The Home Improvements Thread (3)

When I bought the house this was in the garden. It's about 1.5m x 1.5m.

Now that I want to remove it I've discovered the cement/plaster has been reinforced with 2 strands of thick (3/4 cm) wire (?)

How would you guys suggest I demolish it and would I need to hire some sort of tool to cut the wire?

You don't own a grinder..?

Don't aim for the tiniest pieces.. Chop concrete off in a few select places to expose the rebar, that will allow for manageable large chunks, and use a normal grinder with a cut off disc to cut the rebar..

You likely would end up with about 8-10 larger chunks that can still be moved around easily enough..

Thanks Slayer, this is exactly the advice I was looking for because I had absolutely no idea how to approach it.

I don't own a grinder but I'm sure my BIL does, will ask him to come around to "help" ;)

A good excuse to go and buy one? Certain tools are just 'must-haves'. Grinder, drill, TIG welder, metal lather, 3D printer etc

My neighbor is taking huge chances building extra rooms.

Folks.. Here’s a curious tale regarding additional rooms being built at a guest house which borders the side of my property. I’d best not name the town in case the owner picks this up, except to say I’m in the Free State and approx 50km from Potch and 45km from Sasolburg.

In February this year I asked the guest house owner to cut down two small trees which are breaking open my wall. She said NO WAY..they are building extra rooms and these are needed for shade. Even though their position only provides a little shade just before sunset. Nothing was done.

Then a couple of weeks ago, builders suddenly arrived, dug foundations then the very next day poured the foundation, and the day after, started the brickwork.

I checked the distance from my boundary, its 1.3m, and I’ve not approved the deviation from 1.5m.

After that I started a conversation up with the owner, she tells me all is in order and the plans were approved in 1963..yes you read that correctly, its not a typo. She sees no problem with the plans and approval being sixty years old.

Now for the amusing part.

I’ve started asking her to cut down the tree’s damaging the wall , she tells me its a joint responsibility as its my wall. And should a bird sit on the wall and poop, and a tree grow against the wall from that poop, so I’m also responsible for removing the trees.. lol. I asked.. if a bird flies past and poops, and the poop just happens to land next to the wall, is this also my responsibility. And how can a person determine how the seed was planted. Obviously she’s got no answer there.

Next, I queried about storm water drainage from her plot to mine. I was told each drain is blocked on her side, and according to her municipal contact, I’m responsible for ensuring her side is clear. She sent me photos of the drains from her side. They’ve put paving or stones against the drainage panels. And blew a gasket when I asked to come round to dig up the paving and stones. It seems her hubby will be attending to this.

The last thing is something I can’t wait to see how its resolved. The back of these rooms is less than 1.5m from their neighbours boundary, and sewage pipes must run down the gap. SANS 10400 says they must be at least 1.5m from the foundations. Except there isn’t enough room.. As they say, **** happens.
Sounds like a fun neighbour to have indeed. If her tree damages the wall she is liable to cut it down and repair the wall.

I'd report these builds to the council ASAP. Also, since she's already shown herself to incomprehensible and unmotivated to form a constructive dialogue - I'd hand this matter to an attorney and block all direct communication. Lawyers should address each issue and force a resolve.

So we had the element replaced, but geyser stopped working again this week. I opened it up and one connector pole is definitely melted off. What would cause this?

And do have the element, thermostat or both replaced?

The corrosion there is not something I would imagine is a good sign and likely might be a symptom of whatever is wrong..

Looks like the thermostat was not seated nicely in the pin, causing an arc and heat.

I would test the thermostat with a multimeter, it should "turn on" at room temp, chances are with the plastic melted the contacts are now far enough away that it can no longer arc and present itself in a "working" condition.

Chances are both are in working order and it was fitted poorly, It would be recommended to replace that element to not cause any electrical issues with the terminal exposed i guess, personally id probably throw some heatshrink on it and refit, but I am in no means qualified to give you professional advise.

Thanks. Just an update - I tested the element and thermostat earlier this morning. Thermostat is dead, element is still good.

The sacrificial anode is also completely eroded. It took quite a bit of work to get it out - ended up needing to buy a new socket as I only had 30mm, not 28. Anyway, it's out now and I'll put the new one in this evening when I assemble it all again. I just have some other stuff to attend to this afternoon.

Hi All,

Any advice on removing self adhesive window film?

The previous home owner had it installed and its very dated/yellow. I tried removing some from a small window using a razor blade scraper and a hair dryer but the stuff is brittle and breaks easily while pealing off.

My next step is soaking it with soapy water to see if that helps break down the adhesive.

I would try a heat gun. Otherwise I am sure a hammer would solve your issue. Good luck

hair dryer, just heat it up a bit and start peeling it off. Any residue on the window can be cleaned off with turps or thinners afterwards

only saw this now, bolt cutters would cut that in 1 second...

after that if you can't dispose of it, just dig a small hole in the garden and bury it, easy peasy

Quick one for those with experience. Whats is the going rate/m² to build a single course brick wall?

So far, as expected in this industry, my house painting is going well.

Wednesday, contacted two companies, both personal recommendations
Company 1 - very keen, will come Thursday between 9am and 12pm - will give me 5 minutes heads-up. Ghosted.
Company 2 - only responded Thursday, because they're busy (no issue with that), they're also keen - would like to come Friday morning. Ghosted.

Boggles the mind doesn't it? All you hear is okes complaining about how bad it is out there and how they are struggling to find jobs like these. And then they fsck you over like that.

I had my house repainted etc. in 2022. It is documented in this thread. The guy even removed all the gutters to repaint the facia boards. Hmmm. I was lucky it lasted last season's rain and storms. Had a one mofo of a hail storm a week or 2 back and it turns out they never even fixed the gutters with brackets back to the facia boards at the most dangerous edges of the top roof. So it was just the downpipes holding it in place.

The contractor ghosted town after that, owing guys money and unfinished work, etc. and this week I tuned his father who does gutters to come sort out my issue. He was shocked and tuned me wtf is going on here. So I said to him this was his sons work. Mumbles a few words warra warra warra. Anyway, they fixed the issue.

I'm removing my gutters myself beforehand, going to replace them afterwards.
