And so it begins...

Johannesburg - The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) have warned on Tuesday that that e-tolls would lead to an increase in taxi fares, which would ultimately seriously affect the poor.

NTA spokesperson Theo Malele said that although the government had promised that taxis would not pay, 80% of the taxis in the province did not have permits.

"About 50% of those permits are lying with the permits board. How do we apply for exemption while the playing field is not even? This is an autocratic way of doing things," he said.

Forgive my ignorance. Are the cameras linked to a server? How many photos does it take per second?

Thanks, and it's a pleasure. I just ask that everyone shares this. I've now made it as easy as possible to do so...

I have not watched it yet (watch later), but I have shared it :)

All gantries linked at local server at cameras and all connected to central server for billing/logging

I'm trying to figure out why Sanral is so adamant that users register and get e-tags, although it's not compulsory. There must be a glitch somewhere in their system.

We should have a prize for whom ever figures it out.

Perhaps there is no integration to the eNAtis system... and all queries have to be handled manually? Forcing you to register negates that problem.

185000 cars through one gantry (in 24Hrs) that are not registered adds 123 Transactions/minute to query car ownership on eNatis... that is ONE Gantry (OUTA figures from William Nicol)

Well, it sounds about right concerning integration to eNatis. Sanral is a private company, so if a person is not registered with them, they don't have a right to access our personal information.

How will they be sending the bills?

I assume the invoices would be posted to the registered keeper of the car... aka... what is on the eNatis database.

They get your banking details/credit card/debit order to take money from your account whenever. Plus double identification to prove vehicle was you..

Another day, another 17 pages, and nothing new, no surprise.

Fact is that it is a 1st world problem and it is the 1st worlders whinging the loudest about a 1st world problem in a 3rd world society despite that fact that at a cap of R450 for most (including unregistered taxis) it is a piddling amount per month.
The same 1st worlders that boast about breaking the law and not paying their fines....yep, huge issue for them those traffic rules shouldn't be there, make the govt fight for the money etc, make the system unworkable.

What do we have;

It shouldn't cost that much.
I am already paing licence, fuel levy etc they can use that
I ahve a right to free or subsidised upgrades of road, don't care where the mony comes from.
They do not have a right to send me a fine for using it, it is not a criminal offence, not like those guys breaking in and stealing.
Why do they want me to have an e-tag, they can employ more staff and systems to track down the recalcitrant freeloaders and send them a fine which we will not pay
etc etc..blah blah blah

The overwhelming majority of south africans are not affected by this , that is a fact, they need education and basic services etc long before they set foot on a toll road.

You want to make a difference to those people, you want to decrease the majority of a corrupt govt and change things for the better? Stop whinging about 1st world issues and start getting involved in social issues, engage with those people, talk to them, maybe your staff, gardener, maid etc...if one person can convince 3 to 5 people on average, then you will get resistance, try and make a difference to those people's lives instead.

I don't expect agreement, but I come in here and all I see on so called 'current affairs' sub forum is a massive 'whinge-fest' about a corrupt govt, from 1st worlders comfortable in a 1st world cocoon that they feel is being threatened.

cheers

...you may resume normal service....

the overwelming majority of South Africans live in Gauteng and travel that route daily, of course they are affected! It is the economic hub of this country.

We know you like commenting on SA issues by always trying to put yourself in some other league, as if you're more enlightened than the rest of the community.

E tolling systems didn't work in first world Germany for the simple reason that it is a stupid system. It also goes against the postulates of law, assuming you're guilty until you can prove yourself innocent. The idea was ridiculous from the start, anyone with half a brain cell and insight can see that.

We ''wine'' to make our country better, not worse. Your claim that we are not politically or socially involved is just blatant ignorance. It is precisely because we are involved that we come to these conclusions.

Kindly explain why I shouldn't complain when everything I work my ass off for is being threatened? Because some guy is worse off than me? Bugger that. I'm not a socialist, never will be.
