The hardware shop is closed on Sunday so will visit them next week. I'm hoping they'll offer to modify it for me because I'm a good customer and they give awesome, awesome service - Cedar paint emporium near Cresta.

Thsnks guys, will report back.

The water in our area was switched off for maintenance and when it came back on the pressure resulted in a fitting in the bathroom coming loose. As a result the laminate flooring in two of the bedrooms got wet and is now warping.

What other options should I consider instead of laminate?

I noticed that a lot of places recommend vinyl now. And there are tiles with a wood finish too.

Don't want carpets and would prefer if floor was not cold. (Laminate was better than tiles in this aspect).

There are many tiles with a wood look to them these days... and they aren't ridiculously expensive either...

Vinyl is great but obviously pricey.

jirre that pressure must have been intense tho?

Not necessarily...

The lines empty, so the amount of pressure can actually build beyond spec if the house doesn't have a proper pressure regulator on the whole system. (I'm pedantic as fsck, I have 4 of them at different points in my plumbing system)

still, how much pressure do you think it takes to loosen a fitting?

i suppose it really much depends in what way did the fitting fail?

Pretty much this :)

If the washers were in the process of perishing and failing, this spike in pressure probably just hastened their failure....

I dont think I have ever seen a tap that failed from the washer perishing suddenly, if anything they always either drip at first or the rubber gets stuck and you have terrible flow, to me it sounds like the actual fitting must have come off or something in order for the water to flow out of the basin/bath/shower, I mean think about it, at your place, if your tap suddenly came on full pressure where would the majority of the water go?

Depends on which type of fitting. The toilet showers are notorious at failing. When you purchase them they even tell youbtonkeepnthe angle valve closed when not in use

the toilet showers? are you washing your arse with the hand shower and calling it a toilet shower?

I have so many questions....

but really what does that connect to, does it just sit next to the toilet (doesn't it drip at all)? do you literally use it in the toilet bowl? And then do you have a separate arse towel next to the toilet paper holder? does each family member have their own arse towel, do you share arse towels?

All the questions we've always wanted to know the answers to :D

1 towel with 4 quadrants, each family members name is embroidered on one quadrant..

This is awful. Sorry to hear about the unnecessary expense.

I don't mean to sidejack your post, but it got me thinking about one of my taps that needs a new washer soon. Obviously I would need to figure out what size washer to buy for them (I may as well change all the washers when I replace the leaky one), but how would one tell the difference?

I don't want to buy the wrong ones, turn off the water supply, open the tap up, see that it's the incorrect size, have to button the tap up again and wait for the geyser to refill (doubt the geyser has a shut-off valve installed on the outlet), go and buy more washers and repeat the process.

Or should I just buy multiple sizes and hope for the best?

You can usually get them in packs of multiple sizes

turn off the mains, take out a cold tap, go to the hardware.

But that said, your geyser shouldn't empty to turn off water supply, once incoming pressure stops and you release initial pressure the geyser should not keep flowing...
