The Ghost Squad Update/Cape Town

No government can eradicate drugs. None have ever been successful nor will they ever be.

Agreed. But a government that puts its head in the sand and rather focuses on nabbing soccer moms on the phone while driving isnt the best use of time and resources either.

yep, I agree with that as well.

Traffic and bylaw enforcement are a metro/municipal affair, traffic enforcement can also be handled by provincial units from what I have seen. General policing is a national government affair and the local authorisites have limited input.

Provincial units do sweet FA. I know one officer who patrols the road between Mossel bay and Albertina but its mind numbing work. They don't have the equipment the metro/muncipal traffic have . They just sit under trees.

Traffic law enforcement is their to enforce the rules of the road so fining these soccer moms is part of their duty.

So much high tech equipment for traffic offenses (i.e. revenue generation)

Revenue is the name of the game.

By 2008 City of Cape town had increased its revenue from 5 Million per Month to 13 Million per Month since 2004.

2012 the were losing about 7 million a month in unpaid fines

2013 sees no option of fines straight to court , so no lost revenue.

The "Ghost Squad" is there for a reason, everybody gets to know where the cameras are, everybody slows down when they see or pass a marked traffic car, these guys are there to generate money and nothing more.

Well, at least its better than stationary cameras and addresses more than speeding.

"Ghost Squad" - way to make more money and boost for WC.

As i said last year, we need visible policing not some guys hiding on their high level spec cars waiting to pouch on us.

This will never happen in Limpopo.

Agreed 100%. But when there are more serious crimes and social ills to deal with and a limited budget, I find it quite backwards to focus on the things that should not be high on the priority list and more or less ignoring the things that should be.

Will get a ticket chop chop for going 70km/h in a 60 km/h zone but expect to be shot dead in a gang neighbourhood. LMAO

Not all their cars are exactly high-spec; they even drive early 1990’s models. You a bit anxious coming to Cape Town with your taxi now?

but those ones with the lights on top arent ghost squad. they just normal cars that they 'patrol' with

most of them are newish cars i.e Golf GTIs.

Ohh what happened to that nanny law of confiscating cellphones?

Of course it won't. Limpopo hasn't a penny to scratch its butt with.

I'm not speaking about those ones which are visible. Here is a ghost car active in our sectors which are an old yellow Cortina bakkie (with canopy). This vehicle also patrols on the N2.

I did notice about two weeks ago that these black Fortuners are in abundance at Strand police station, don’t know why… Also a new SS (but this is dedicated to our anti-drug squad).

Been seeing the ghost squad on the N2 for the last few months and while they are few, they do make a difference especially for those damn taxis.

Yeah, also noticed them quite a lot on the N2 lately. There is one guy on a maroon Honda. He is ALWAYS out there. Got kakked out the other morning by an unmarked when I pulled into the taxi lane 100m before it stopped being a taxi lane. Almost had a heart attack.

Yep this year they give you instant court dates but also the option to pay admission of guilt fines and if you pay this and show a prosecutor he may dismiss the fines on proof on say the offence -an expired disc is rectified and stuff like that but you need to bring id as well.

So streamlined. And strict!

Yet rapist, out on bail the same day LMAO.

I would expect it has something to do with them being traffic officers and not police officers.

They have 4 high spec silver chevy sedans loaded with Cameras and other high tech stuff that you and your brothers would run off with if you saw the car unattended.

I am not afraid of them. When i was at cape town last week , i did have a casual chat with them. They are very friendly.
