And to think it will be outdated in a year or two....

and to think, i'm getting two of those cards you have listed there.

also, the alienware psu isn't ati certified - i'm going for the hx1000w, which is.

nice rig though... although it's not much bang for your buck with the price/performance of DDR3

Very true....for thats kind of money you could build a rig quad sli even and 2xi7 extreme's and 4x 30'' LCD screens and liquad cooling and so on and so on. I would also not choose that case as I'm sure it is very heavy and also will not last- being that shiny plastic....I think I will stick with my SLI'd 8800GTX's and my baby Q6600 for a while longer....Just need a new MB...I've run out of SATA ports....well I only had 4 to begin with....Any suggestions for sub 2k ?

I think so....looks like the PSU blew and as a result everything else blew....
Will test it later in my new PC
Do you know of anyone who offers data recovery in JHB ?

Not in JHB but in Pretoria. LVC Recovery. They're closed from 19 Dec-05 Jan, but emergency recoveries can be done via 072-676-8645.

Their website is under construction, so no use I give the URL :)

Ok I need some help here

Let me give you my actual situation.
Ok me and my dad have this agreement in our house regards the "media centre" setup;
The agreement goes whatever he spends on the setup, after agreement, I will spend half.
I.e. My dad spends 2k and I have to spend 1k.

So we have the media centre ( P4 @3.2 HT , 3 GB DDR400 RAM, Geforce fx5700, Gigabyte p4 titan mobo and 4xnew 500gb hdd(possibly blown :( )

Then we have the TV - Samsung 52" Full HD LCD TV (LA52M81)

We also have a good Yamaha amp(RX-V450) and 5.1 speaker package(YAMAHA NS-P240)

The things we are lacking is a BD player and a good wireless network ( draft N maybe)
So I have some catching up to do as my dad has bought all of what we have so far....
What should I buy ?
I'm looking to spend close on 20k(even though this is way less than half of what my dad has spent) and I need a BD player and fast streaming network.
Was considering the PS3 and maybe one of those networks that work through the electrical sockets.
Any other suggested purchases to do with a media centre ?

Why not just run normal network cable? It will be a cheaper and a lot more reliable than any wifi/plc setup.

What case would you be looking at? I have the Antec Fusion HTPC case (pics & review - http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/articles/show/antec_fusion_review/) It works very well but the brushed aluminium finish might not go with the aethetics of the sound & screen.

Oh and another thing to consider is that MCE (in both XP & Vista flavour) do not have BD support and from what I've read don't plan to have any in the near future. Weigh up shelling out for an additional BD player vs. the hastle of having to close MCE, open WinDVD (etc) and then playing the movie from there.

What did I do to deserve this I ask you...

Ditto, last night also.
My server got popped.
A kfn5-d sli dual opty with 2xdual core CPU's, 4gig of ECC Reg ram, 8800GTS 640MB.
Zap came through the telkom line and popped the modem with a crack.
I got up, grabbed the line-in on the modem and as I pulled it out the second ZAP hit me.
I was holding the jack and could see the spark as it hit me.
Knocked me down, thought my heart was going to jump out my chest. Luckely my main storage is external, but losing my savegames is going to hurt.

With LVC it's a flat-rate of R2k, if they don't have to rebuild the drive.

I used them about a year ago as my mobo/HDD went to the great hardware heaven in the sky.

I guess only people with legal stuff would use them, they might not want to be judged.

PS: I would be able to use them with confidence :p

the one drive seems to have gone to heaven and the rest are fine...YAY

Well I would test the wireless connection before investing in it, especially if you're old house is built with thick walls.

Very neat stuff!!! Really like the PC setup! Nice choice of graphics card!
I got the ATI Radeon 3870 512MB DDR4. I feel I should take the leap to Vista (DX10) and get the full potential out of the MoBo + GFX but still feel somewhat unsure?

You somewhat left? i.e. Socialist/comm?

Thnx. I am currently sorting out my room to have all my **** together in one nice setup :) And yeah get a HD4850, awesome performance from a R2100 gfx card.

No not a lefty/socialist/comm. I got that wallpaper about a year ago whilst going through a wallpaper site, reminded me of the game RA1. havn't found(bothered to look) for a better one.

Data recovery can range from cheap to extremely expensive depending on whats wrong with the HDD.

We had a situation with one of our servers where due to incorrect RAID config we lost a lot of valuable geo-map data. Ended up costing us less to use a junior resource to recapture all the data!!!

Ouch! When you got hardware on the line its good to invest in all the backup and surge protection equip!

i was also an unfortunate victim of lightning, the items that keeled over (for good, it seems):
projector
sony amp
hdmi switch
xbox 360 ethernet interface (fortunately only one got fried)

now to get all these replaced and invest in a decent surge protector. anyone know of good places to shop as well as prices to expect so that i don't keel over myself when i go shopping?
