I just want a braai room.
My build starts next week for my braai room (plus garage to granny flat conversion).
Super excited, nervous and having feelings of impending poverty... but going to amazing.

Will be about 6x7m, everything inside the red section.

Edit: Excuse the yard, hasn't gotten much love since prepping for the building to start.

you can apparently fix that with a bead of silicone under the lip.

what would you guage your slope or drop/rise as roughly?
Thanks, that's such a simple solution to install a drip edge - definitely going to try it as soon as the weather clears. There's a lot of DIY that needs to happen once the winter moves on.

Took my spirit level (which I've had for 4 years and only used once) and had a look just now. The drop is more than I thought. The total length is about 5 meters and for the first meter the drop is significant - close to 20mm over the length of the spirit level (~650mm). The problem I guess is the last meter before the gutter the slope is only about 2mm over that same length, and I'm thinking the last 10cm is pretty much flat which is where the problem comes in.

in some positive news, they are going to adjust the slope of my roof before work gets further, on one hand it was me pushing them to keep the height of the roof as high as possible but also a little bit of oversight on their end (they didnt factor the ground slope and as such one pole was at a good level and the rest (other 4) were at a very tiny slope.

so the slope wont quite be at 5 degrees as recommeneded, but will be significantly closer to it

Have you asked these okes yet?

Nope. Did look at their website. Saw a video on YouTube about CoolCrete - will try it and report back. First going to try and clean the bricks after work.
Atleast i got rid of the thorn in my foot.

I'm about to go chat to my one neighbour about breaking down a section of vibrecrete wall and rebuilding it, will be built a bit higher (plans pending approval). I was thinking to cover him and me in case of dispute I should write up a little document that we both sign. Something like:

----
I, {the neighbour}, hereby give my consent to {me} to undertake renovations on our shared boundary wall to the following extent:

  1. Some detail here about what will be done
  2. etc
Consent is provided subject to the following conditions being met:
  1. Conditions like plastering both sides, etc
  2. etc

Signed by neighbour
Signed by me

-----

What you think, is it necessary?

it can't hurt i guess, all depends on your guys relationship.

It's my back neighbour and I've never met him... so no idea what he's like.
I had the wall between me and my back neighbour rebuild but higher (pre cast). He didn't say a word. I also can't see him now. :)

If you approach them in a friendly manner and such, then your idea of a little "contract" sounds like a good way to cover all parties.

Just had my first hurdle, went around the block to them and they have gates with no doorbell so I can't get in or call them. Guess I'll break the wall down and just say hi :)

Backyard project in progress... Initial assessment shows that I will come out completely broke once complete...

Depends, the pool doesn't look that bad in condition considering. Clean it up, get it painted and fill it up.

Have any of you tried to paint/re-paint your Wispeco (Style)Roll Up garage Doors. It is the metal type, BUT I have been told that there is no easy way of painting these (without the new paint peeling after a year)? Apparently there is some oil layer on it, and ideally you need to get it sand blasted (which just sound expensive). I have also noted the braiding on the sides seems to be shot, have anybody replaced theirs? So with regards to the paint, if you have done it and had no issues years later, what was your process and what paint did you use?

If a new door is 2k, just replace it.. chances are you could use some chemical paint stripper to get the old paint off, give it a good sanding to allow for a good key, paint some primer for additional good key and then paint..

However, between material costs and your time, you are losing versus buying a new door..

yeah i am thinking this, then sell the old one for like even R200-R400 on gumtree/junkmail etc to help you break even

I hope someone replies, but in short that is what it would comes down too. So I am trying to way up the costs (there is not much wrong with doors otherwise, except for the brading on the sides) so I reckon painting will be at most half the cost of replacing. So very curious what other people have tried.
