Looking for someone to build a carport (with the sheet metal roof - not a shadeport) in Johannesburg. Any suggestions?

Argh, tiling that just isn't done right sigh. Given up getting the contractor in to fix it now. It's 90% there now so going to live with it.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use Brett Apker. His company has several names Steel Guard being one of them. They're somewhere on the East Rand.

He constructed a three car carport for us with virtually no slope, water pours down the house walls after the slightest little bit of rain. Ducked and dived to avoid the fix-ups the engineer insisted on before he'd sign off on the structure. One things Brett neglected was hurricane clips - really???

I wouldn't be slagging him off if he'd rectified the job but he stopped taking my calls and didn't reply to messages or emails.

Avoid at all costs.

EDIT: P.S. check the slope before you pay :D
P.P.S. our carport leaks because they put screws in the valleys instead of the hills - if that's possible.

I reported in post # 3323 that the kitchen contractor had done a duck

A suitable worded letter from my attorney has refreshed his mind and he came back last week to deliver the remaining boards. The counter tops will be ready on Tuesday and his guys are back tomorrow at 8.30 to finish the job (their version) by the auspicious day, Friday 13th

His wife phoned me and said I was being unfair, hassling him like this. I suggested he sell his Mercedes Benz and drive something more frugal

The ulterior motive for her phoning me was to ask for more money

Glad you had some success.

I had the builder's electrician kicked off my site on Friday, told the builder I don't want to see him here again. Keen to see what happens tomorrow.

They refer to themselves as that. :D

So I used to pay these guy R700 each per day as a bonus, just to help them out.
But then they started stretching the work out.

And now I have a 35m wall to build, 2.1m high; and they are telling me that it is going to take at least a month to complete.

Another dude wants to charge me R950/sqm including the plastering.

Still doesn't sound right to me.

That sounds a bit on the excessive side to me, unless its a pretty beefy wall and includes foundations and all the materials and everything of that nature.

We have constant low water pressure in our area and this is normally not too big of an issue, except when the pressure dips then our washing machine doesn't work and shuts off.

Is there any way of building a buffer tank with a pump to tie this into the municipal water supply? I was thinking something along the lines of a pressurized tank with a booster pump that can run when the pressure is below a set value, or bypass the pump when the pressure supply is adequate?

it is in fact fairly common exactly what you described. inlet -> jojo - > booster tank

@signates. Speak to signates, has some setup that works with tank and pump.

I assume I would need to install a cut-off in the Jojo tank so that it doesn't overflow? Perhaps a water level cutoff linked to a valve to stop it from filling up altogether, and then I guess just a one-way valve to the booster tank from which the pump can draw.

Normal ball valve in Jojo.

Chatted to my builder now.

He pays the bricklayers between R450 and R500 a day.
For general labourer assistants he pays R220 a day.

He generally works off 750 bricks being laid a day per bricklayer and assistant team.

I'll take some pics after work if you want ? PM me a Nr then i'll whatsapp it. Or post here later tonight.
Would also appreciate it. All the water pipes in our area are going to be replaced over the next 8 months and don't want to be without it, and was about to start investigating the same solution wondering how complicated it would be. This discussion is very timeous
