imo you are going to need to take the grinder to it, buff out all of the rust, treat it, and paint it.
 
I was thinking of cutting out the rust with a dremel... treating the remainder, and filling with something.

i wouldn't cut it out unless it is rusted through, you will really struggle to fill it nicely unless you can weld, i would just get hardcore with removing the rust layer
 
We're looking at creating a new splash back for our stove. We're thinking a glass splash back (against the painted wall) with a wallpaper of some sort or film on the back (against the wall).
Has anyone done anything similar?
What glass would you use?

I've seen similar things done...

I would definitely use a shatterproof/armourplated glass as a start so that if you bump it with a pot or something you minimise the risk of it shattering, you will also need some way of removing the glass to clean behind it from time to time because mould and damp will be a problem.

We're trying to clean up the kitchen a bit and remove the old skanky (falling off) tiles and paint to match the rest of the house. I'd love to properly re-do everything but we don't have the cash money for that. So I thought this might be a good medium term solution.


I was thinking as an alternative we could get some stainless steel adhesive splashback sheets/tiles. I'm reluctant to do full blown tiling though as in the long term we want to do some cupboard and counter moving etc as well as retile the floor.

Other ideas are welcome though. :)

Let me know what you get back from them as a price, I'm keen (ish) on doing the same as a splash back in my kitchen..

I should have done that for the stove part - as @chickenbeef said, over time oil and other grime accumulates on the grouting. Even the colour of the surface cleaning cloth has stained the white grouting in between our white brick tiles.

Well you can get one big tile to cover the surface area. I saw in this thread earlier, or the other one where people were spending ridiculous amounts of money on BIC, there are examples of what I am talking about.
 
Guys, your expert advice is needed with regards to interior paints. So far my search has been narrowed down to Prominent Paint, Plascon and Dulux.

Prominent comes in the satin sheen finish which I am after as well as cheaper than both Plascon and Dulux but highly recommended on other forums.

Do any of you guys have any feedback with regards to any other brands I should look out for or some first hand experience with the above.

I am located in Durban so if you perhaps know of where i can get the above at good prices, please do share.

Appreciate it guys

personally I have always purchased indoor paints from universal paints here by us, paint looks good, is washable and seems to last well.
 
I ended up using duram endure... Reasonably priced and decent quality

Anyone know where I might find a stainless steel backsplash cut to size if those fall through? My Google-fu isn't helping me today.

You could always just use a standard steel merchant, but then you will be buying a full sheet (at whatever size) and I've tried my best to avoid that so far...

Well they have pretty good reply time. But at R1100-R1500 per square meter it's way too expensive. Price list attached.

So onto some of those merchants or maybe we do just tile a backdrop...
 
Yussie, that is pricey...

But given that its an all in one thing, there is something to be said for the ease of installation (Probably)
