I wonder if you change the font on the plate this means cameras cannot pick up the plate?
It seems so... remember these numberplate fonts are designed to be machine-readable.
I will be putting this to the test very soon.

Please let us know the outcome.

However - I'm sure there is a bit of law that says plates must be in a certain font, not so?

I have a more interesting proposal, if there are other number and letter stickers stuck with the number plate font on the back and front of the vehilce (but not next to each other, so as not to violate the law on that issue) will that confuse the system? I wonder...

From what I understand the plate must remain free of obstacles - this might apply to stickers and crap on the plate, too?

Not allowed anything that's not part of the vehicle's standard equipment within x cm of the plate. Can't remember the distance.

Then that applies to stickers. Which is not part of the vehicle's "Standard equipment"

Thats quite interesting, so have a vehicle number say DEL 123 GP as your vehicle identifier just above your numberplate.

I wonder how enforceable this will be. There are plenty of cars with plastic plates.

Edit: I see there is no mention of the font though....

Right so that applies to GP plates. What if I were to have the car registered in another province and "use it" here in GP?

AFAIK you cannot apply for an e-tag - you have to buy the daily passes. But no doubt the system scans and links the registration as well...

So you are telling me that if I get a job in JHB and decide I want to commute ever week in my car, from KZN because I prefer spending the weekend in a better place than that cesspit that is JHB, that I won't be able to get an eTag?

That just smells like an opportunity to challenge the costs.

They pushed this through when they started with the e-tollie.
The expiry thing is to extort more money out of people.
The plastic ones are no longer accepted mainly due to the fact that they make it easy to fit countermeasures i.e. coatings that defeat fixed speed cameras and e-toll cameras
