Damn... now I feel bad for not going to my in laws place today. They have a leak from a ridiculous roofing screw up someone did.

There is literally a 50cm piece of gutter INSIDE the cavity of flat roof because the metal roof sheeting has so many angles and joins from where two areas were joined. This 50cm piece of gutter is blocked off on both ends, with a big hole drilled into it - and a pool hose glued into the hole that runs out of the wall.

It gets better - Then underneath the one end of this 50cm gutter is a 5 litre juice bottle which has been cut open to catch the dripping from place where the hole was made for the pool hose.... and the juice bottle has a hosepipe glued into the bottom to run the water out of the juice bottle out the wall.

Sadly I'm not exaggerating. I haven't been up on the roof to see wtf is actually going on, I just died a small death when I took off the wet and damaged ceiling board.

did the same muppet do the roof as the one who put up my small extension? this guy literally let the gutter go into the new ibr roof sheet, cut the gap for it and used that alluminum bitumin backed tap to try seal around it :/ like guy gutters don't go into roof, they end next to roof sections wtaf - so yeah i can beleive you alright xD this is another example of why i want to do this mass reno project myself, tired of paying big money to deal with issues later, i will rather pay less and make my own issues

What a joke hey... ai. Doing it yourself may not always be cheaper, but at the end of the job you may end up with some new tools and definitely some new skills.. which is always great.

Any clever ideas to make this side of the roof watertight..? There is no sealant or filler of any kind between the actual tiles and the top of the garage wall and what I am finding is that rain water is running over the side and runs down the bottom of the tile, dripping into the garage.. only a few spots..

Edit: inside, you should be able to see the drops.. could it be that the water is just saturating through the tile..?

I used expanded foam

That's a lot of silicone and definitely not saturating through the tile..

Edit: I could probably use that expanding foam that comes in a spray can..

The foam will work, then I would cover the foam with sika mastic or equivalent.

for ibr and corrugated you actually get inserts to fill those gaps. Not sure if it’s available for the tiles. I’ll find out before next weekend

Years ago I did some sealing with expanding foam covered by a layer of urethane for the final finish. It has lasted better than the surrounding plaster.

ok, i underestimated how bad painting a roof is - also there literally cannot be anything worse to paint onto a roof than bonding liquid, lord it is like painting the roof with milk. Literally did the bonding liquid (20L) on the standalone garage today and my back is wrecked. As much as i wanted to solo the whole reno i think i am going to concede and get 2 guys in to do some of the ugly work under my guidance. they can bonding liquid the rest of the roof and paint it with me, should hopefully speed up the job also as whilst I am doing it as i can I also can't let it go on for a year xD

Expanded foam really doesn't get very far. Plus it deteriorates if it gets UV light.

at roof paint... I'll never do that. I let my tiles wear to their original colour.

Lol, I was wondering how much it would cost to just replace all the tiles with new plain ones instead of the cost of paint, but I am pretty sure they would degrade overtime and then either need to be replaced or painted

I was always under the assumption that roofs need to be maintained by painting/cleaning, but in fact it does nothing for the life of the tiles.

hmm it prob would be like 2-3 times the price for me to replace all the tiles...hmmm, prob best to just paint it i guess i am already started

I also went up on the roof at my in laws place today, thanks to you making me feel guilty yesterday.
I discovered no less than 5 different types of roof sheeting in about a 4 square meter area. I went to town with foam sealer, membrane and waterproofing paint. It just needs to get through this winter, will replace the whole thing in summer.

This is what I have to contend with - yes - those are bricks keeping down roof sheets that were just placed on top of older leaking sheets.

Does anyone here have some good ideas on how to fix a small solar panel to a tiled roof?

The panel is a small one for charging the battery in an outdoor security light. It measures approximately 300mm x 150mm and is mounted in an aluminium channel (c-section) frame. So basically it will be the periphery of the frame that needs to be attached. I would also like it to be removable since I am renting and will take it with me.

Alternatively, might it just be easier to mount it to the wall with a bracket?

can you show a picture of the frame?

Yip, pretty much no slope at all. It actually dips in towards the joins... nice.
With last nights storms I doubt my patch job had a chance to dry, and with my luck the membrane probably lifted and made it worse.

I have the same setup. I just siliconed it to the tiles. Shouldn't be to difficult to remove it later if needs be.
