The Ghost Squad Update/Cape Town

I got as much of a fright when the silver chev lit up like a christmas tree & came pouncing in with sirens screaming.
I think I little poo may have drizzled down my leg.

There was a 2013 White Opel Astra (not sure if OPC) on N7 today doing some traffic stuff, Could see the blues inside the car and under the grill. Becareful guys and girls

OK, they are almost equal now. I was wrong. I thought the one had bypassed the other already. But the one is rising (accidents) and the other falling (murder rate):

Unable to find a link that just clearly states out the 2012 road fatality rate, but its just under 15 000 for 2012 and growing (and leaves many people maimed and injured).

So to arrest the growth in that we need more traffic and diligent and proper law enforcement, happy?

We should start doing this in Cape Town

Jeremy there is one of these vehicles already in operation in Cape Town CBD by one of the special task units. A family member involved in the unit has said that it has been a successful method of catching the guys however its not a publicized operation as they don't want the guys to catch on on their methods.

That red Honda bike pulled somebody off on the n2 in somerset west on Saturday. Suspect he patrols there.

Car probably spends more time in PG Autoglass than on the street

"Ghost Squad" - way to make more money and boost for WC.

As i said last year, we need visible policing not some guys hiding on their high level spec cars waiting to pouch on us.

This will never happen in Limpopo.
I would normally agree, but we have some exceptional circumstances nowadays with roadsters using technology to avoid detection from the authorities. For the last few years several areas of Cape Town have been harassed by street racers who collect at chosen spots and then use our streets as their racing tracks.
Without knowing the inner details I assume these people case out an area first before each race/gathering, marked police vehicles never get near these people to make an arrest. I have seen these street racers, anything up to 50 cars or more at a gathering, everyone with cell phones, some would have police radios and who knows what other equipment, not to mention the cars are all souped-up, so no Police van is ever going to get near these guys.
Besides when the authorities do arrive in their marked cars the perpetrators either make as though they are innocent and get warned to move off or they speed off at a rate of knots leaving the marked cars in a wake of rubber, waking up the residents in the process with tyre screeching from the roadsters and sirens blaring from the marked cars.
This I can assure you is all part of the thrill for the street racers. Some ghastly accidents have occurred in Cape Town due to these street racers.

Anyway there must be many other reasons why we need the Ghost Squad.

Anyway there must be many other reasons why we need the Ghost Squad.

Here's a prime example:

12 JULY 2013 The City of Cape Town’s Highway Ghost Unit pursued and arrested two illegal drag-racers on the N1 yesterday evening, 11 July 2013.

The two vehicles, a silver Mercedes CLK 55 V8 and a black BMW 335i, were observed driving at high speed, swerving through traffic and forcing other motorists off the road on the N1 southbound, near the Lower Church Street off-ramp.

Ghost Squad officers chased the offenders for approximately 7km before they were able to stop and apprehend the suspects, who were then both arrested on charges of reckless and negligent driving.

“These vehicles were driving in an extremely dangerous manner, and the officers are to be commended for their excellent work in apprehending them before anyone could be hurt,” said the Spokesperson for City of Cape Town Traffic Services, Inspector Maxine Jordaan.

These arrests should also serve as a warning to other aspirant dragsters: once the Ghost Squad has you in their sights, there is no escaping,” she continued.

Yesterday evening also saw Traffic Officers hold an enforcement operation on Nelson Mandela Boulevard. Successes included the impoundment of 25 cellphones where motorists were caught talking on the phone while driving, one arrest for furnishing false information, and one arrest for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Officers recorded 18 minibus taxi-related offences and issued 2 176 fines for other traffic offences such as illegal manoeuvres and speeding.

“Nelson Mandela Boulevard has been earmarked by Traffic Services for increased patrols and operations. Illegal behaviour along this busy stretch of road not only places motorists in danger, but also disrupts the flow of traffic. The purpose of these regular operations is to warn motorists that transgressions at this key interchange will be punished, and thus reduce congestion and improve driver safety,” continued Inspector Jordaan.

The cops must have some seriously quick cars to catch a CLK 55 and a 335i.

Not necessarily. They can't outrun or keep up but they can keep target in sight. The suspects probably hit traffic as they were headed southbound N1 near lower church st or stopped because the road ends in town and that's where "Game Over" flashes.
