Plates are cloned in 5 minutes.... most people are going to leave their tags in the car. *smash*... I see a nice clear highway for a Cash-heist getaway.

So if I remove my tag from the car and put it in my bag, and then get a lift from a friend - does he get penalised at the gantry 'cos my tag responded too?.. cos the tag doesnt match the car.

/me curious

I can't see any value in stealing an e-tag, except if you own a car that's identical with the same plates - so why would one remove your e-tag from your vehicle, apart from the shame of owning the tag?

Valid point... I just have a phobia for leaving stuff in my car.

if somebody was dumb enough to swipe your e-tag, your exposure would only be R150 to Sanral for a replacement

How sure are you of that? ... If they verified plates to a tag, then there is no point of a tag in the first place. I think the plate pictures will only be used in the case of an Etag dispute.

Very sure.

I tried the highways today, nice and empty, I mostly "changed lanes" between the reflectors at the gantries... wonder if I will be billed for that? Will have to wait and see.

It was explained to me by the Kapsch test manager for the project, so pretty certain. I spent an awful lot of hours in the SANRAL HQ and spoke to many people during that time.

Dafuq?! So absolutely anyone can view the debt of another motorist?

yip, it's called the loss of private citizen information - whilst state information is now protected more vehemently

I haven't checked yet, but does it indicate gantries used?

what's probably even worse, is that I've heard you can call the Sanral helpline, give a plate number and get the home address - should do wonders for hi-jackers....

RFID tags have an inherent problem in that they derive their power from the RF signal beamed at them. This means that attenuation and long distances results in unreliable communcation.

Transponders on the other hand have a powered receiver and transmitter and solve the problem of attenuation and power source. They also offer muchly increased range.

In the radio transponders I have designed, I have had to solve the problem of collisions, so I am interested to see how well, or how badly a job they did and whether one can actually crash the receiver firmware. I am almost certain the receiver is a software defined radio.

excuse my ignorance guys....

what is the difference between a transponder and an RFID tag - Is an RFID tag not a transponder?
