The Handmaid's Tale

Season 2 you can watch at 4x and it still was slow. Some of it I watched at 2x (because you still get the soundtrack), but 75% of it at 4x.

I'm disappointed that they did a sequel. It was a classic from 1985 and the primary season covered the whole book. Coming up with a season 2 is not true to the original story - it was supposed to be left with uncertainty.

They really struggled to stretch the book out into a TV series... it should have been a mini series. For season 2 they should have done another story from the Gilead world, a new story.

The book is amazing and while I am enjoying the series its not on the same level. The sense of mystery and claustrophobia is not the same, it doesn't have the same tension.
For example in the book you only find out what the handmaids to about half way though.

The TV series is a bit dumbed down and contrived, they try a bit too hard to make it look like something that could happen now. The magic of the original story is that it doesn't try too hard but eerily feels like its something that could happen now.

The book ends with a series of fictional lectures looking back at the Gilead regime from about 150 years into the future, trying to understand the events leading up to the regime and what it was like to live at the time, much like we do for WW2 and other periods. The layers of storytelling that Margret Atwood has is truly phenomenal.

I fear it's losing its ultimate appeal. S1 was really engrossing. S2 had me frustrated at times with the seemingly longer than necessary close ups of an emotional Offred. My opinion is that S2 should have been the end of it. S3 better be bloody brilliant or I fear they will have spoilt what was a damn good show.

Agreed. The book was amazing, I couldn't put it down. Is there only one book? It had a very unsatisfactory ending :/

I agree 100% with justplain. Doubt I will watch S3 unless reports are that it picks up the pace. Close ups of, a not attractive, Elisabeth Moss was very off putting.

Yeah only the one book. It ends like many books do though. Supposed to leave you with some questions and allow you to decide the ending as you please

Blessed be the fruit to everyone.

So how's season 3 so far?

Not sure if I should start with it, or wait for all the episodes...

Under his eye.

Aren't they released all together? Got to say I am yet to finish season 1, and not sure I'll ever given that they're stretching something that could be covered by a mini series over these many seasons.

Do it, it's very good. They release a new episode every week though.

I'm of the opposing view where I see the books and tv/movie as 2 different mediums. The books tell one story, and the motion picture tells another, only drawing some inspiration from the book.

Once you start distinguishing the two from each other, it allows you to enjoy both.

The writing is actually very good on the show, and it hasn't won all those awards for no good reason...

I'm also letting it stew on my media server for now. Didn't feel the need to start watching it yet.
Also, I need some comedy shows to switch it up with.

Tried to watch this, found it to be one of those things I don't want to see.

Same thing with Dis ek Anna, they can tell the story without showing us the gruesome things I feel.

A lot of dumb things are happening and characters are making a lot of dumb out of character decisions.
I also don't like how they are ending every episode with a 'I am boss' camera stare down only for that character to be decisively mellow and pathetic the next episode.

Like a lot of serials, this one has outstayed it's welcome
