The Healthy Snack Thread

My problem is the sweet stuff after supper, (chocolate is good for you, really)

Anyway, was shopping the other day and I saw those dried fruit squares. Haven't had them in ages and when I last had them they were all like banana and apricot flavour (blech!) and the mystery green ones?

These days they're all red and black, strawberry and (other)berry flavour, excellect!

Finished a whole bag in a few days, now I'm longing for more.

Dunno how heathy they are though, still very sweet

Black = Prune:sick:
Green = Apple

You can buy fresh prunes at Fruit & Veg, they're a bit like small plums.

My favorite is:
1 tin tuna
2 spoons miracle whip (kraft)
2 pickles depending on size
Salt+pepper=parsley
Olive Oil

Mixed on rye bread. Its quite a lot so it kills the idea of a second snack.:)

Or (less healthy)
Peanut butter on RiceCrackers. Something about that combination just tastes right. Too bad about the sugar in the peanutbutter.

Or avocado + lemon juice + pepper. Maybe not exactly a snack.

Cherry/plum tomatoes, sliced
Fresh basil chopped
Quality olive oil
Mix into bowl,

Thinly sliced white cheese

Cracker bread (maize)

Salt/pepper to taste.

Great for the munchies late at night:)

Re insomnia, I have had it on and off for 5 years. Exercise is key, also don't eat later than 19h30 if you can help it, else make it a light meal no meat/pasta. Try have your carbs at lunch, avoid at night (unless its a big one)

Fark that. I would rather not sleep thanks. Besides, I quite enjoyed my insomnia - especially the crazy meds that doc gave me. I am saving the rest for a special occasion - like a sleep over with Denny Crane!

Snack? That sounds like 3 hours of prep work.

At 4pm-ish everyday I crave something snackish and quickish to make ..um..ish.

Fair enough

:)

Been avoiding "medication" lately, if it don't grow, don't eat it:rolleyes:

Prep time = >5min, is that too long?

For me it is. 5 min is about 4 mins 58 seconds longer than it takes to reach for the chips or choc's. I have no will power.

Was like that too. Stopped buying all the **** and "oh Fook no snack", oh, I can make that quick...

Time for some new recipes please. As you can tell, insomnia is back and that has resulted in toasted salami, emmenthal and chilli rolls tonight.

You can also make crisps out of almost all veg. One of my favourites is tomato crisps. Thinly sliced, salt, cayenne pepper, 100 deg C oven and takes about 30-40min till crisp. Cool and enjoy...

Pros: great substitute for crisps and much healthier and tastier. Can create your own flavour combinations just avoid too much salt and MSG.

Cons: Lenghty cooking time

I had a look at the vegetable crisps sold at Woollies and surprisingly enough, they are not that much of an improvement over normal crisps as far as their kilojoule count and fat content.

Thats because they deep fry theirs and add flavourings and other ugly stuffs. My recipe is a wholesome min-fat one that is still tasty.

Ha!!! :D I want, I want - give me!!!!!

Havent had a proper roti since the last time I went shopping at Hyper By The Sea in Durbs. Some Indian lady has been there for years outside the exit selling her tasty litle treats, and she has become quite famous for them.

Yours homemade? Ask Mr Blu if I can come over for dinner? :D
