what is coming down the wall? (i. to the breaker?) a plug circuit should be 2.5 though yes

Yes, 2.5mm2 for sockets.
Sounds like someone extended with the smaller cable?
 
The cable comes up from the ground, it looks like 4mm2. (its definitively bigger than 2.5m2)

My understanding is sockets should b 2.5mm2 for a 20A breaker. Waiting for a call back from the electrician.

The pain for me is its difficult to determine the actual cable size - I just know from working with 2.5m2 it feels a lot more rigid, and the copper looks quite a bit thicker. This looks like the stuff used for lights (in fact - its identical to the cable used on the light switch in the room)

It just amazes me the short cuts people take to save a probably R10 in this case, its only 3m of cabling. (I took a cutting of 1.5mm2 and 2.5mm2 - this cabling coming out looks like 1mm2)

I also really detest that they started plastering electrical cable directly into walls instead of conduits.

yip... twin earth cables are great, but really should still be in conduits for this very reason - even if not legally required.
 
Sheesh I was thinking of doing some renovations in the kitchen and bedrooms sometime this year but after reading this thread...my poephol voel soos n oorywerige oester!

Toilet in the spare bathroom started leaking from the bottom - I assume I need to rip it out and replace the wax seal ring underneath and redo the edge seal (caulking or something?)?

Naw no need to rip it out.

When you take the new ring, break 1 space open so its not a ring anymore. The part where you cut it open, make sure that is at the top.

After cleaning up the old stuff, push the new broken ring in. That wax ring is bendable.

Trust me, if you get a plumber to do it, thats what he will do without ripping anything out. Its a basic clean up task and insert new ring.

That said. That is what I thought I needed on my 1 toilet. Turns out, the bolts for the water container rusted through. Just needed to put new ones in.

more likely they didn't have the proper cables and were too ****ing lazy to go and get it

Ok cool - I am just not in the mood for any surprises especially when it comes to the kakhuis and potential leaks around a mans most sacred contemplating place! Assume I just close taps, plunge the water down the drain, remove bolts, lift toilet and replace wax ring (if that is the problem) and refit toilet? Must I use that caulk stuff or can I just use a silicon based sealant around the edge?

Jy haal nie die toilet uit nie. Die toilet bly op sy plek staan. Daai silikoon ringe is cheap.

Probably - what would be great though is being able to call back the company that issued the CoC years afterwards, and have them do the work for free.

I imagine when we sell this house we'll have a ton of stuff that needs "fixing" to comply with regulations
 
Hi guys,

Undertaking the process to paint my place. Anything I need to know?
Going to try do it myself, one room per weekend.

Some cracks in the living room so leaving those for last, any idea on the best way to handle those?

I think my brain has had enough with me for the day as in another thread I misunderstood how a step down transformer works and now I confused the toilet issue as well.

Will double check tonight when I get home but the problem is the following: the toilet is leaking at the base and not at the back where the sewer pipe connection is! I am 99% sure its not the wax ring at the back that is leaking as the water seems to be slowly seeping out of the base of the one side of the toilet which I find very strange...

like other poster said, dont need to take anything out to put in the ring. You do it in place. Water must be out, and you need a proper cleaning there before putting in the ring.

So its leaking at the bottom of the cistern (thing holding the water)? Mine had the same issue, then it is the screws yeah. Thats slightly more complex. You need to disconnect the water pipe which supplies water first before anything else (tap to toilet closed ofc). Then only you can unscrew the bolts holding the cistern in place. In my case I tried when I realized they rusted right through.

Haha eish I should just go have a nap and try reboot my system before I hurt myself. I will take a pic tonight and post later - as far as I could tell, from a quick look this morning and using some TP to gauge where the water is coming from, its the literal base of the toilet that is leaking and not the cistern or the sewer connection at the back nor the water pipe at the wall. Let me get back home to confirm before I further hurt myself though...
