per litre next month. The main reason for that has to do with the recent weakness of the Rand, but also the international oil price has been a little bit on the high side.”

I swear.. one of these days I'm going to buy a 50000l tank and just fill it with diesel... I reckon I'll save a boat load of money over the long term.

Ahhh fsck em. What are they going to blame this one on? Increased transport costs because of e-tolls.

Petrol price hike to dampen festive cheer

Cape Town - While South African's will be counting down the hours to celebrate the New Year, many will also have to fork out more for petrol.

Efficient Group economist Dawie Roodt told Fin24 that he expected the petrol price to increase by between 30c and 49c a litre (c/l) in January.

This is largely due to the increase in international oil prices, he said, with about a third of the increase owing to a weakness in the rand...

AA predicts petrol price hike

CAPE TOWN – The Automobile Association (AA) says a spike in the price of fuel is expected next month.

Prices show a possible increase of between 28 and 32 cents per litre for petrol, 15 cents for diesel and 9 cents for illuminating paraffin.

The AA's Graeme Scala says the increase is largely due to the poor rand/dollar exchange rate, which has deteriorated over the last few weeks.

“This is despite international petroleum prices that have declined over the same period. More than likely we’ll see an increase in February, depending on the rand/dollar exchange rate.”

Funny how it goes from generation to generation.... My dad used to say he could drive around the world with a shilling and I tell my son I could drive from Cape Town to Bloem with R200....

Guess he will be telling his kids that he never know why we used gas in the first place....

Rand is pulling back strongly today but doubt whether it will be enough to get us to breakeven, hopefully it will be enough to at least bring the increase down a little...

More pain at the pump, Marcus warns

JOHANNESBURG – South Africans can expect a steep increase in the February petrol price, Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus warned on Wednesday.

Speaking at the announcement of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decision on interest rates this afternoon, she said motorists can expect a hike “in excess of 30 cents per litre”.

The governor warned that the struggling rand meant yet another petrol price rise should be expected.

“In December and January, the domestic petrol price increased by a cumulative 55 cent per litre. A further significant increase, in excess of 30 cents per litre, can be expected in February.”

Marcus said this would also increase pressure on the inflation rate going forward, especially if the current patterns continue.

During the same conference, she announced the repo rate would increase by 50 basis points, citing inflation and deficits as the primary driver.
