Ok so I decided to give Dulux weatherguard a try to paint my outside, Leroys had a special R870 a 20l tin, so I got 3 for outside. It actually is pretty good, it spreads really well, it hides hairline cracks really well, it dries in a decent time and it looks good.
Sure the plaster could've been fixed up, but my guy was only asked to fix cracks, damp spots and paint. He did plaster in some places where he could, but when he ran out he just filled cracks and damped proof. He did attempt to replaster a spot where the previous owner just patched it really badly. Initially you could see the plaster through the paint but as it dried, you can just about make it out.

@Smokey mcpot and others

how would you fix this

its gets worse when it rains

the water seeps through the wall and this is the inside wall

Do you mean it's seeping in from the outside wall? As in penetrating damp?
First does it happen when the rain hits that wall constantly? Is there a drain or gutter nearby? That could be causing it.
You'll need to scrape both sides down to the plaster, allow both sides to dry and only waterproof the outside as far as I know as you need it to be breathable.

no gutter and its the rain that hits the wall

how much does waterproofing cost ?

You'd need to identify the cause before even starting, some things I'd check.
  • Have you got a garden you're watering against the wall (or your neighbour if it's a boundary wall)
  • Is that a parapet wall, if so it may actually be coming in from the top
  • Obvious things like a shower, basin, any plumbing in the wall
  • Gutters dumping water right at the wall

It's not that much, depending on the area, but you could try with dampseal first, which means you scrape all the old paint off the other side to get to the raw plaster, you paint the damp seal on the plaster, this should prevent the water moving through the wall.

But you would also need a good exterior paint with damp protector on the outside to not allow water to go through.

You're not going to get very far fixing it in this weather - you need it to dry out first.
If it's just rain then I'd get a wire brush and scrape off as much paint on inside and outside as possible, leave it to dry (assuming the weather allows). Then on the outside I'd dig away a bit at the soil to get closer to the foundation of the wall, paint it with a good couple of coats of wall seal, then paint your normal colour over that.

No point in waterproofing or doing anything special on the inside IMO. After you know the outside is sealed then prime and repaint the inside.

Yup don't do the inside as you need one side to be able to breath. Oh also get a decent outdoor crack filler and fill all the cracks on that outside wall, because if rain is hitting it, there are cracks.
I thought mine was bad, until I saw yours, I only did mine in a JHB winter as that is when it is dry. But during summer it was constant rain.

Either your memory is bad or my imagination is going wild... butbdidnt we discuss that the last time I was there?

I cant remember what exactly the issue was but I'm pretty sure I remember seeing exposed bricks lower down on the wall?
Also the wall has no weep holes or air vents. I think we discussed possibly adding breathing mechanisms to the wall?

yeah no we did discuss but this is more now from the rain

so there might be other issues as well other than the rain which i have to obviously inspect 1st
